Crash Course For
Valentine's Day
Following is a Moldy Oldy from our Newsletter Archives.
Enjoy!
With Valentine's Day on the immediate radar, we'd like to share some random views on that most elusive &
mysterious of all emotions: LOVE.
Some extremely serious; others not so much. We hope that something here will bring a smile to your face or touch a soft spot in your heart. And if either happens, we hope that you will pass it on to Someone Special.

Thought For The Day
Come all you fair and tender ladies
Be careful how you court young men.
They're like a star in a summer's morning,
First appear and then they're gone.
If I'd a-knowed afore I courted
That love, it was such a killin' crime,
I'd a-locked up my heart in a box of golden
and tied it up with a silver line.

Fair and Tender Ladies

Drunk With Love
This is what Ellen Gilchrist, a fine southern writer, says about love in her journal, Falling Through Space:
"People are endlessly fascinated by love. They talk about it and laugh about it and desire it and hate it. Whenever one of us falls in love, our friends watch it as they would the progress of a disease. ... So I have written a book of stories, Drunk With Love, in which I set out to explore what I know about the subject. I have failed. ... I thought I was going to penetrate that mystery through my characters. Wrong. All I did was wade deeper into the mystery...."
"What are you going to do now?" my editor asked, when we had finished our work. "I think I'll go fall in love," I answered. "Why don't you just go home and stick your finger in an electric socket instead," he suggested, "it would save you the trouble of getting dressed up." |

The Most Beautiful Love Letter Ever Written
We could all take a lesson
in true love and devotion
from Sullivan Ballou,
a Union Officer from Rhode Island,
who wrote the following letter
to his wife Sarah,
one week before he was killed
in the first Battle of Bull Run.
July 14, 1861 Camp Clark, Washington
My very dear Sarah: The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days-perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more . . .
I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing-perfectly willing-to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt . . .
Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.
The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them for so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me-perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my little Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness .
But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again . . .

Pup of the Week
This might just be my favorite photo of Tessa to date!
And it's not just because she looks so adorable... While giving her a bath tonight, Tessa became quite adventurous in the tub and walked with total confidence and comfort :-) When she decided she was ready to get out of the tub, she attempted to CLIMB OUT! What a dramatic and monumental moment considering she couldn't stand up on her own a few weeks ago! She also seemed quite please with herself and I cheered her on for her courage (of course while keeping her safe and insuring she didn't fall). WAY TO GO TESSA!
(Tessa is blind and had Hydrocephalus. When we rescued her, she was unable to walk on her own or navigate through any aspects of a normal life. Through a variety of medical and holistic treatments, and rehabilitation, she has begun to make significant progress. Her longterm prognosis is still unclear, but she is now happy and enjoying her life :-)
