You have a lot on your plate. We will direct your attention to some of the most important findings in Veterinary Dermatology from the past year.

Vet Derm Clinical Update:
Estradiol Induced Alopecia
Five dogs with non-inflammatory diffuse alopecia were examined. Two cases lived in separate households while the other three shared a home. Alopecia in all 5 dogs developed gradually between seven months and several years. Serum biochemical and complete blood cell counts were normal in all five dogs. One dog had increased serum estradiol concentration. All dogs that had thyroid and adrenal function tests performed had normal values. Skin biopsies were done on all dogs. Hair follicles from most samples were either in telogen stage or atrophic; a few were normal and revealed follicles in the anagen phase.

Common to the history of all dogs was the use of a transdermal estradiol containing gel by the owners. All dogs were also allowed to sleep in bed with their owners. Alopecia resolved after cessation or minimizing estradiol exposure.

This report revealed an important history item that should be considered in dogs with non-inflammatory alopecia.
