Foundation Supports Many Aspects of Conservation

In August, MCHF approved a grant to support the statewide campaign to build awareness of the benefits of trees to Missourians. Missouri's 2010 Forest Action Plan listed 11 main issues concerninTrees Workg Missouri's forests. One of the issues highlighted is a lack of awareness by Missourians about how our trees and forest resources in the state benefit us. Quoted from the Forest Action Plan, "Perhaps the most important factor in ensuring the sustainability of Missouri's trees and forest resources ... is achieving awareness. If we want Missouri citizens to support forest resources, they need to understand and appreciate the importance of Missouri's trees and forests." The forestry campaign is being led by the Forestry Division within the Missouri Department of Conservation. MDC will partner with organizations interested in increasing Missourian's awareness of how our trees and forests benefit us. Wooden utensils (left) will be used to promote this campaign and will link back to the theme of the campaign: that Missouri forests provide benefits to us. Grant Helps Fund Incentives for Twin Lakes Walleye Project

The Twin Lakes Walleye Club (TLWC) is a group of walleye anglers who fish Bull Shoals and Norfork lakes in south central Missouri and north central Arkansas. This group has a strong interest in the walleye fisheries of these two lakes and has been very active in sharing biological and angling knowledge with its members. Fisheries management biologist A.J. Pratt recently submitted a grant to the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation on behalf of TLWC to help both the club and MDC learn more about the walleye resource. MCHF awarded a $650 grant to the Twin Lakes Walleye Club (TLWC). The money was used to purchase Bass Pro Gift Certificates as incentives to club members who participated in collecting walleye otoliths for age/growth analysis and

recording fishing trip information. Bass Pro Shop's MDC discount was added to the grant and provided a total of $707 in gift certificates. The group's leadership provided a monthly (January-October), randomly drawn, $50 gift certificate to members who turned in fishing diary sheets.  Also, a $103.50 gift certificate was awarded at each June and October meeting to members who turned in walleye heads.  At the October meeting, TLWC members thanked the MCHF and MDC for their support of this cooperative project.  To collect another year's worth of data, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has donated $650 to TLWC for incentives in 2013.  This is another example of stretching MCHF and MDC funds by recruiting additional funding partners.  Since one of the lakes is in Arkansas, it makes sense to have bi-state funding to continue the study.

The Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization founded in 1997 to help meet financial needs placed on natural resource conservation and conservation-related outdoor recreation.

The Foundation is separate from the Missouri Department of Conservation but supports that agency's mission of protecting the state's fish, forestry, and wildlife resources for all Missourians. We are governed by a volunteer board comprised of conservation, community, and business leaders. By working with Missouri Department of Conservation staff, who partner with conservation groups statewide, we fund projects that immediately address conservation and outdoor recreation needs. Since it was created in 1997, the Foundation has provided more than $11 million for conservation projects. The Foundation receives funding from several sources, including Conservation Heritage License Plate donations; private donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations; and payments to the Stream Stewardship Trust Fund.

The Foundation offers volunteer opportunities and a variety of conservation giving opportunities. If you would like to speak to a Foundation staff person for more information, call 1-800-227-1488.
