Children Hold Backyard Carnival for COVE
| | |
This summer COVE Alliance friend Teri Feurer tried to enter the "carnival" her children had set up at their home. But no one gets in without a ticket! Teri's children enjoyed their free time this summer by setting up a carnival complete with food, games, and prizes. And all that work isn't free!
Each adult entrant paid for their carnival ticket. When it came to spending the $100 in proceeds made from the fun, the Feurer children discussed their options and chose to donate the amount to COVE Alliance.
Thank you, Feurer family, for your creativity and support! We can't wait to see what the next carnival brings! |

Continued Reflections from GlobeMed
| | |
Students from Princeton University's GlobeMed chapter may be back from their trip to Uganda, but they continue to reflect on the time spent their. Below is an essay from Jason, a Princeton University student that traveled to Uganda with GlobeMed this summer. Thank you Jason, for your support of the St. Jerome COVE Center! One cannot possibly overstate the integral role of the kitchen in daily life at St. Jerome COVE Center. The staff rises well before the sun, which does so consistently at 7 A.M. during these months of July, August, and September, to begin preparations. It seems they work throughout the day, always readying the next meal. There are pockets of time in the students' program each day devoted to reporting to the kitchen for nourishment. For example, at 10:30 A.M., one can see the children lining up to receive a serving of porridge. The next half-hour is marked by consumption and socializing before classes resume. Lunch and supper are delicious, nutritiously well-rounded meals consisting of a few local staple crops: beans, posho (cornmeal), and rice. Given that at least some students are on campus studying for most of the year, St. Jerome provide ample time for eating; this is just one element of their overall mission of generating healthy, responsible citizens.
When St. Jerome hosts guests such as our GlobeMed team, they hire a cook named Lydia to prepare all of their meals during the stay. In between working in the clinic and writing reports with my teammates, I have spent a good deal of time in the kitchen learning about the cuisine, popular music and getting to know the chefs themselves. Lydia and Anttansi, her young assistant, laugh as hard as they work in that kitchen. There is no lack of smiles when we're cooking. Almost every day I picked up another few culinary terms in Luganda from the others, who only seldom laughed at my pronunciation. It has been interesting observing the similarities and differences between the local, American and Jamaican cultures, particularly in the realm of food and of musical expression. My time in the kitchen has shed light on another dimension of life in the region, an aspect quite different from that provided by the health unit or family visits.
- Jason, GlobeMed Princeton
