Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Live!

The Oklahoma History Center is proud to announce that it will be a participating museum in the annual Museum Day Live! sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine.  Museum Day Live! is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian Magazine in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket... for free.  The Oklahoma History Center is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

 

Tickets are available by going to http://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday and visiting the Ticket Information page.  Fill out the form and you will be emailed instructions on downloading your ticket.  The Museum Day Live! ticket is good for two people per household, per address.  If you go to the museum with more than one guest, the other guests will have to pay full admission.

 

This offer is only good for participating museums.  The list of museums may be found on the Find a Museum page at Smithsonian.com.

OHS Annual Membership Appreciation Event
Music of the Dust Bowl

The Oklahoma Historical Society, with the help of the Oklahoma City Repertory Theatre (CityRep) and Oklahoma City University, will present "Music of the Dust Bowl." Performers will include Monica Taylor, Dr. Harold Aldridge, and Shelby Eicher's band. The event is free for OHS members. Non-members may purchase a membership by calling 405.522.5202 to receive two reservations for this concert.

 

The concert will be held at the Oklahoma History Center. The doors will open at 5:45 p.m. and the concert will start at 6:30 p.m. To RSVP and/or buy memberships for the concert contact Nicole Harvey at 405.522.5202 or  nharvey@okhistory.org. 

 

The concert will feature Monica Taylor performing southern gospel from the 1930s and 1940s, such as Oklahoman Albert Brumley's "I'll Fly Away." Also, Harold Aldridge will play regional Blues music from that era, and Shelby Eicher and his band will play Bob Wills' music, which was prevalent in Oklahoma as KVOO broadcasts could be heard statewide at the time. In between the music will be readings from actors involved in the CityRep/OCU stage production of The Grapes of Wrath.

 

Both the play and the concert are official parts of the National Steinbeck Center's 75th anniversary of The Grapes of Wrath.

Mountain Plains Regional Conference of the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums

The Mountain Plains Regional Conference of the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) will take place October 9-11, 2014, in Tahlequah, Okla. The George M. Murrell Home in Park Hill will be the host institution for the event, and the theme is "Interpreting Our Multicultural Past."

 

The regional conference will feature hands-on workshops, field trips and classroom sessions. On Thursday, October 9, six workshops will be held between the Murrell Home, Fort Gibson Historic Site and the Cherokee Heritage Center. That night, an opening reception will be held at the Murrell Home. On Friday, October 10, more than a dozen classroom presentations will be offered at the Armory Municipal Center in downtown Tahlequah. Friday evening a hog fry will be held at the Cherokee Heritage Center. On Saturday, October 11, conference attendees will travel by bus to the Pawnee Bill Ranch for tours and living history demonstrations. The conference will end Saturday night with a banquet in the barracks building at Fort Gibson.

 

ALHFAM is an international organization of history and museum professionals, reenactors, farmers, volunteers and those interested in living history. Anyone interested in historic skills and trades, preservation or research is invited to attend. The conference is sponsored by the Oklahoma Historical Society, Cherokee Nation Cultural Tourism, Friends of the Murrell Home, and Friends of Fort Gibson. For the complete program and to register for the conference, visit www.alhfam.org and click on "Conferences."  For more information on the event, contact the Murrell Home at 918-456-2751 or murrellhome@okhistory.org.
