Prayer for the Endowment Fund

Almighty God, giver of all gifts,
we thank you for all the generous gifts given to the
Endowment Fund in thanksgiving, honor and remembrance
by members and friends of The Order.
Guide us in the wise use of these funds that our work
will be to the honor and glory of your Son,
our Savior Jesus Christ. AMEN.

Endowment Fund Report

Margaret J Franklin Center in Woodstock, Georgia

As you celebrated All Saints Day, did you think about the DOK Endowment Fund? While gifts are encouraged and welcome throughout the year, November 1, All Saints Day, is our formal ingathering. Who are the saints in your lives, living and those no longer with us? Consider honoring them with a contribution to the Fund. Daughters give when a child marries, when a grandchild is born, when a beloved spouse dies. Beyond personal gifts, does your chapter honor deceased Daughters through gifts to the Fund, not just in the years of their demise, but in the years thereafter. A member in one church in Washington, D.C., annually puts poinsettias or Easter lilies on the altar in memory of two seminal women in the parish who were powerful Daughters. This beautiful gesture keeps their example alive. Think about honoring such women through the Fund and allow gifts in their names to continue the work of the Order they loved. The Endowment Fund received about $140,000 during the fiscal year ending August 31, 2012, a munificent outpouring. The fund prudently invested those monies and has enjoyed the recent gains in the stock market. Income is used to support the Order's mission and operations; the principal remains intact. Records of gifts are maintained in the Order's archives at its national headquarters.

Let me share one story from the Fund's history about the glory of stepping out on faith. Around 2000, after much prayer and discussion, the Order broke with longstanding practice and tapped the Fund to purchase a building for our national headquarters. This controversial move essentially decimated the Fund, which contained about $300,000 at the time. Today, the headquarters is fully paid for and the Endowment Fund has over $1 million. You did it with your prayers and generosity. Thank you and please keep it up.

The Archives in the Margaret J Franklin Center

Wall hung case in Archives
If you could visit the Archives room in the Margaret J. Franklin Center, I could show you these recent donations to the Order - fascinating to anyone interested in the history of the Order:
  • Several photo albums, containing National Council-related photos from 1979 up into the 1990s, from Bertha Milbank, former Jr. DOK chair and Vice President.
  • A 1925 Handbook from Central Florida.
  • A treasure trove of documents from an archivist in Connecticut that included about a dozen DOK brochures from the 30s, Triennial reports and programs from 1928 and 1934, letters from several officers who were then or later became presidents of the Order, and so on.
  • A wall hung case for displaying small artifacts - like crosses and old handbooks. This was a special gift from the Province IV board.
The gift of the display case motivated me to take a closer look at our older crosses in order to attempt a chronological arrangement. Some crosses were sent with a name and date attached, but even then we don't know when the cross was presented. Records in the 1920s, however, note that at the request of members the cross was modified to round off the sharp points at the end of each bar. I began to notice more details of the pre-1925 crosses that indicate an evolution in the initial design, which can guide the display of the antique crosses.

If you have a chapter in your province celebrating a century, like the one in Houston this month, or those in Florida and DC in the recent past, please make copies of any historical records or timelines and present them to the Archives. Also, if you have notable members - either because of their many years as Daughters or their significant accomplishments - consider interviewing them and transcribing the interview for our archives. Oral history, labeled photos and key documents are ways we tell our story as Daughters of the King.

National Council Transitions
Metro Griffith

Metro Griffith has resigned from her position on the National Council due to recent challenges in her personal life.  A former Province IV President, Metro had served since Triennial 2012 as Membership Chair and Service and Evangelism Chair on Council until health concerns and the loss of her son made it impossible for her to continue. On behalf of the Celebration Chapter (National Council), I thank Metro for her devotion to our Lord and to the Order.  She will be greatly missed on the Council, but she will continue to serve God through her ministry to the homeless whom she feeds at St. Philip's, Jacksonville, FL.  Please hold our dear sister in your prayers.
Krisita Jackson

The Executive Board assisted me in appointing a replacement for Metro's position on the National Council. Krisita Jackson from Orlando, Florida accepted this appointment and was able to join us for part of the recent National Council meeting in Atlanta. Krisita has been a Daughter of the King since 1999 and has served as President of the Diocesan Assembly of Central Florida since 2009. She has served her church and community in countless ways and is currently Senior Warden of her parish, The Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist in Orlando. The Celebration Chapter welcomes Krisita and asks that you keep her in your prayers as well, as she assumes this new responsibility in leadership.

An Editor's Work is Never Done

Grace Sears
The Living Church magazine has been an independent publication since the late 19th century. It covers news and thoughtful articles related to the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. They also publish the Episcopal Musician's Handbook. Meeting in early October 2013 in Milwaukee, the Board of the Magazine elected two new board members. One of the newly elected members is our own Dr. Grace Sears of Berea, Kentucky.

Grace is The Order's immediate past President and currently serves as advisor to Pam Runyon. She is a past editor of The Royal Cross and current assistant editor. As a member of the Living Church Foundation Board, she will aid in the oversight of that organization's publishing ministry. Congratulations, Grace, we wish you well in your new opportunity to use God's gifts.

The first chapter in Kinkiizi Diocese in Uganda was instituted on Sunday 27 by our Country Coordinator, April Dobbs. April traveled to Kanungu expecting 62 new Senior Daughters--and found that 100 had completed the course!

Province IV Fall Assembly / Retreat

Speaker, The Rev Janet Echols
We celebrated our Fall Assembly/Retreat at Kanuga Conference Center in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina near Hendersonville at the beginning of October. The weather was perfect and the fall colors just beginning to show.

Our speaker, the Rev. Janet Echols, recently returned as a missionary to India, spoke on Evangelism, and led us through the 7 "A"s of "A"vangelism as found in Acts 8:26-35. We also watched a movie on spiritual revival through prayer, and had a dynamic prayer session. Several of our workshops were about evangelism, and others were crafts, and Diocesan President forums. We were blessed to have Joan Dalrymple, former National President, as our guest and she led her acclaimed workshop on the Healing Prayer Ministry, just before our Healing Service.

Each year we honor our departed Daughters in a moving Memorial Service, and the flowers that we had placed on our cross were cast into Kanuga Lake just before we left, while singing "God be With You til we Meet Again" and "Amazing Grace".

After rededicating ourselves at the Closing Eucharist, we left the mountain refreshed and prepared to bring many people to Christ, especially women and girls.

Time to Follow-up

Dues for this fiscal year (September 1, 2013 - August 31, 2014) are $40 for Seniors ($15 for Juniors) and were due on September 1, 2013. During the month of November, the National Office will send follow-up dues notices either by mail or email to those individuals who have not paid their dues. A few weeks after this follow-up, Daughters who still owe dues are no longer considered "current" and will not receive the Royal Cross or be eligible to serve as a delegate or hold office.

To help you meet your responsibility we offer a couple of ways for you to pay your dues. You may mail a payment to the National Office or pay online. You must know your member number to pay online. Your member number is available on the Royal Cross mailing label or from your chapter president or by calling the National Office. Click here to find our information page on the website to include forms and online payment link.

For those (including Daughters at Large) that occasionally need financial help, scholarship funds may be available through the chapter, diocese, or province. This is one way Daughters truly love and support each other. If you find yourself unable to pay your dues this year, please contact your Chapter or Diocesan leaders to request this assistance.

If you believe your dues have been paid and you have received a follow-up notice in error, please follow the guidelines below. This will help us ensure accuracy in our record-keeping.
  • If your dues were paid through your chapter or parish, please check with them first to see if they have submitted your dues yet. If they have, please ask them to call the National Office with the check number and the date the check cleared the bank.
  • If your dues were paid directly to the National Office, please check with your bank to verify that the check has cleared, then call the National Office with your check number and the date the check cleared the bank.
We hope this information helps you fulfill one of your responsibilities as a Daughter. Please note that mailing follow-up dues notices cost the Order over two thousand dollars last year.  Paying your dues promptly (on or before Sept. 1) helps us direct that money into the mission of the Order instead.

The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, we give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
