Prayer of St Columba

Be, Lord Jesus, a bright flame before me,
a guiding star above me,
a smooth path below me,
a kindly shepherd behind me;
today, tonight, and forever.

Sunday, January 20, 2013, was a day of great celebration at the Cathedral of St. Luke in Panama City, Panama.  The St. Clare Chapter was instituted by National DOK Chaplain, Bishop Sylvestre Romero.  Also participating in the service were Diocesan Bishop Julio Murray, the Dean of the Cathedral and Chaplain of the St. Clare Chapter, Reverenda Maiziee Lennon, and retired Diocesan Bishop of Panama, Bishop James Ottley.

Online Resources for Lent

    How many of you are looking for an online Lenten devotional?  Are you looking for something that will be delivered to your inbox every day and won't require you to buy another book?  You want to go green?  Is your chapter seeking a way to make their Lenten Devotions fresh and new? Well, I have good news for you! This year I have two recommendations that I'd like to share with you: Lent Madness, brought to you by Tim Schenck and Scott Gunn, who is Chief Executive Officer of the Forward Movement, and Episcopal Relief and Development's "Lenten Meditations". Each has wonderful features, and we can use one or both to enhance our Lenten experience. I have also  suggested how you or your chapter can put  these devotions into action.

     Beginning with Lent Madness, this brings the concept of March Madness off the basketball court to the online world with an emphasis on the lives of the saints and  many of the same people who are featured in HOLY WOMEN, HOLY MEN. The featured saints of the day are paired up, just like teams in March Madness, into brackets. If this is unfamiliar to you, please check out the www.lentmadness.org  website. If you want to participate, go online to register and have all the daily Lent Madness info sent to your inbox.  When you are on the LentMadness.org website, take a tour of the site and see what it has to offer.  The site will have the resources you'll need.  Print up a Lent Madness 2013 bracket for the daily head-to-head competitions between the featured saints. Every day you will vote for the saint of your choice; don't forget to learn about the saints.  (If you wish, you may purchase the book, Calendar of Saints: Lent Madness 2013 in paperback, Kindle, or Nook versions from Amazon.com).  As the weeks progress you will notice that the brackets have a March Madness feel and at the end the Saint who comes out on top will win the Golden Halo. Last year's winner was Mary Magdalene!  Who will it be this year?

     The second online devotion I recommend is the annual Lenten Meditations from Episcopal Relief and Development.  You can sign up for daily devotions via email at www.er-d.org and look for the Lenten resources. You are welcome to download the Lenten Meditations booklet to your computer or have the meditations delivered to your inbox. This year, ERD is focusing on hunger and its eradication. This is one of the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals). Since we have many International Daughters who live in or near affected areas where hunger is more pronounced, it is quite appropriate to have this year's meditations focus on hunger.

Uganda

The Alpha Chapter at St. Peter's Cathedral in Kabale, Uganda which was instituted on January 6, 2013. Present with Bp. George Katwesigye is the Chapter Chaplain, the Rev. David Rurihoona, and April Dobbs, the Country Coordinator for Uganda.

     April reported that this chapter is the first DOK chapter in the history of the Diocese of Kigezi (DOK!). Laura Katwesigye, the wife of the Bishop, is the first President. The 25 women who were able to be present (4 more will be admitted later) looked beautiful in their various blue skirts and white blouses, and they are all very serious about belonging to the Order.

How to Submit Articles for the Royal Cross

     Have you ever wondered why you don't see much 'news' from your Province in The Royal Cross? Perhaps the reason is that nothing ever happens in your Province, but we don't really believe that! It's more likely the process of submitting news items is too confusing, or you are not sure what information you need to submit or how to do it.

     Well, the  Royal Cross editors have decided to help encourage the submission of 'news' items from around the Provinces and make sure we get all the information we need with each news item you share. This month we have launched a new Around the Provinces Submission Form. You only have to fill in the blanks, write a few words about your photo and event in the space provided, attach the picture and submit the form directly to me. A link can be found on the home page of the National website.
     So let's try it out! Click this link to go to the form:  http://doknational.com/MemberResources/royal-cross-article-submission/ (in some cases you may have to copy this address and put it into your browser box). Or use the link on the home page of the national web site. Fill in the required information and describe your event. Attach a picture of the event just as you would attach an image to an email, by clicking on the "browse" button to access your computer directories and navigate to the image file you want to send.  Your image should not be resized and must be at least 200 Kb to be published. Ideal size is 1Mb, and larger files will be accepted up to 3Mb. Press "submit" and you're done. (For those of us who are still nervous about doing this, save a copy of what you have written before submitting it.) You will receive a confirmation email within a few minutes containing a record of everything you have submitted. I will take it from there, making any final edits and verifying space requirements before it is ready for an upcoming issue of the Royal Cross. So go ahead and try it out!

Looking forward to all your 'news'

Lenten mantra

For those of us who like the discipline of a daily mantra to use during Lent, we suggest reading or singing the following verse from Hymn 694:

God be in my head, and in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking;

God be at mine end, and at my departing.
