Annual Rural Heritage Festival

Cherokee Strip Museum Banner The Cherokee Strip Museum will host its annual Rural Heritage Festival on Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a variety of reenactors depicting early Oklahoma life such as fur trappers, settlers, and cowboys. Other demonstrations will include quilting, lye soap-making, basket weaving and lace making. Guests can enjoy cobbler and stew cooked the old fashioned way by Dutch oven cooks. There will be cake walks, apple bobbing, sack races and more! Guests are encouraged to bring their best carved pumpkin, as there will be a pumpkin carving contest! This is a free fun event the entire family can enjoy. Museum admission will be free that day. For more information call (580) 336-2405.
Dutch Oven Cooking Class

Join the Oklahoma History Center on Saturday, October 10, to explore Dutch oven cooking in a hands-on participation class for teens and adults. The class is designed to introduce participants to Dutch oven cooking. Learn a variety of recipes as you create a dish and discover how to use a Dutch oven in your backyard. The cost for the class is $15 and all necessary materials will be provided. The class is from 1 to 5 p.m. Space is limited to forty people so sign up early!

The class will begin inside the museum for background information, instructions on how to care for and clean Dutch ovens, recipes, and different cooking methods. The majority of the class will be spent outdoors preparing a group meal. Please remember to dress for the weather and no open-toed shoes or sandals. Research Day for National History Day Students

The Oklahoma History Center is pleased to announce that it will host a research day for students interested in participating in the National History Day (NHD) competition. This event will be held on Thursday, October 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chambers Library on the University of Central Oklahoma campus and is free for teachers and students. Attendees will have full access to the library resources, librarians and the Oklahoma National History Day (OKNHD) staff. Registration is required and must be submitted to OKNHD Coordinator Sarah Dumas at [email protected].
 
Oklahoma National History Day is part of NHD and is a highly regarded academic program for 6th through 12th grade students. It allows teachers the chance to incorporate an academic program that directly addresses Oklahoma Assessment Standards for the social studies with student-based projects. The next state OKNHD contest is scheduled for May 4-5, 2016, at the Oklahoma History Center. Junior Division will compete on Wednesday, May 4, and Senior Division will compete on Thursday, May 5. National History Day is a nonprofit education organization in College Park, Md. Established in 1974 NHD offers year-long academic programs that engage more than half a million middle and high school students around the world annually in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. These research-based projects are entered into contests at the local and affiliate levels, where the top student projects have the opportunity to advance to the national contest at the University of Maryland at College Park.
