Issue 56

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Collect for Labor Day, BCP pg. 261

Transitions:

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

A time for transitions, I would add, especially during the months following Triennial when a newly elected Council transitions into new tasks and responsibilities.  Three years ago when the previous Council was transitioning, Pam Runyon asked who among us could be the editor of Cross+Links.  I felt a tap on my shoulder and a voice in my ear saying, "You can do this."  So for the last three years, and with the invaluable assistance of Lynn Kimbrell at the National Office, I have been your editor.  A couple of months ago, Lynn and I were reviewing past issues of Cross+Links while conducting research for a recent article.  The changes crafted to this electronic newsletter in response to listening to the Holy Spirit were amazing and eye-opening.  However, it's a new Triennium and time to call a new editor for Cross+Links.  Pam Sebura has answered that call and is the new Cross+Links editor.  She will continue working with Lynn Kimbrell.  It is our shared vision that Cross+Links will be a valuable tool we use to share with one another how God is at work in our lives.

I answered a different tap on my shoulder and am now the National President of our Order.  Pam has asked Council members to write short articles introducing themselves.  My biography (in fact, the biographies of all the Council members) can be found on our website. Click here, to review the biographies.  (Note: You must be signed-in to view the biographies.) Rather than reword this document, I would like to highlight my answer to the question:  What is your vision for the Order?  The definition of "Order" includes the word community.  We are a community of women who have taken vows to pray, serve, and evangelize.  These vows provide structure to our spiritual journey to know and love our Lord.  The community of our Order provides a sisterhood of women who support each other on their journeys, a sisterhood who are Christ to one another.  "Community" shares its root with "common," and my vision is for Daughters to celebrate the common threads of our stories.  As we share our stories of God at work in our lives, as we become part of each other's stories, God weaves us into the tapestry that becomes His gift to us, the Order of the Daughters of the KingŪ.

I look forward to sharing with one another our stories of God present in our lives, our visions for the Order, our prayers and service.  I anticipate with joy the amazing works God has planned for us.  I look forward to reviewing the tapestry-in-progress that is our Order when it is time again for transitions in August 2018.

Pam Sebura, Cross+Links Editor

Wow! We have experienced another wonderful Triennial Celebration. As your new Cross+Links editor, I wanted to use the first few issues to introduce the members of the National Council and Provincial presidents, their assigned responsibilities and a bit about who they are. So, first as the new editor, I am Pamela Sebura. I have been a Daughter since 2000. I remember going to the 2003 Triennial in Minneapolis as a delegate, and being overwhelmed by it all. I remember thinking "I wonder what it would be like to be on National Council." I never envisioned that nine years later I would serve as Province V President and begin my journey on Council.

I have served as Volunteer Hostess Coordinator for the Indianapolis and Salt Lake City Triennials. I will continue to work with the Triennial Committee in charge of food, banquet, and hospitality. I am also the Event Coordinator responsible for planning the Council meetings held each fall and will oversee the Endowment Fund.

Let me know if there are specific topics you would like to have covered in Cross+Links. I will be continuing some of the same topics that Susan O'Brien included during her tenure as Cross+Links editor and will be looking for some new ideas and topics.

For my life, I am Chair of the Education Department for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, teaching in the fields of early childhood, elementary education, and early childhood special education. I have four children and six grandchildren, two dogs, a cat, and a husband of 45 years. In my spare time, I enjoy quilting and spinning my own wool to weave.

Revised Dues Collection Process

New Invoices
In the past, a "Dues Packet" was sent to every senior and Junior Daughters chapter.  The packets were a way that Chapter Presidents and Junior Directresses could collect annual dues from their members and mail them to the National Office. These packets were very time-consuming to put together and costly to mail.  With the implementation of our new membership software, the "Dues Packets" process was replaced with "Individual Dues Invoices."

In early July the Fiscal Year 2015 invoices were created and emailed to every senior Daughter with a valid email address in their record. This month we are mailing printed "Statements of Invoices" to members for whom we do not have a valid email address. Junior Daughters will still continue to pay their dues through their Directresses, who will receive a Junior Chapter List in the coming weeks.

Payment Methods
The primary way for members to pay their annual dues is to pay online.  Once a member receives the invoice, she should sign into the member portal on our new website and pay online.  Members will be given an opportunity to update their personal contact information while making their payment.  This is the most efficient and cost effective way for the Order to receive and process payments.

Members may still pay their dues by mail by completing an Individual Dues Payment Form (found on the website under Resources) and sending it to the National Office along with a check or credit card payment information.

Chapter presidents/treasurers are no longer required to collect individual dues or to send a single dues payment for their chapter to the National Office.

Questions
When we first switched from individual Daughters paying their own dues to chapter presidents/treasurers collecting them, there were glitches. We worked through. Any change is difficult, and we realize this new system has not come without a few glitches.  We are very much aware of the problems that have occurred and are working hard to resolve these problems in collaboration with the new membership software company.

Please bear with us as we strive to make our dues collection process easy for you and as streamlined as possible for our National Office staff. While chapter presidents no longer directly collect the Order's dues, they do have knowledge of this new dues payment process. If you have any questions regarding this new process, please contact your chapter president for her assistance. If the two of you still have questions, the staff will be happy to assist you; please contact them at 770-517-8552 or dok1885@doknational.org.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

God's plan for me these next three years was definitely not my plan! I am honored to have been elected to the National Council, and even more honored to be elected First Vice President of the Order by my sisters on the new Council. None of this would have happened if God had not had a plan for my life, and equipped me through many varied and rich experiences. Once I was able to put all my faith and trust in Him I have tried to be obedient to His call.

My role as First Vice President is to support our President in all areas of the Order, and help guide initiatives that we undertake, making sure that they enhance the work of the Order. As the new Chair of the International Committee, the area in which I will be working most is with International Daughters. Another National Council member, Marilyn Vinson McAfee, is also a member of the Committee. I am blessed to say that our three immediate past International Chairs (Emily Thrasher, Lana Valenta, and Pam Runyon) are all very willing to be on the Committee and enthusiastically help with the growing interest in Daughters around the world.

During our wonderfully successful Triennial celebration, the comments from attendees were that it was a great blessing to be able to meet and get to know our International Daughters. We were able to bring representatives of 16 of the 21 countries with chapters to Utah, and we will begin the planning soon for our next Triennial celebration with International Daughters.

We have received requests to help start Daughters in the Middle East and East Africa, and have been asked to take information to Korea. The Holy Spirit is moving throughout the world to lead women and children to a lasting relationship with Jesus Christ, and it is a great blessing to me to be able to play a small part in fulfilling His plan for us. I look forward to letting you know you during the next three years of the opportunities He is opening for the Order throughout the world.

Lindy Kirk
First Vice President
Chesley Vohden, Second Vice President

For the last two trienniums, I have been privileged to serve as your National Daughter at Large Chair. This triennium, I am honored to serve as your Second Vice President, Triennial Chair and Self Denial Fund Chair.

After just coming off a wonderful Triennial in Utah, it's quite intimidating to imagine how on earth we can top Triennial 2015! We're going to try, though, to at least match the awe and wonder! Triennial 2018 will be in Texas where everything is BIG so our Triennial will be BIG! Our theme will be centered around Evangelism so get ready! Patsy Thomson, Pam Sebura and the Executive Board are already making plans. We'll keep you posted on dates, times and places as we have them confirmed. Just mark your calendars now for summer 2018 Triennial in Texas!

Finally, I am blessed to serve as your Self Denial Fund Chair. I, and my two daughters, have been recipients of Self Denial Funds grant for individual mission trips, and for that, I thank you. I am pleased to be able to give back by reviewing Self Denial Fund grant requests, praying over the requests and granting funds to others to go out in the mission field and spread the love of Jesus, evangelism! What a joy to serve in this capacity! I am grateful to all the Daughters of the King who give so generously to the Self Denial Fund. Please don't stop! I praise God for the generosity of Daughters and the willingness to help others spread the Gospel here in the United States and abroad. I am looking forward to a dynamic, life-changing, Spirit-filled triennium! I hope you are too!

Chesley Vohden
Second Vice President
Susan Keith, National Secretary

This is my second term on National Council, so I am already fairly well known at least on the east coast and Texas, where I have visited a couple of times.  This time I am the Secretary and am also serving as the Bylaws Committee Co-Chair.  You will hear a lot more from me in the capacity of the Bylaws Committee than you will as Secretary, at least until we meet again in Austin.

The Bylaws are an important part of who we are.  They specify the structure and organization of The Order, and they tell us how to conduct our business.  The last article of our Bylaws  tells us how to go about revising our Bylaws.  Why do we revise them? Let me answer that by asking another question.  Do you want to continue to drive your vehicle governed by the motor vehicle laws of 1930?  I don't and I don't think you do.  Our needs and the way we conduct ourselves are ever evolving and our Bylaws need to evolve with them.  Who can revise them?  Anyone is welcome to submit a suggestion or a query to the Bylaws Committee for discussion and possible inclusion.  In actuality, anyone can submit a resolution to revise the Bylaws, provided it has been submitted to all the chapters at least three months before Triennial and has been put on the Agenda for Triennial by the Secretary.  I see my job as not just reviewing the Bylaws for potential revisions but also in helping the membership understand the Bylaws.  I am looking forward to meeting many of you at your Provincial Assemblies where I hope to get your input about potential revisions to our Bylaws.

Susan Keith
National Secretary
 Patsy Thomson, Spiritual Formation Chair

I am delighted to be returning to Council and even more delighted to continue in service as the Master's Fund Chair and the Spiritual Formation Chair. A Daughter since 1996, I attend Trinity Episcopal Church in Baytown, Texas, where, among other things, I serve as the Junior Daughters Directress of the chapter I helped found in 2000. I have been a Glory Bound Singer since 2001 and an active Cursillista since 1983. Once a widow, I have been married for 23 years to Rogers Thomson, a Hospice Chaplain, and have raised seven adopted children and one granddaughter, while owning a small private school and child care center where I teach the two- to five-year old children. With God's help, I have battled leukemia, heart disease and Hurricanes Alicia and Ike, and even managed to cross the finish line of the Houston Half Marathon in 2007, but at 68 I do hope He does not need for me to do that again! My goals for both Chair positions this Triennium are to seek God's plan for better fulfilling the mission of the Order through the grant process and through helping all who seek to fulfill their individual goals in spiritual formation.

Recap of Business Meeting at Triennial 2015

Amid the beautiful mountains of Heber Valley, the venue for Triennial 2015, Daughters conducted the business of the Order in two separate sessions.  The 263 delegates to Triennial (among the 532 registered attendees) heard reports, elected a new National Council, and discussed and voted on recommended changes to the Order's Bylaws.  Delegates were also asked to vote on a resolution.  This report highlights some of the actions taken during the Triennial 2015 Business Meeting.

During the first session of business Saturday morning, Annemarie Delgado, National Treasurer, presented her report with Lindy Kirk, Finance Chair, reporting on the Order's investments.  (Audits by fiscal year are available on the Order's webpage for more information).  Phyllis Easley, Nominations Chair, introduced 15 nominees; each nominee answered the following question:  How can the Order vibrantly live into its mission in a 21st-century world, and how will you use your gifts to make this happen?  Four nominations were made from the floor, and each of these four nominees also answered the above question.  Election of National Council was conducted during the second business session.  See the Order's website for the names and contact information of Council 2015-2018 members.

During the second business session, Jen Mariano, First Vice President and Bylaws Committee member, moved the proposed changes to Bylaws to the floor for action by delegates.  The first Bylaw to be addressed was the proposed amendment to Article VII. Section B.  This amendment proposed a method by which Daughters at Large would be represented at the Triennial convention, the governing body of the Order.  Each province would select a Daughter at Large as its delegate to represent Daughters at Large at the Triennial Convention.  This amendment passed.  Province Boards will need to revise their bylaws (with guidance from National Council) to detail how these Daughter at Large delegates will be chosen.  The second Bylaw to be addressed was the proposed amendment to Article VI, Section 2, D. 5 calling for an annual audit by a Certified Public Accountant of all financial records to coincide with the end of the fiscal year.  This amendment also passed.  This amendment requires no action be taken other than by officers of the Executive Board and the National Office staff.  The final proposed change to the Bylaws to be addressed was the proposed amendment to Article III, Section 6, Paragraph H. regarding Dues Relief.  The amendment included in its language the consequences of approval of an application for Dues Relief.  A friendly amendment to this proposed amendment, putting the language in positive wording but not changing the impact of the amendment, was offered and accepted.  After much discussion, the delegates voted not to approve this amendment.  Therefore, dues relief for Daughters age 85 and older remains in effect as written and approved in the 2012 Bylaws. The Bylaws as of 2015 are currently available on the Order's website.

Jen Mariano also presented a resolution for action to be taken by the delegates:  (Be it resolved) that the names of those persons honored by a donation to one of the other three Funds of the Order would also be recorded in the Book of Remembrance, Honor, and Thanksgiving.  This resolution passed.  Previously, the only time the name of a person honored by a donation would be entered into the Book of Remembrance would be if the donation was to the Endowment Fund.  Now, if a donation is made in someone's name to the Endowment Fund, Self Denial Fund, Master's Fund, or Alpha Fund, his or her name will be entered into the Book of Remembrance, Honor, and Thanksgiving.  (These names are also published in The Royal Cross once a year.)

Before presenting the proposed Bylaws amendments for action by the delegates, Jen Mariano reminded them to be positive, polite and respectful.  All the business sessions were conducted with those attitudes in mind and the work of the Order was completed without a jarring note to disturb the spiritual mood of Triennial 2015.

Reflection on Labor Day

Labor Day: What does that mean?

The first Monday of September OR the day a woman gives birth to a child?

Is it the day of the year everyone labors the hardest (as some isolated children living on a farm a long way from town were taught) OR the day set aside by President  Grover Cleveland in 1894 as a federal holiday?

The day that is a once-a-year man-made American Sabbath day OR the day that honors the hard work done by people all year long?

The day that officially ends "summer" with fellowship with family and friends who take a break from their everyday labors OR the day where your work as a policeman, fireman or ambulance worker, as on-duty military personnel, nurse, or doctor, as a sales clerk, waitress, or gas station attendant continues?

The Bible has this to say:

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work..."
Exodus 20:8-10

"....Moreover, that every man who eats and drinks sees good in all his labor--it is the gift of God."
Ecclesiastes 3:13

"Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men."

Colossians 3:23

Being a Christian is hard work and we are all workers together. As Daughters of the King, as members of the Army of Christ, we have no days off and yet we must find a way to "keep a Sabbath Day" in order to be able to continue to be effective in the work He has given us to do.

Whether we approach Labor Day 2015 as a holiday from work, a continuation of work, the end of nine months of pregnancy, or the day we work the hardest, let us remember we are all "in labor" every day to produce beautiful children of God, beginning with ourselves, and, that no matter our job or vocation, God wants to use our work to not only bless others, but to grow each of us closer to Him.

At noon this Labor Day, September 7, 2015, let us join one another in spirit and pray these prayers from The Book of Common Prayer: The Collect for Labor Day found above and the following prayer:

Prayer For the Unemployed (BCP pg. 824)
Heavenly Father, we remember before you those who suffer want and anxiety from lack of work. Guide the people of this land so to use our public and private wealth that all may find suitable and fulfilling employment, and receive just payment for their labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
