FREE First Friday!

Courtesy of the MASCO Corporation Foundation, admission to Cranbrook Institute of Science is free after 5pm the first Friday of each month. Spend the evening at the bottom of the ocean in the Extreme Deep exhibition, or gaze beyond the stratosphere in the Observatory! Planetarium programs are offered at a small fee at 7, 8 and 9pm.

Greetings!

Shorter daylight hours and silent nights make it seem as if all of nature sleeps during the Winter season. But in reality science continues even in the cold. The wonder of Michigan's winters is the theme of our annual holiday programming. Nature walks will reveal the science of winter outdoors, and inside we'll look at the fossils, specimens and artifacts from our geological and anthropological past. Demonstrations, crafts, and a chance to experience Cranbrook's new wigwam are also on the agenda.

For those of you following Cranbrook's participation in the Department of Natural Resource's Salmon in the Classroom program, you'll be pleased to know that all of the eggs have hatched and the cold aquarium (a chilly 47 degree Fahrenheit) is now full of life. Stop by and observe the Chinook Salmon awaiting release next Spring.

The Institute of Science will be closed on December, 24, 25 and 31, 2012, and January 1, 2013

We wish you a very happy holiday season.

Go Science!

Discover the Beauty, Wonder and Science of Winter!

Nov. 23 & 24 * 1- 4pm
The marvels of the winter season are the subject of the Institute's annual free holiday activities December 26-30. Experiences both indoors and outdoors will reveal the science behind the coldest of seasons and the science at work while everything appears to hibernate. Indoors, explore the local evidence for an ice age climate by seeing and touching 14,000 year old ice age fossils from the Institute collections, including mastodon and mammoth bones, teeth and tusks from southeast Michigan and real mammoth hair from Siberia. How the people and animals living in the Arctic have adapted to their chilly environment will be demonstrated and visitors can try on, and make a pair of Snow Goggles to take home! Downstairs, in the Extreme Deep exhibition, observe our newly hatched Chinook Salmon as they await release into local rivers next Spring. Outdoors, gather around a cheerful fire in Cranbrook's newly relocated and rebuilt wigwam and study pelts and tools from the fur trade. Then, listen to traditional stories from the Native Peoples and Voyageurs and settlers of the Great Lakes that speak of the danger and beauty of winter in Michigan. Daily planetarium and Bat Zone programs also will be offered. Investigating Michigan's Winter activities will occur 1 to 4 p.m. and are free with admission. There is an additional charge for a bat or planetarium program. Preview planetarium programs here.

New Hours Offer More Access to the Institute's New Observatorye

Cranbrook Institute of Science now offers twice the opportunity to visit the observatory with extended hours every Friday and Saturday until 10pm. Three new telescopes, architectural upgrades in the viewing space, a new dome, and direct compatibility with the planetarium have created an entirely new observatory experience at Cranbrook. Starry Friday Nights are a long tradition at the Institute and we are excited to expand this opportunity to Saturdays. Planetarium programs also will be offered each Saturday night. The observatory is open every Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to 10 p.m., weather permitting, and the first Sunday of the month from 1 to 4 p.m. for safe viewing of the sun.

Discover the Mysteries of the Ocean Floor in EXTREME DEEP: Mission to the Abyss

extreme deep

Cranbrook Institute of Science take visitors to the ocean floor in its latest temporary exhibition EXTREME DEEP: Mission to the Abyss. EXTREME DEEP offers opportunities for hands-on exploration of the bottom of the sea. Newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, close-up views of deep-sea research submersibles, and shipwrecks, including the Titanic, are among the attractions in this deep-dive adventure.  Visitors will interact with the type of technology that has allowed travel to the ocean floor, learn about the work of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and experience the adventure of maritime exploration and discovery. Biology, chemistry, geology, history, exploration, and the critical role that deep water research technology plays in better understanding our world and its future, are highlighted.

EXTREME DEEP is free with admission and runs through May 26, 2013. EXTREME DEEP is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.
