August 2014
The final full month of summer is upon us, and as we all prepare for the new school year, the pace is bound to pick up! Fortunately, Cranbrook has a full itinerary of unique programs and events lined up to keep your family engaged, enlightened, and entertained.
Cranbrook Institute of Science has just opened a new exhibition, and will offer a free learning event for families in early August. Guests can experience mid-century design at Cranbrook Art Museum the weekend of the Dream Cruise by joining in a scavenger hunt or taking a tour of the vault. And, if you haven't been to the gardens yet this year, they are at their peak, or plan now for a garden walk scheduled for this fall. As we move into the new school year, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cranbrook's Horizons-Upward Bound program. Stay tuned for upcoming events.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

Institute of Science Opens New Exhibition and Hosts Free Family Learning Event
The Institute of Science closes the summer with the debut of a new exhibition, and a free learning event for children courtesy of PNC bank. Visitors can explore the optics of the human eye and the physics of light in The Science of Sight, Light & Illusion, an exhibition created by Cranbrook. Interactive kiosks explore such topics as how the entertainment industry uses color and motion in filmmaking; the biology of the eye and the mechanics of how it works, and how humans perceive color including light, diffraction, reflection, refraction, and color tables. This exhibition is free with admission. PNC Bank partners with the Institute to present Learning is all Around Me, a FREE mobile learning adventure offering interactive kiosks, a photo opportunity, and giveaways including activity books, ready for school kits, and information for parents at the Institute of Science on August 10, 11 and 12 during regular hours. Experience Mid-Century Design at
Cranbrook Art Museum
Take a break during Dream Cruise and visit Cranbrook Art Museum for Drop-In Art Sunday, or a tour of the vault on August 17. Visitors will have a "Texture-iffic" time searching the galleries for texture in Paul Evans's furniture in this kid-friendly scavenger hunt. Afterwards, create a geometric design based on Evans's patterns and, using found materials, create rubbings to simulate the textures you found in Evans's work to infill your design. This event is free with admission from 2 to 4 pm. At
3 pm, enter the collections vault for an up-close-and-personal look at exemplary pieces of mid-century art and design not on view in the museum. In the Vault: Cranbrook at Mid-Century is $2 in addition to Museum admission and free to ArtMembers. Please call 248-645-3320 to make a tour reservation.

Horizons Upward Bound Program Marks Important Anniversary
As we approach the beginning of the new school year, we look forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Horizons-Upward Bound (HUB) program at Cranbrook. One of the oldest programs of its kind, HUB at Cranbrook is the largest of more than 800 programs in the nation, and the only one based at an independent school. It is also the most successful of its kind with more than seventy percent of Cranbrook HUB students graduating from college within six years of completing high school. Throughout the coming year we will be sharing stories about the history of the program and HUB alumni, and offering Cranbrook audiences the opportunity to join us at events celebrating this important program. Keep in touch with HUB events by visiting us online.
