It's been so hot and humid here in LA that I am actually orange-leaves-tree.jpg missing our usual non-weather.  Of course, that's not a true statement-about non-weather.  It's typically hot in September, but hot and dry and it is the mugginess that confuses.  It's also enervating-making it hard to work.  Or rather, hard to get into work.
Working, I find, is a joy.  Getting into it....not so much.  I procrastinate, find other things that must be done, take the dogs for yet another walk.  I wonder what it would be like to hate my work!
Procrastination is one thing; perfectionism another.  (READ MORE)

This month we'll be talking about the good and bad sides of sustainability, learning about your donors' motives, and once you have those donors, some ways to ensure that you keep them.

Sustainability--Is This What You Should Be Aiming For?
My local NPR station has been touting their "one and done" crowdfunding.jpg on air pledge appeal.  "When we reach the amount we need to sustain us, we will go off air."  I don't get it.
Sustainability means being able to continue doing  what you have been doing.  There's nothing wrong with that, but it isn't compelling.  And if it isn't compelling, it has no urgency, and no urgency means that maybe I just won't give.
As a fundraising consultant, I'm all for building a sustainable fundraising program.  This would ensure that now and forever, your nonprofit (the one you work or volunteer for and/or the one you love) will raise the money necessary to change the world and make the daily miracles that nonprofit tend to make.  But, that doesn't mean that you are raising just enough money to simply sustain what you do. Fundraising and Donor Software

Donor Software.  Fundraisers know that this can be the Holy white_mouse_keyboard.jpg Grail for increasing the effectiveness of their fundraising work.  But too often, the software we have doesn't met our needs-and when it does, too often we really don't know how to use the data the software stores.

A study (study) from Software Advice  looks at which things make a fundraiser look for new software and what things they want from the software they are considering.  (READ MORE)

Keeping Donors
reaching_hands_hdr.jpg

There are two immutable facts about fund raising. The first is that it is all about relationships. The second, which follows seamlessly on the first, is that your best prospect is an existing donor-if you have treatedthat donor well.
A third undeniable fact is that donors cease to donate to an organization mainly because the organization has not responded appropriately to that donor's generosity.
In fund raising, how you treat your donors is called Stewardship, and it is arguably the most important part of fund development. And yet, too many nonprofit organizations never bother to steward their most important assets: their donors. (READ MORE)
