OHC Volunteer Field Trip Fun!
By Abigail Jones, Volunteer Coordinator
Oklahoma History Center |
The museum volunteers boot-scooted on down to the Chisholm Trail Museum in Kingfisher in March where Adam Lynn and his staff greeted us with smiling faces. The volunteers thoroughly enjoyed the special Victorian exhibit and a tour of Governor Seay's Mansion. Many of our former military volunteers particularly enjoyed the museum's Pearl Harbor documentary, which focused on an Oklahoma veteran describing his experience during World War II. We take several trips throughout the year to museums and sites around the state to gain a better understanding of Oklahoma's culture and heritage.
For more information about our volunteer program, please contact Abigail Jones at 405/ 522-5886 or by email at [email protected].

Beginning Cherokee Pottery
Saturday, April 20, 2013, 10:00 AM
Oklahoma History Center
Oklahoma City, OK |
The History Center will host a beginning Cherokee pottery class with Victoria Mitchell, Cherokee potter and Cherokee National Living Treasure, on April 20, 2013. The class will run from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM and registration is required. The cost for the class is $100.00 and includes all materials and lunch.
Class registration pays for all materials necessary to produce a traditional Cherokee coiled vessel. Class size is limited to just 12 participants to allow one-on-one instruction with the instructor. Victoria will demonstrate techniques including Cherokee stamping design and discuss southeastern style traditional pottery. Each student will complete a coil vessel and decorate it with tools provided. You may leave your finished piece at the museum to be fired and picked up at a later date, or you may transport it to dry and make arrangements to fire the piece on your own.
You can find out more about Victoria Mitchell by visiting her website: www.victoriacherokeepottery.com.
