My husband, the engineer, is totally methodical about everything he does.  I, on the other hand, not so much.  He's slo-o-o-w.  I am very fast.
Our differences used to drive me crazy, but over the years, I've learned to value his meticulousness.  After, he's not the person who booked the flight in the wrong month or the hotel in the wrong city!
What I've really learned to appreciate is how he thinks things through and considers how what he is doing impacts other things.  It's made me think more about what I am doing and what I hope to accomplish. (READ MORE)

This month we'll be talking about how to get where you want to go without crashing, things you need to legally solicit donors, getting those donors to yes by....listening.  And some advice from young people.
Keep reading.  I hope you find it all of value

It's The Law!
Charity Compliance Solutions  works with you to ensure your nonprofit is fundraising legally in every state where you ask for support. They can help you with your registrations and filings and make sure that all your T's are crossed and I's are dotted.

In order for your organization to legally solicit contributions in the United States, it is necessary to register and obtain a license with approximately 40 states prior to any solicitation taking place. Who needs to register for charitable solicitation? All nonprofits have some requirement to register in states prior to beginning any solicitation campaign, not just 501(c)(3) exempt organizations.
501(c)(4) organizations and 501(c)(19) organizations (veterans' organizations) also have certain registration requirements.  Higher educational institutions, religious organizations, hospitals, foundations, and member organizations may qualify for certain exemptions but are still required to register for these exemptions and make their presence known before asking for donations. To help ensure your compliance, we've answered some of the most frequently asked questions.  (READ MORE)
Building Bonds With Donors

We're always so busy telling prospects and donors about us-our good works, our success, the things we need-we too often forget to ask them about themselves.  We especially forget to ask our supporters for anything other than a gift.
And no shock here, being constantly asked for money tires donors and gives them that infamous "donor fatigue."

A simple request to your donors to "Tell me about your experience with us," can turn that tiredness into energy, especially if you are truly willing to hear their answer and respond appropriately. (READ MORE
Out of the Mouths of.....

A few months ago, the Chronicle of Philanthropy published professional-adults.jpg an article where college students talked about how nonprofits can attract young talent. The answers were depressingly predictable:
  • We have to make them feel that leadership roles are possible. Sure. I agree. But lately, as more and more boomers are retiring, I'm finding that many organizations are turning to the very young to lead them. Many of these 20-somethings would, some day, be fantastic leaders. But that day is not today. And worse, they have no mentors in their organizations-organizations that have few staff at all-to help them learn important stuff. Like, what they don't know they don't know (READ MORE)
