We're All In
This Together
I ran across an uplifting story this weekend about a homeless man who found an expensive diamond ring and was honorable enough to return it to the young lady who'd lost it; living proof that virtue and integrity can show up in the most humble of situations.
This reminded me of an incident that a friend related to me during the MANTS Show in Baltimore, about receiving an unexpected kindness from a stranger. When my friend expressed his appreciation and astonishment ,
the stranger simply replied,
"We're all in this together."
These words have echoed in my mind and in my heart since I heard this several weeks ago. There are situations virtually every day where I have opportunities to put this attitude into practice. Sometimes I'm a Saint and sometimes
I'm a Sinner.
I will keep this simple and close with a poem that I read years ago, that addresses this issue from the other side.
The Cold Within
by
James Patrick Kinney
Six humans trapped by happenstance
In bleak and bitter cold Each one possessed a stick of wood
Or so the story's told.
Their dying fire in need of logs
The first man held his back
For of the faces round the fire
He noticed one was black.
The next man looking 'cross the way
Saw one not of his church
And couldn't bring himself to give
The fire his stick of birch.
The third one sat in tattered clothes.
He gave his coat a hitch.
Why should his log be put to use
To warm the idle rich?
The rich man just sat back and thought Of the wealth he had in store And how to keep what he had earned From the lazy shiftless poor.
The black man's face bespoke revenge
As the fire passed from his sight.
For all he saw in his stick of wood
Was a chance to spite the white.
The last man of this forlorn group Did nought except for gain. Giving only to those who gave
Was how he played the game.
Their logs held tight in death's still hands
Was proof of human sin.
They didn't die from cold without
They died from cold within.

Pup of the Week

A Happy Tail To Remember!
This photo is a true testament to the work Bill Foundation has been doing for the past 13 years and it makes me so proud to be a part of it!
In this picture, there are three generations of Bill Foundation dogs, all adopted by Janet and her family :-)
On the right is Coco, who Jo (our founder) rescued eight years ago. Coco was a young pup back then and she was quickly adopted by Janet.
On the left is Pippi, who's mom was rescued by Bill Foundation about 18 months ago. Mom was very pregnant at the time of her rescue and had serious complications when she delivered her pups. With surgery and A LOT of medical care, we were able to save the mama, Pippi and her littermates! When Pippi was old enough, she joined Janet's family.
In the middle is Violet Bohdi and we all know the story of her rescue through the video "15 dogs in 15 minutes" (If Violet received a warm welcome from Coco and Pippi and has officially joined Janet's family! Congrats Violet!
It's magical knowing that we have adopters who come back to us to add to their family 2, 3 and even 4 times over the course of a decade. I believe it's a sign that what we do matters and that we have made an impact, even if it's in just a small way.
Thank you to Janet and her family for allowing Bill Foundation to be a part of your family. We are honored and grateful for your support and your loving home.
xoxo Annie
