Issue 44

We are many parts. We are all one body.

And the gifts we have, we are given to share.

May the Spirit of Love, make us one in deed.

One, the love that we share.

One, our hope in despair.

One, the cross that we bear.

Spirited Walking Meditation

Our theme this month is Stress. Stress is a part of our life. A certain amount of stress keeps us on our toes. Only when we allow stress to accumulate does it become dis-stress. This month, reflect on how you cope with stress in your life. How does prayer work in this process?

Have no anxiety about anything, but make all your wants known to God in prayer and entreaty, and with thanksgiving.
Philippians 4:6

YM and Your Chapter

YM stands for "Your Membership," and is the name of the software company chosen to develop the new member-based website for the Order of the Daughters of the KingŪ. Last month we talked a little about what to expect from the new membership website. This month we want to highlight some of the ways this new membership website will make life easier for chapter presidents and other officers.

Since chapter members and DALs will be able to log in and keep individual profiles updated, including  payment of dues online if they wish, it will be easier for chapter leaders to get current contact information and status of chapter members by logging in to the web site and viewing their chapter report.

The new password-protected member area will also provide all the resources a chapter leader will need, grouped together in one place. She can download  the Chapter Presidents' Manual, order brochures and materials to promote DOK, and get answers to frequently asked questions from a custom area for chapter leaders only.

Stay tuned for information and watch for the new web site, coming in late Fall.

A Call to Prayer - for Protection, Provision, Perseverance. . . and for Peace

Urgent prayers are needed for our Triennial speaker, Canon Andrew White, and for Christians and other minorities in Iraq. Canon White is currently in the north of Iraq ministering with his charity, FRRME.  You may have seen him interviewed or read some of his accounts of the atrocities there.  On August 9, Canon White posted this message on FaceBook:

"The extent of the persecution here in Iraq cannot be described. The massacres, the crucifixions, the rapes. The most horrendous massacre of the innocents since the Holocaust. Yet amongst all of this we give thanks because ours is the Kingdom of Heaven. You are my friends so you are uniquely connected to this atrocity which is happening. Tomorrow at church we will not be wearing green for Pentecost, but we will be in Red for Martyrs.

The focus of our service will indeed be prayer. As usual we will turn to our three P's, Praying for Protection, Provision and Perseverance. Will you get your church to pray for these three things for us? If it is possible could you have a collection for us? We know that our Lord will be with you as he is with us."

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, issued this statement, "The horrific events in Iraq rightly call our attention and sorrow yet again," he said. "Christians and other religious minorities are being killed and face terrible suffering. . . It is extremely important that aid efforts are supported and that those who have been displaced are able to find safety."

As we unite in prayer for Canon White and the innocents in Iraq, please pray also for the Daughters of Jerusalem and Christ Church as they offer relief to those caught in the violence there.  Above all, pray for peace - in Israel and Gaza, in Iraq, throughout the Middle East, and in every dark and desperate place.

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Note:  Many are changing profile pictures to the letter "nun" (top of this article) which the fanatics in Mosul used to mark the Christians' homes, "Nazoreans" as the Qu'ran calls us. This symbol will be appearing on our Facebook page and Twitter as we pray in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Christ in Iraq and around the world.

New Spanish Translations Available

The 2012 DOK Handbook has been translated into Spanish! It is now available on the website under Resources (Spanish) and can be downloaded to your computer. Like the English Handbook, it has all the services for new Daughters, chapter institutions, and officer installations.   The new International Leader's Guide has also been translated and is in the Spanish section below the Spanish Leader's Guide (for US Daughters).

Dues Relief Requires Application

I
n 2012 the Order's membership approved a new bylaw allowing for a Daughter who is 85 years of age or older to apply for relief from paying National, Provincial, and Diocesan dues.  Upon approval at the National level, the Daughter is granted Dues Relief status. This status is not automatic! The Daughter must submit an application found here through her chapter and the application must be approved at the National level.

Please keep in mind that with Dues Relief status a Daughter is not only relieved from paying dues; she will no longer receive The Royal Cross, cannot stand for or hold office, and cannot be a delegate at Triennial.  The purpose of this status is to provide relief for those chapters or members who pay dues for Daughters in deteriorating health.  It is not meant for every Daughter.

If you or your chapter has other members who are having difficulty paying dues, please request assistance through your DOK chapter, parish, DOK diocesan assembly, or DOK province. Limited funds are available at the National level when none of the previously listed levels are able to provide assistance.  Inquire through your chapter leaders if you need assistance paying dues.

Praying the Prayer List

It is a marvelous thing we are called to do, praying for others. But I have to confess to being rather overwhelmed sometimes ... often ... yes, even mostly.

Well, I'm here to tell you, I'm not alone. "Where two or more are gathered...," especially if they are Daughters, this subject comes up. Recently, I got into the discussion and did more than whine. I made us look at what some solutions might be and what others were already doing. I made a list of solutions we use and what we had heard from others. I hope you find something in these suggestions to ease your prayer life.

A couple of Daughters have said they keep their list on their "traffic pattern" at home. One is in the bathroom and the other by the phone. When they go by, they stop briefly, put their hand on the list and pray God's mercy on each person, asking for the perfect blessing. This isn't the only praying their list gets, but the method makes those crazily scheduled days feel filled with prayer.

My chapter's list is broken into topics: Praise and Thanksgiving, Healing, Special Needs, Rest in Peace, Travel and Perpetual. We don't necessarily know the specific need but the topic gives us an idea. It is comforting to know our God knows even better than we can ask. Someone in the chapter prays each topic one day during the week and does them all on the seventh day. This method makes her feel she can "really" pray for each person and do it well.

Another Daughter I know breaks up her list into 30 days. Everyone on the list gets prayed for especially on "their" day. People added during the month are prayed for the day they are received.

Several people have said they pray while driving, standing in line, waiting for appointments, walking, running. In fact, this seems to be a common practice of pray-ers: praying where they are, in all types of situations.

Another thing which came up in talking together was the "problem" of someone wanting prayer but not wanting people to know who or why. In this case, my chapter uses "Mary and Joseph" to indicate this special circumstance. Then "Mary" or "Joseph" gets the power of the whole chapter praying without the worry of people knowing. And really, do we need to know? God knows. Alleluia!

Now it might seem to you one or more of these methods of prayer just doesn't add up to "good prayer coverage." What you need to remember is everyone on the list is being lifted up every day by someone. You are doing what works for you and doing it with a good heart attitude, which beats an overwhelmed heart any day.

Bringing out the God-colors in the World

The following Scripture for the Province VI Retreat fit our theme, "God Colors in the World" to a "T."  It is also a perfect scripture to remind us who we are called to be as Daughters of the King.  We do more than pray.  We serve God and reflect Him in this world.

You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.  God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.  If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand--SHINE!  Keep open house; be generous with your lives.  By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16, The Message

As you begin planning your new year which begins in September, less than a month away, think about ways that your chapter can SHINE reflecting the "God Colors in the World," then try out your ideas. As the Angel of God always says..."Fear Not."

I Love This Cross

This is the cross that calls to me this month. I love the simplicity and spirituality I experience in the old missions of the Southwest.  Walking across the parking lot to one of the mission churches on the Mission Trail in San Antonio, Texas, I looked up at this cross.  Battered, weather beaten, and surrounded by a garden of prickly cactus (reminding me of how I sometimes feel), the cross invited me to come in to the serenity of the white-washed walls and old wood beams of the mission and to be still in God's presence.

Remember to send photos of your favorite cross for our photo gallery in the September issue of Cross+Links. This is the last call for photos so no more time to procrastinate.

Prayer for Junior Directresses

Almighty God we thank you for our Junior Directresses, whose devotion to you lead them in this call to follow you. May you fill them with grace and love to do the work you have given them to do. Enfold and enrich them in their relationships with you, O Lord, that they be filled with your wisdom, compassion, love, hope, understanding and patience so that they can be a daily reflection of you to those you have entrusted to them. This we pray in the blessed name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. AMEN.
