FROM THE CEO
The APEX Expo was a useful forum for meeting and catching up, sharing news and discussing how the market is evolving with our customers, partners, suppliers and competitors.
With APEX being in the US, much of the discussion is around the popularity of inflight Wi-Fi, but the rest of the world is using GSM. Passengers actually want to use their mobile devices over GSM because you just switch on and do what you do the ground. There's no messing about with credit cards, and you can email, surf the Internet, use SMS and yes, make calls. Consequently, when both Wi-Fi and GSM services are available, over 80% of passengers using connectivity choose GSM.
I was also reminded by our partners and suppliers that our customer base is very international. We have the widest geographical reach of any service provider, with the most airline customers. We can do that because we have a unique network of authorizations from nearly 100 countries and over 350 roaming agreements. These are key assets that have taken years to build.
Our news was that we launched OnAir Play and for the first time, we have combined connectivity with films, TV, live news, music, games, magazines and newspapers. We are catering for the on-demand generation and reflecting our behaviour when we are at home: scheduled TV is rapidly becoming out of date. We are focused on giving passengers what they want.
Sincerely
Ian Dawkins
