Disease Prevention Initiated at the COVE Campus

Safe male circumcision program

This is a program initiated by the ministry of health as a preventive measure of HIV/AIDS. We partnered with the ministry to do the safe male circumcision. A physician from Nakaseke hospital performed the procedures at the St. Jerome COVE Health unit for 2 weeks in December. This included clients from Kapeeka Sub-county and the neighboring communities. We had 109 Clients of which 30 were adults and 79 clients were children between 13 and 18 years. There is also a plan of doing the exercise this month for one week.

Handwashing Station

Construction has begun on the washing station.
Handwashing with soap and water is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrheal and upper respiratory infections, which takes the lives of millions of children in developing countries every year. Together, these diseases are responsible for the majority of all child deaths. Turning hand washing into an ingrained habit, before eating and after using the toilet, could save more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention, cutting deaths from diarrhea by almost half and acute respiratory infections by one quarter. A vast change in handwashing behavior is critical to meeting the Millennium Development Goal of reducing deaths among children under the age of 5 by 2/3 by 2015.

Miria - Graduate Success Story

Miria in 2007

Miria was a shy 13 year old when COVE Alliance first met her in 2007. Miria was boarding at Kifampa school as a 5th grade student. When she was not at school she lived with her sister and cousin in the village of Balatira. Like most children when they first meet a muzungu, a white person, she was a little reserved.

Miria in 2013
By the time we met her on our second visit to Uganda in 2009 she was no longer afraid of us. Each time we returned to Uganda we were thrilled to see her become more and more self assured.

Recently Miria wrote to her sponsor "I have learned to be a responsible person and I promise you that I will work hard with the knowledge that I have acquired."
