Prayer for Self-Denial Fund

O God, who makes the Church the messenger of your Gospel, accept this gift of your Daughters to speed your message to the whole world and to enable your love to be the portion of all, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Master.   Amen.

We as Daughters are called to bring others to Christ by showing our love to others in the world. This may be done through kind deeds, telling our story of faith in Christ, or by giving of our resources to help others in need. Some may wish to start a mission project in their community or travel to other countries as missionaries. Lord, what will you have me do?

February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, is a special day for the ingathering of the Self-Denial Fund for our Order. The funds are used to support mission projects around the world and any Daughter may apply for a grant to support a particular mission project. Since I have taken on the responsibility of this fund we have funded grants for the following projects.

  • The Rev. Patricia Powers to work with the DOK in the Episcopal Anglican Church of Brazil.
  • Faith Journey Missions for Terry & Pam Newton on a mission trip to China.
  • Eunice Hoffman for a medical mission to the Dominican Republic.
  • West TN/Haiti Partnership for splints for children with clubfeet
  • Wonderful Days Preschool for program costs for low-income families
  • Cornerstone Kids for building reading skills for children in low-income neighborhood
  • Compass Rose Society to redesign the Anglican Communion's website to spread the word of Christ
  • St. Peter Episcopal Church, Salem, MA to support and continue Taize Prayer service in a diverse community.

As you can see from the list, the mission projects are varied in locality and type of work being done. The grant requests range from $500-$5000. The application form has been put on the DOK website. After completing the form the requests are reviewed by a committee to vote on funding. The process takes place when we have funding available. This is where the Daughters can become partners in mission work. Your donations to the Self Denial Fund, no matter how much, are combined to make our mission work spread to many parts of the world. Please give generously so we can continue our mission projects.

West Tennessee Haiti Partnership

St Vincent's Center for Handicapped Children, Port au Prince, Haiti will be receiving Denis Browne splints for children with club feet from a DOK Self-Denial grant. Each splint includes the special shoes required for the treatment. Application of the splints during infancy or childhood would prevent children from going thru life crippled and in wheelchairs. Dr. Susan Nelson from West TN Partnership has provided medical care to the children with twice a year medical missions. Dr. Beauvoir is the pediatric orthopedist at St. Vincent's.

The grant was of special interest to me as my youngest sister was born with clubfeet and 50 years ago the treatment was not done until the child started to walk. Healing was complete so she walks with no limp.

New Wineskins

Every three years, speakers from around the world and missionaries from many agencies come to New Wineskins, a missionary conference held in Ridgecrest, NC. This year it will take place on April 4-7, 2013.

New Wineskins Missionary Network (formerly the Episcopal Church Missionary Community) began in 1974 in Pasadena, CA, and is a founding member of the U.S. Center for World Mission.

Their mission is "to inspire and equip clergy, lay leaders, youth ministers, mission mobilizers, potential missionaries, and entire congregations to fulfill our Lord's Great Commission to make disciples of all nations." (Website for New Wineskins, www.newwineskins.org)

Over 900 Episcopal/Anglican participants from 33 states and provinces in the U.S, Canada, and 36 other countries came to New Wineskins 2010 and many of them were Daughters. Please do consider joining us as we hear inspiring speakers, participate in workshops, pray for Christians around the world, and join in glorious worship.

The conference is $225 per person, with a scholarship rate of $125 per person for long-term missionaries, seminarians and spouses. There are special rates for children and families. Register for New Wineskins 2013 by March 5 at www.newwineskins.org. Reservations for lodging and food may be made at 1-800-588-7222.

News from the Literature Chair

The new 2012 National Handbook is here! Complete with the updated bylaws approved at Triennial, the new Handbook has undergone some major renovations. We've updated the
sections on Chaplains, the Master's Fund, International Chapters, and the Timeline, just to name a few. We've also improved the "How To Form a Daughter's Chapter" - Senior, Junior and International. Further we've included the Prayer and Motto of the Order in the inside cover of the Handbook for easy reference. But that's not all!

As an option, the 2012 National Handbook will be available in 8 1/2 X 11" sized paper, three-hole punched, but not bound so that it easily fits into a 3-ring binder. This is just an option; the National Handbook will still be available in its normal size with blue cover. In addition, the Handbook is available in a Large Print edition.

No matter what form you choose, please purchase the new 2012 National Handbook as soon as possible and encourage everyone in your chapter to do the same. The old Handbooks are now out of date. Of course these new changes mean that the page numbers have changed so Handbooks from different years will not have the same page numbers. We apologize for any inconvenience but these changes are necessary as we continue to update and improve our Handbook.

For future reference, our National Handbook will be updated every three years to coincide with any Bylaw changes made at Triennial. Every effort will be made to avoid updating it more often than every three years.

Are you a Diocesan Assembly President? New on the website is "A Primer for Diocesan Assembly Presidents". This is a great resource for Diocesan Presidents and contains a lot of important "need to know" information. Be sure to download your copy today from  the Officer's Corner on our National website.

Also new to the Officer's Corner is "A Guide for Diocesan Assembly Chaplains" which includes reflections by our National Chaplain, Bishop Silvestre Romero. This guide summarizes what clergy can and perhaps should do when serving as chaplains for the Order at the diocesan assembly level.

Lastly, we are in the process of creating a brand new Chapter Manual. Our Committee is hard at work putting it together. But we need your help. We would like input from Chapter presidents as to how the Manual can help you and what topics need to be covered. Join the conversation and connect with chapter presidents from around the country on the new Yahoo Group for Chapter presidents. Email me and ask for an invitation to join. We look forward to seeing you there!
