A Morning Prayer

O blessed Jesus, whom to know is everlasting life and who did walk through the lanes and fields of Galilee with your disciples, go forth with us this day as we go about our tasks and duties. Go before us in welcome, be with us in fellowship along the way and as we pass by, remain in the hearts of those we touch, for you are the beginning and the end, the same yesterday, today and forever, our Lord and Savior.  AMEN

International DVD

The International DVD is now Available!

The International DVD that I presented on International Night at Triennial 2012 can now be ordered from the National Office. Please accept my apologies for the delays in editing and final production. Even though the DVD was outdated almost immediately after it was produced, I think the message is still timely. I hope that many of you will be inspired, as I have been, as you learn more about our sisters from around the world. The International DVD can be purchased for $10 from the National Office using the updated order form located on the website.

Update on International Daughters
Int Triennial
International Daughters at Triennial with Bishop Skilton, International Chaplain, and Pam Runyon.
(Not pictured - Daughters from Israel)

Our current International Chair, Emily Thrasher, is doing a great job coordinating international Daughters, and she and the Regional Coordinators work hard to keep up with our explosive growth. I would like to remind you of some of the exciting changes that have taken place internationally since Triennial:.

  • We discovered that Malawi has almost 2,500 Daughters - not 1000!
  • Honduras held their first National Assembly in November, 2012 and now has 30 chapters!
  • The Diocese of Durgapur in India now has 2 Senior chapters and a Junior chapter is in formation!
  • We reconnected with Daughters in Uganda and a new chapter was instituted in January!
  • The Order was revived in Panama when a new chapter was formed in January!
  • A new chapter was formed in Augsburg, Germany and another chapter is in formation in Frankfurt!
  • We have reconnected with Daughters in Cuba!
  • Eight new Daughters will be admitted to El Buen Pastor Chapter, the first chapter in Spain, on June 16 outside of Madrid!
  • Our first chapter in Italy will be instituted in Rome on June 23!
    .
I ask that you join me in prayer for Daughters here in the US and all around the world, especially those who are taking their vows this month. On June 23, the same day that the Paulines for the Kingdom take their vows in Rome, 4 new Daughters, including Eva Romero (wife of our dear National Chaplain) will be admitted to the new Santa Ana Chapter at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in San Jose, CA! And also on June 23, 7 new Daughters will join my home chapter at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Hickory, NC!

May God bless each and every one of you, and may we be instruments of God's love both here and abroad, as we work together to spread His Kingdom throughout the world.

Rule of Prayer:  Building a Personal Prayer Book

cross      Taking an idea here, a meditation there, and adding a passion has become a personal prayer book for me. This book is a way to collect all the cards and inspirational pieces into one place for me to use as a tool in my prayer life. Try it -- a personal prayer bookmay be helpful to you also.

First, find a photo album, new or repurposed. Smaller is better to fit into bags and travel well. Second, gather pieces with a purpose: Your favorite Bible verse, collect, hymn (verse or refrain), your favorite inspirational quote NOT from the bible, and photos or pictures that speak to you. As you gather up each of these pieces (and don't do this all in one day, spread it out), reflect/meditate on how God is speaking to you through these words and pictures. How can you live into His message?
This is where adding a passion comes in. I love to take photos, so I have "illustrated" my pages of verses and inspirational pieces with photos. You may be an artist, a spiritual doodler, or a writer; embellish with what speaks to you. This is the start of your personal prayer book. Let God speak to you through it, now and again in the future. Be prepared, though, this book has a life of its own and may grow into more than one volume.

Living into our Rule of Service:  Visitation

Flowers      St. Lucia Chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King at the Church of the Nativity in Port St. Lucie, Florida has implemented a Homebound Daughters visitation program. Some Sisters were discussing the visitation of shut-ins and noted that several members of our Chapter are homebound. These Sisters are unable to attend the meetings and miss an important part of being a Daughter.

The structure of the Homebound Visit is informal, focusing on the Order of the Daughters of the King, with each Daughter adding her special touch. Gail Olmeda shared her visitation experience at a recent meeting. She went to see Jane Moscato, a devoted Daughter of more than fifty years. As a friend, she was able to take Jane a meal and provide other personal gestures of kindness. Gail prayed the Daughters of the King Prayer List with Jane and shared some devotional material that she uses daily.

Other Daughters, such as a Lyn Marino, utilize their special ministry gifts during their visits. Lyn is a Lay Eucharistic Minister and took Holy Communion to her Sister. Joan Garman recalled one of her visitations that she made along with another Sister. Joan prayed the Daughters of the King Prayer List and some healing prayers with her homebound Sister. She shared some articles from her personal devotions. Her Sister also received some beautiful tulips. Daughters, such as Helen Tarof, use the Altar Flowers from the Sunday Service in their visits.

Daughters are encouraged to make the visits two by two with another Sister, just as the Disciples did. Our monthly chapter meetings close in a circle with the Prayer for Absent Members from the Handbook. Each absent Sister is lifted by name in prayer. It is important to keep the circle of Sisterhood and friendship constant. The goal is to encourage our Sisters in Christ and to share God's love and His perfect peace with them.

For the Good Use of Leisure

O God, in the course of this busy life, give us times of refreshment and peace; and grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild our bodies and renew our minds, that our spirits may be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN
