The Prayer of the Order | |
Have you taken the time recently to read "The Prayer of our Order" slowly, thoughtfully, letting the phrases and thoughts resonate in your mind before going on to the next group of words? It is such a powerful prayer, one so representing of our lives as Daughters of the King and how our Lord wants to inspire us to do His will as His ambassadors on Earth.
Meditating on each phrase can produce some clarity in how to keep experientially growing in Prayer, Service, and Evanglism as our Maker wants us to do. God wants each of us to use our personal gifts to ask God for an intuitive thought on how He wants us to be as the day unfolds. We, then, as Daughters, can show through our actions God's love for us as His children on earth. How we act towards one another and our humility are such good ways to show God's desire for each of us to carry out God's 'good news'. And that Christianity is a loving, caring way to live.
God's plan is unique for all of us and allows us, as Daughters, daily progress and chances to step up to what will provide help for others, a Sisterhood for us, and evangelism as Christians in a world that these days is sometimes difficult to understand. Being "God conscious" helps us to remember that it is His work that we are called upon to do. Praise God for our Sisterhood and the Prayer of our Order!

"The Prayer of the Order"
O eternal Father, you have sent us your Son to teach us things pertaining to your heavenly Kingdom. Give your blessing to our Order wherever it may be throughout the world. Grant that we, your Daughters, every may discern your truth and bear the cross through the battles of our earthly life. Give us strength to overcome temptation and the grace to work to spread your Kingdom and to gather your scattered sheep within your fold. Pour out upon us the sevenfold gift of the Holy Spirit that we may always remember it is your work we are called to do, that all we think, do or say may be pleasing in your sight. We ask it all For His Sake, our King and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Word from Margaret Franklin. . . . .
1928 was a great year for the Order! One exciting event was our trip to the White House to meet with President Calvin Coolidge to pray for the nation. About 200 of us were able to attend. We do have photographs with the President on the White House lawn. We asked President Coolidge to establish a National Day of Prayer on the national calendar, and he said he would consider doing that. But he did not. Years later a President named Ronald Reagan did put the National Day of Prayer on the yearly national calendar; however, I wanted you to know - it was our idea!
The other exciting event was our establishment of the Endowment Fund for the benefit of the Order. Memorial contributions and thanksgiving gifts enable us to grow our Endowment Fund, which helps us with expenses of the Order and with unexpected emergencies and events - like floods or storm damage.
My prayer is that each of you will consider making a donation to the Endowment Fund this All Saint's Day in memory of someone who touched your life in a special way, or in thanksgiving for God's blessings upon us as Daughters of the King.

| Prayer, Service, Evangelism. . . Endowment Fund? | |
How does supporting the Endowment Fund help Daughters live out our vows? I have considered this question since being asked to chair the Endowment Fund Committee several months ago. On reflection, I think of the Fund as a statement of faith in the future of the Order and in each other. The Daughters' other funds - Master's, Self-Denial and Alpha - are disbursed on an ongoing basis; we can see how our funds help a woman study for the priesthood, or build a well in Africa or send Junior Daughters to a retreat. The Endowment Fund is less transparent. While some annual disbursements are made to reflect Daughters' payment of lifetime dues, the bulk of the Fund is invested to generate income and build a foundation to assure the Order's growth into the future. Our gifts to the Endowment Fund represent the "substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
Giving to the Fund is an expression of confidence in each other as individuals, as well as in the Order as an institution. Money is power, and in turning it over to others we give up some measure of control. Donations to the Endowment Fund for some future purpose express trust that the Order's current leadership - and its unknown future leaders - will make prudent investment decisions and generally practice good stewardship. Finally, service on the Endowment Committee challenges its members to meet those expectations. Our example is the servant with five talents.
Thank you for your past support of the Fund and your prayers for its growth and health.

Tour of the Chapel | |
In her article in this issue of Cross+Links, Laura Richards describes our gifts to the Endowment Fund as representing "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." In 1999, on the advice of their chaplain, The Rt. Rev. Roger White, the women of that National Council took the bold step of converting some of the monies donated over the decades in faith and hope into a thing of substance. They authorized the purchase of four office condominiums in which to house our National Office. One of those offices became our chapel at the Margaret J Franklin Center. Join us in a brief tour.
Furnishing the chapel is an ongoing statement of faith and hope and thanksgiving. The wooden altar in this photo was crafted and built by Edwin Boyle, donated by Ethel Boyle Ripley (National President 1985-1988). The wooden podium was donated by Carol Gaskill (National Council 1997-2006). Beryl Rouse crafted, sewed, and donated the blue silk banner in memory of past presidents.
The large wooden cross on the wall was crafted by Maggie Sacks of Akin, South Carolina, and donated by Clara Clarkson (former president of the Upper South Carolina Diocese).
The stations of the cross on the walls of the chapel were donated by Kathy Wohnoutka (Former National Treasurer).
These are just a few of the items Daughters and friends of Daughters have donated in the generous spirit of community in our Order. We hope you have enjoyed this brief tour. |

The Endowment Fund Prayer
Almighty God, giver of all gifts, we thank you for all the generous gifts given to the Endowment Fund in thanksgiving, honor and remembrance by members and friends of The Order. Guide us in the wise use of these funds that our work will be to the honor and glory of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
