November 2014
Issue 47

Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit  you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth:
Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage
we may always be supported by this fellowship
of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ,
in whom all our intercessions are acceptable
 through the Spirit,
and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

National Council News

The Reverend Dr. Deborah Jackson installing Lana Valenta, newly appointed member
of National Council.

Emily Thrasher, International Chair, has resigned from the National Council due to serious illness and death within her family.  It was with deep regret that I accepted her resignation at the end of October.  Emily has served as International Chair since 2012, and she will be greatly missed by the National Council and by our international sisters, whom she has shepherded with wisdom and love. She has done an amazing job and has dedicated countless hours to coordinating our international programs during this time of explosive growth. I ask your prayers for our dear Emily and her family during this difficult time.

Along with the sad news of Emily's resignation came the blessing of God's provision, as Lana Valenta answered the call to serve as International Chair for the remainder of this Triennium. The Executive Board knew that it would not be easy for anyone to transition into Emily's position mid-stream, but it became clear that Lana was uniquely qualified to tackle this challenge. Lana served on Council from 2009-2012 as Triennial Chair and Endowment Chair, and for the past two years, she has assisted Emily as an off-Council member on the International Committee.  She is passionate about the international expansion of our Order and has made numerous trips abroad, traveling to Honduras annually and meeting with Daughters in Ghana and Uganda during the past two years.  She also participated in the Strategic Planning/ International meeting this spring.  We are blessed that Lana will be able to continue the good work that Emily has begun.

Lana and the Reverend. Dr. Deborah Jackson were both able to attend the National Council meeting in Utah this past week. On November 6, I installed Mother Deborah as National Junior Daughters Chaplain, and then Mother Deborah installed Lana as a member of the National Council.  Please support both of these wonderful women with your prayers as they serve God in these vital positions within our Order.

Introducing Lana Valenta -- In Her Own Words

Go therefore and make disciples in all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age!   Matt 28:18-20

It is with mixed emotions that I accept the appointment to National Council to fulfill the term of International Chair.   Emily Thrasher has served in this position on the National Council for the past 2½ years with joy, with grace, with passion and with devotion to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ through the Order to women around the world!  She was the right one for this ministry with her personal international experiences and with her deep spiritual life.

Unexpectedly, medical events in Emily's family required that she shift her gifts from Daughters of the King to caring for her family.  You will be missed by so many, Emily.  During her term I served as the International Cross Chair, becoming familiar with the existing international chapters AND all the new chapters that are springing up around the world!

The mixed emotions that I mentioned are sadness for the loss to the International Sisterhood of Emily's ministry and love for them and for the joy I feel for being called by the National Council to fulfill her term.  The Great Commission touched me when I was a child, and I felt God calling me to missionary service internationally - crazy, I know!  As a child, this terrified me!  But it was always in my heart.   And NOW, by God's grace, I will work faithfully to fulfill Emily's plan for the International Sisterhood with daily connections to our sisters abroad and in bringing the country representatives to the Triennial 2015 in Midway, Utah!!

Please pray for God's plan to "teach them (our International Sisters) to observe all that I commanded you" through the ministry of Daughters of the King "in all the nations"!

International Chair

It's November -- Show the Endowment Fund Some Love

At Province V assemblies, Daughters are invited to contribute to each of the Order's funds:  Endowment, Master's, Self -Denial and Alpha.  Daughters who make donations receive stickers for their name tags - a different colored sticker for each fund, allowing them bragging rights. At the Bishop's Chapter in Springfield, Massachusetts, a piggy bank makes an appearance at chapter meetings as fund in-gatherings approach.  The pig sports a different color sticker on his snout for each fund.  Annunciation Chapter in Washington, D.C. allocates a portion of chapter dues for the Order's funds as a threshold gift.

Through these and other creative means, the Order keeps its funds healthy and growing, nurturing each in its turn.  This being November, it's time to show some love to the Endowment Fund.  The Endowment Fund, instituted in 1928, provides a foundation for our future, and thereby strengthens our ability to extend Christ's Kingdom.  A solid endowment fund is a measure of an organization's faith in itself and an expression of trust in its future leaders. So break out the piggy bank and give until he squeals.  Or as our motto bids us, give what you can.

The Endowment Fund last year received gifts amounting to $39,829.  In addition, the Order received $16,100 in lifetime dues, which also are deposited to the Endowment Fund.  Thank you for your generosity during the past year, and please continue to give.  While gifts are welcome throughout the year, All Saints' Day, November 1, has been set aside for the Fund's in-gathering.  It's a time when we remember and honor the saints in our lives, those still with us and those in the cloud of witnesses who went before.  November accordingly is a natural time to enrich the Endowment Fund with a gift in honor or in memorial of one of the saints in your heart.  When making a gift, remember to include the name of the honoree and the occasion for the gift (birthday, anniversary, etc.), for recording in The Order's Book of Remembrance, Honor, and Thanksgiving.

Be assured that the Endowment Fund is well-managed.  The bulk of the fund, about $1.4 million, principal and interest, is prudently invested in an account managed by Goodman Financial.  The fund saw gains of 6.3 percent during the 12 months ending on September 30, 2014.  The Order uses only income from the fund while the principal remains untouched.

The fund reached its present status through 96 years of Daughters stepping out in faith.  We stand on their foundation.  Let's keep building.

Spirited Walking Meditation

Our theme this month is Witnessing.

"I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day, I'd rather one would walk with me than merely show the way." This familiar poem by Edgar Guest reminds us that we witness to what is important to us by the way we live our lives. This month, reflect on what your life tells others about your values.

Be affectionate in your love for the brotherhood, eager to show one another honor, not wanting in devotion, but on fire with the Spirit. Serve the Lord. Romans 12:10-11

Click here to read the rest of this month's meditation and how we witness through our example and physical activity. Participate in the on-going discussion centered on these articles on the Spirited Walking page of the website.

Looking forward to Triennial. . . come, share the adventure with us!

The Executive Board (pictured above) met with your National Council earlier this month to conduct the business of the Order and to continue planning for Triennial 2015.  Adjectives that we used to describe this Council meeting may also be used to describe the adventure we hope Triennial 2015 will be:  Emotional, moving, spiritual, productive, substantial, beautiful, fun, both retrospective and prospective, and full of laughter, hugs and love (to paraphrase Jen Mariano).

Call now to reserve your hotel room and plan to register after January 1, 2015.  We look forward to experiencing our Triennial adventure together with you.

Important Information for Nominees!

Reminder:  January 15, 2015, is the deadline for submitting National Council Nominee forms.  Each Diocesan Assembly may nominate one Daughter to stand for election to the National Council at our Triennial meeting next June.

Change in Arrival/Departure Information for Nominees:

A change has been made to the Nominee form published in the Triennial edition of The Royal Cross.  Nominees who are not currently serving on National Council will not be required to arrive before the start of Triennial on Friday, June 19, 2015, but all nominees should plan to stay through noon on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. (Expenses for hotel and meals for this extra day will be covered by the Order.)

Note: The updated Nominee form is on the Triennial page of the national website.

YM Website

During the recent National Council Meeting at Zermatt Resort in Midway, Utah, Council members got a preview look at the new YM (Your Membership) web site, and the excitement is really building! During our four days of meetings we were able to see time and again how this new membership-based web site will be able to offer more information and possibilities for all Daughters than we ever imagined.

An incredible amount of work has gone into this new website, and while there is still more to be done before it  goes "live," we are confident the new site will be running before the end of the year.

In addition to handling individual dues payments and maintaining member profiles, Triennial registrations and delegate certifications will be done through the new web site, so you will be able to confirm that your registration has been received and you are confirmed as a delegate.  Orders for brochures and support materials, as well as crosses, DVDs and manuals, may also be placed through the web site and paid for with a credit card, and you will be able to verify the status of your order just by logging in to the web site (instead of wondering if the check got lost in the mail).

Please offer prayers of thanksgiving for the National Office Staff, especially Lynn Kimbrell and Mary Fletcher, the support team at YM, and the Implementation Team of Pam Runyon, Annemarie Delgado, Jennifer Mariano and myself, Christine Budzowski. We continue to work and meet via weekly conference calls, and look forward to announcing that the new web site is "live." Keep reading Cross + Links and you will be among the first to know!

Membership Has Its Privileges

"Membership has its privileges" -- many of you will remember this once popular ad slogan.  Membership also carries responsibilities... as members of The Order of the Daughters of the King, we have responsibilities to one another as sisters in community.

Our relationship as sisters in community really begins at the Service of Preparation when a candidate commits to begin to "live like a Daughter of the King."  Our By-Laws state a woman is "eligible for membership after a three-month period of concentrated study, training, prayer, and study."

This period of study is ideally a time for all chapter members to get to know and develop a bond with candidates.  I think it is a disservice to a candidate when one Daughter completes the Study Guide with her on a one to one basis and she never has an opportunity to engage in any way as a prospective Daughter with other chapter or diocesan Daughters.  The result is she takes a vow and joins a community of "sisters" who are strangers to her.  My entire chapter completes the study with the candidates with a different Daughter leading each weekly lesson.  The candidates attend assemblies, meetings and participate in all chapter activities.

The study period is not a time to race through the guide as if it is simply a handbook where rules and bylaws are learned.  It is a time when a woman examines her life, her beliefs, gains an understanding of who and what Daughters are and do, and determines whether she is able to commit to and is called to undertake the Rule of Life we observe.  Only then, at the end of the twelve-week study,  should she  make the decision to take the vow to become a Daughter of the King; like marriage, the Order is not to be entered into "unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately."

Membership does have its privileges.  It is a privilege and a joy for me to be in community with every Daughter I meet.  It is a privilege to meet and worship and fellowship with my sisters who become dear to me and whom I come to love.  I wish the same for each of you as you seek to build a Godly community in Christ's name and For His Sake wherever you may be.  Our responsibility as Daughters (members) is to be diligent and prayerful as we seek to daily to spread His kingdom in our earthly lives.

Evangelism Resources

The National Council is in the process of implementing new membership software for

The Order.  Many things will be familiar but you will also be able to see and do new things - the Service and Evangelism pages will be updated.

Here is a preview of several of the Service ideas and Evangelism resources that will be shown:

Evangelism Videos:

Dr. Robert E. Coleman is widely known for his ministry as a disciple maker and evangelist, and for many years has given leadership to the Billy Graham Center Institute of Evangelism at Wheaton College, along with the International Schools of Evangelism.

  • The Master Plan of Evangelism by Dr. Robert E. Coleman, Fleming H. Revell,1963,1964,1993.
  • "Multiply those kinds of people (who will shepherd others), and you will win the world."
Dr. Robert Coleman outlines the pattern and principles that Jesus used to disciple the twelve and how we can apply them in our lives to fulfill the mission to "go and make disciples...".
To see all nine videos, visit:  http://www.cslewisinstitute.org/Maste....

A book to read as a chapter study:

Martie McMane grew up as an Episcopalian and felt the call to ordained ministry at a time when the Episcopal Church was not ordaining women.  She is the Senior Pastor at the First Congregational Church of Boulder, Colorado.  She was the retreat leader at the Colorado Diocesan Retreat this past May and led us through the 12 Agreements which she tells about in her book,  Living Grace: Spiritual Growth in the Everyday World, Martie McMane, Marlin Press, 2011.

Service Ideas:

Daughters have many ways in which they serve individually and are often over extended.  Do not let this deter you.  Participating in a chapter or diocesan group project can be a lot of fun and "builds community."  The following suggestions are short term but enable us to keep our hands busy as we talk and fill our hearts with the joy of serving others.  Through prayer perhaps new ideas will inspire you and your chapter.

  1. Organizations like World Vision or food banks often need help packing items or sorting food items.
  2. With the support of your rector and help from the Music Director, plan and participate in an All Saint's Day Celebration or Quiet Day.
  3. Collect children's books and related games, stuffed animals, coloring books and such for children in shelters.  At a chapter meeting sort them and package them.  Don't forget to check the web for games and activities can enhance the reading and learning experience of the children.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,

we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks

for all your goodness and loving-kindness

to us and to all whom you have made.

We bless you for our creation, preservation,

and all the blessings of this life;

but above all for your immeasurable love

in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;

for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,

that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,

not only with our lips, but in our lives,

by giving up our selves to your service,

and by walking before you

in holiness and righteousness all our days;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,

be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
