OHS presents Oklahoma @ the Movies book just in time for the holidays
The second in the Oklahoma Historical Society's Popular Culture Series, Oklahoma @ the Movies gives readers an intimate, insider's view of the Sooner State's impact on Hollywood over the motion picture industry's hundred-year history. This is a lively and entertaining story-the story of Sooner State stardom!
In nineteen information-packed articles, some surprising facts emerge in a fascinating narrative. Thomas Edison's company filmed the very first Western cowboy movies on Oklahoma ranches, including the fabled 101 Ranch. Several movie icons in front of the camera including Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd), Joan Crawford, Ron Howard, Will Sampson, Brad Pitt, and Jennifer Jones hailed from Oklahoma.
In Oklahoma @ the Movies you will learn about Will Rogers's humorous movies; Gene Autry, singing cowboys, and music writers from Oklahoma; and the careers of rising stars including Kristin Chenoweth, Alfre Woodard, and Wes Studi. An eye-opening article reveals how American Indian actors, writers, and producers from Oklahoma masterminded a complete transformation in the way Americans see Indians on the screen. There's even an actor's-eye view, penned by a screenwriter for the movie Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective and a bit player in Vigilante Blood, both shot in Tulsa.
Oklahoma men and women behind the scenes make great movies greater: Gray Frederickson produced The Godfather; Lucien Ballard, an Academy Award-winning cinematographer and inventor, shot dozens of classic films including the original True Grit; and S. E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders, filmed in Oklahoma under the direction of Francis Ford Coppola.
The book Oklahoma @ the Movies coordinates with a major exhibit launched in 2012 at the Oklahoma History Center. Both exhibit and book establish a new understanding of the Sooner State's place in the movies, truly an important American popular culture genre.
Lushly illustrated with photos from the collections of OHS as well as views of the Oklahoma @ the Movies exhibit, the book also uses personal photos and movie stills provided by Oklahoma movie stars, producers, directors, and special effects experts.
Oklahoma @ the Movies is available in the OHS Museum Store. For more information or to order, email giftshop@okhistory.org or call 405/522-5214. |
Reigns Supreme: The Little Black Dress
Opens Thursday, December 20, 2012
Oklahoma History Center
Oklahoma City, OK
The Oklahoma History Center is featuring a new exhibit from the Textiles Collection titled "Reigns Supreme: The Little Black Dress." This special exhibit opens to the public Thursday Dec. 20, 2012.
With the introduction of the little black dress by Coco Chanel in 1926, women have turned to this fashion staple ever since. Simple, elegant, timeless, and classic are all terms that sum up the little black dress and its role in fashion history.
Drawing from the fashion collection of the Oklahoma Historical Society, this exhibit will showcase over thirty examples of the little black dress.
Homage will be given to Audrey Hepburn for her role as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's, directed by Blake Edwards of Tulsa. An additional feature of this exhibit will focus on the Stork Club which was founded in New York by native Oklahoman Sherman Billingsley.
For more information, contact Jill Holt, Curator of Textiles, at (405) 522-0794 or by email at jholt@okhistory.org |
