The Philosophy of "No Problem"

While recently on vacation with my family in Jamaica, we hired a local resident for a day as a tour guide. We spent 13 hours in one day not only relaxing and enjoying the country, but we were exposed to the culture, the challenges and the personality of the people in a way that you can never receive on a commercial tour.

During our time with Orville (our guide), we learned that the average weekly wage is $50, that poverty is the norm, that AIDS remains an epidemic, that unemployment rates are extremely high, and that alcoholism and drug addiction is common. However. we also learned that in spite of the bleak outlook, many of those living in the midst of the madness have a remarkable attitude.

One statement we kept hearing from the locals was "no problem". Ask a question, and the common answer was either "yea mon" (yes man), or "no problem". Orville was kind enough to explain to us that "no problem" meant that there are really few problems. Instead of problems, he said they only had situations. He went on to say, that "the only time you have a problem, is when you can't resolve the situation".

The more I heard it, the more I thought about it. The more I thought about it the more I agreed with it. The David Corey Company provides home modifications services to its clients. Many times home modifications require significant demolition and construction to take place on someone's residence. If you have ever built a home, or had remodeling or repairs completed, you know that there are always issues or "problems" that arise.

I have preached the message many times that with any construction project, problems are not the exception, but rather a common and part of the process. There are so many factors that influence a project that can cause issues. The age of the home, poor maintenance, code restrictions, unseen damage, differing opinions and desires, clarity of medical necessity, multiple family members, contractor issues, time lines, weather....the list can go on and on.

What Orville explained to me made sense and it struck a chord with my message during home modifications, we don't have problems what we have are situations, and situations are common. The only time we have problems is if we can't resolve the situation. You may or may not agree, but a simple change of terminology, can change a mindset. A change of mindset can change the way something is approached. Change the way something is approached and you can achieve the resolution. Achieve the resolution and improve the outcomes.

Thanks Orville!
