Greetings!
We are rounding third base and heading for home as another year comes to a close, and we collectively sigh, "Where did the year go?" Though, perhaps some of us are ready to close the books on 2014 with it's slow start and dismal economic projections. In any event, here we are, at the outset of fourth quarter with the holidays just around the corner.
In this issue we will share with you an article about a printer who has leveraged value added printing as his unique selling proposition and is reaping the rewards! Additionally, we have highlighted a few coatings that have been the latest craze -- thermo, hydro and photochromic! See the article to get your questions answered about these popular color-changing coatings.
Be sure to check out the GLGA event that is coming up mid-October. H&H will be participating in the panel discussion about value-added finishing. We hope to see you there.
Enjoy this issue and, as always, please let us know how we can best serve you!
Best wishes,
Michelle Leissner & the H&H Graphics Team

the way you look at printing?
In addition to working with our clients to engage multiple senses, by regularly printing coatings such as scents, textures, gloss and glitters, we are specialists in printing materials that change color when stimulated by temperature, light, water and pressure.
We have summarized the hottest color changing technologies below for your reference.
THERMOCHROMIC coatings change color in response to temperature fluctuations. There are two primary types of Thermochromic coatings, liquid crystals and leuco dyes. The most famous application ever, the "mood" ring of the 1970's, was a liquid crystal. Thermochromic coatings are ideal for use on advertising, consumer packaging, product labels, security printing, and novelty applications such as temperature sensitive plastics and mugs, promotional items, toys and textiles.

PHOTOCHROMIC coatings change from clear when indoors to color when outdoors. Specifically, they change color in response to ultraviolet (UV) light, usually from the sun or a black light.
Photochromic behavior can be either reversible or irreversible.
Reversible Photochromics transform from clear to color by changing their chemical structure after absorbing UV light. The UV light causes the photochromic ink to absorb color (like a dye), and then change back to clear when the UV source is removed. They can cycle thousands of times depending upon the application. They can also change from one color to a different color by combination with a permanent pigment.
HYDROCHROMIC coatings change repeatedly from white to transparent when wet with water and changes back to the original white when dry.
While increasingly popular, these coatings are complex to work with and require highly specialized manufacturing and production techniques. H&H has depth of experience with these complex applications and works closely with an industry leading partner to source raw materials and best serve our clients.

Can you afford value-added finishing?
Value Addition - the new norm
A compelling article in Print Week India reminds us not only can we afford value-added finishing, we can't afford NOT to use value-added finishing techniques in order to grow our businesses and remain innovative and competitive in the market place. India-based Shree Printwell Offset discussed the company's commitment to providing value-added screen printing to their customers, and that they believe value-added finishing will lead the company on a growth trajectory.
"We saw some striking value addition samples over offset printed commercial and packaging jobs. We now realize the complementary role of screen printing in offset printing."
They reported that today, 75% of their jobs (commercial and packaging) involve value addition. Their customers reportedly embrace the idea of UV special effects because want their jobs to stand out.
BY offering glitter, abrasive, crystal, reflective and other ornamental UV special effects to embellish commercial and packaging jobs they are maintaining a growth of 30-40% per year in their printing business.
"We believe that sustained growth is possible only with value addition. In the normal offset printing arena, there are too many players with cut throat competition. This is a great benefit to us and to our customers. We can now undertake complicated jobs requiring application of various UV special effects over offset printed commercial and packaging jobs."
With a solid understanding of the value of screen printed special effects and an industry-leading screen printing partner, like H&H Graphics, you can extend a wider array of services to your customers and can leverage value added printing as your company's USP.

Because we constantly find ourselves thinking how we can improve, enhance or bring to life great design, we selected the below ad for our EVEN BETTER IF segment.
The Bath & Body Works ad below is enticing - bright colors and beautiful photography, yet we think, would be EVEN BETTER IF... it appealed to multiple senses, not just the eyes.
What if we could smell candles?! Bath & Body Works is, after all, selling SCENTED products -- hand lotions, soaps and candles. Their scents are an integral part of their brand -- which is why we can all identify their fresh, clean scents as we pass one of their retail locations. Their scents draws us in.
For just a few additional pennies investment, this could have been a home- run marketing piece. The result would have been increased ROI and customer engagement with their sweetly scented brand - leading customers to take action.
We would love the opportunity to share ideas with you for your next project.
Please send us a photo of something that you want our help with or that you think would be ideal for us to include in our "Even Better If" segment, please do so at information@handhgraphics.com
