Note- Add to Calendar: Pay Dues by September 1st !

Many of us find that our lives are so full that we need reminders for everything: Hair appointment on Monday, Quilt Guild on Tuesday, Lunch with Mary Catherine and Bobbie on Wednesday, and don't forget the State Fair on Thursday! These are just a few items from my calendar this week and I am sure that yours are equally full.

The primary way that the financial needs of the Order are met is through annual dues paid by each Daughter. This money is used to support the work of the Order at the national, provincial, and diocesan levels and includes a subscription to The Royal Cross, our national quarterly publication.

Dues for the upcoming fiscal year (September 1, 2012 - August 31, 2013) are $35 for Seniors ($15 for Juniors) and are due on September 1, 2012. The annual dues packets were mailed in May 2012 to the Chapter presidents with a Chapter List to verify that all chapter members are paid for this year. For those (including Daughters at Large) that occasionally need financial help, scholarship funds may be available through the chapter, diocese, or province. This is one way Daughters truly love and support each other.

In November the National Office staff will send follow-up notices to those who still owe their dues, but please know that these reminders cost the Order in time and supplies. A few weeks after this 2nd dues notice, Daughters who still owe dues are no longer considered in "good standing" and will not receive the Royal Cross or be eligible to serve as a delegate or hold office. Please don't let this happen to you because you forgot to put this important information on your calendar and make your payment in time!

According to the National handbook, the duties of a Daughter include loving God and having affection for her neighbors; praying to Jesus who is her intimate friend; and serving her King in and through His family, the Holy Church. One of the ways to help accomplish these duties is for a Daughter to pay her National, Provincial, Diocesan, and Chapter dues promptly.

To help you meet your responsibility we offer several ways in which to pay your dues. The primary way dues are received is to provide payment to your Chapter President who will then forward a consolidated payment and listing to the National Office. For Daughters at Large or others who choose, you may mail a payment to the National Office or pay online at Pay Dues (you must know your member number to pay online).

Our website covers all this information with forms and requirements included. Check us out at Dues Information Page

Alpha Fund
Juniors at Triennial

The Alpha Fund is going into its fourth year! Thanks to our members generous support of this Fund we have been able to award over $18,000 in grants to our Junior Daughters. These grants have been used to provide transportation to Provincial Assemblies, subsidize Diocesan retreats, supply materials for chapter programs and finance a variety of chapter projects, such as purchasing grocery items for needy families and making dolls for girls in Haiti. These opportunities may never have happened were it not for the support of the Alpha Fund. Further, the Alpha Fund was put to great use by offering a scholarship to reduce the cost of Juniors attending this year's Triennial.

The first three years of the Fund's existence has been a big success. With our members' continued support we hope to build on this success and provide even more opportunities for Junior Daughters to fellowship, and undertake meaningful projects that serve their church, community and most importantly our Lord Jesus Christ. The Alpha Fund's in-gathering date is September 5th please donate as a chapter or an individual. Directresses we look forward to your applications.

Let's keep this fund growing and continue to use it to share the love of Christ to all.

Choosing a Chaplain

I recently completed two years as Province Five chaplain, having been asked to serve in that capacity by my Bishop, Jeffrey Lee.   I left parish ministry in 2007 to pursue a counseling and spiritual direction practice. I have been ordained since 1983, serving a wide range of ministries. My freedom from parish responsibilities meant that I had ready availability to attend and offer clergy leadership for provincial meetings. Without the parish focus, I was also more free to offer prayer for the DOK women of the Province. I was honored to serve in this way. It was a gift to me.

I believe the choice of a chaplain for a DOK parish chapter, a diocese, or a province is one that needs to be made with care, prayer, and discernment. The role of chaplain is one of presence and prayer. A sense of humor helps as well.   Many bishops and parish clergy have served as chaplains. Many have served well. I believe that being chaplain is much more than an honorific role, and, done well, it may well require someone who sees this calling to be a vital part of his or her ministry. And someone who sees the role of chaplain as a gift.
