May Day Celebration and Lawn Social
Saturday, May 3 from 12 p.m to 4 p.m.
George M. Murrell Home| Park Hill, OK

The George M. Murrell Home May Day Celebration and Lawn Social on Saturday, May 3, from 12 to 4 p.m. will evoke the beauty and color of Park Hill during its golden age in the 1850s. Living historians in period dress will mix with the public in a social function reminiscent of the social galas held at the Murrell Home. The public is encouraged to bring picnic lunches and quilts and join the reenactors between 12 and 1 p.m. for a picnic on the lawn. From 1 to 4 p.m. activities will abound, including dance lessons, lawn games and croquet and horseshoe tournaments. A maypole will close the event and commemorate the start of the growing season on the plantation. Admission to the May Day Celebration and Lawn Social is free.

 

The Murrell Home is the only remaining antebellum plantation home in modern-day Oklahoma. It is located at 19479 E. Murrell Home Rd. in Park Hill, and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact the Murrell Home at 918-456-2751 or [email protected].

 

Ladies Victorian Lavender Tea and Brunch
Saturday, May 9 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center| Enid, OK

Reservations are now underway for the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center's Ladies Victorian Lavender Tea & Brunch.  It is the perfect gift idea for Mother's Day.  The tea will be held on the beautiful grounds of Humphrey Heritage Village from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9.  Ladies will enjoy a delightful quiche lunch while being entertained with the finer points of Victorian etiquette.  Reservations are $30 and seating is limited.  Those attending are encouraged to wear their prettiest purple.

2014 Oklahoma History Conference Recap

The 2014 Oklahoma History Conference was held this past week on April 23, 24, and 25 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.  The event was a wonderful success beginning with a reception in honor of the late Dr. Leroy Fischer, engaging presentations on Thursday and Friday, and a wonderful concert Thursday evening featuring the Red Dirt Rangers and Byron Berline, with Monica Taylor, Harold Aldridge, and Bonita Franklin.  The conference came to an end on Friday, with the Annual Awards Luncheon.

Four individuals were the 2014 inductees into the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame. The honorees were Kenny Brown, Edmond; Loretta Y. Jackson, Chickasha; Linda W. Reese, Norman; and Mary Jane Warde, Stillwater.

  

Other awards given at the Conference are as follows: Payne County Historical Society (Outstanding Local Historical Organization), Sheerar Museum of Stillwater (Outstanding Local Historical Museum), Savanah Conrady, Sierra Conrady, and Lauren Cox (Joseph B. Thoburn Student Historian Award) for dramatization titled "Facing the Storm: Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher's Fight for Equal Education," Dr. Richard Lowitt (Muriel H. Wright Award) for "The Enigma of Mike Monroney" article published in the Chronicles of OklahomaPenny Heath from Canton High School (William D. Pennington Teacher Award), Alyce Vigil from the University of Central Oklahoma (Outstanding Masters Degree Award) for thesis titled "The Big Break: Race and Gender in Pawnee Bill's Historic Wild West, 1888-1913," Natalie Panther of Oklahoma State University (Outstanding Ph.D. Award) for her dissertation titled '"To Make us Independent': The Education of Young Men at the Cherokee Male Seminary, 1851-1910," and Linda W. Reese (Outstanding Book on an Oklahoma Topic) for her book titled Trail Sisters: Freedwomen in Indian Territory, 1850-1890 published by Texas Tech University Press.
