Murrell Home Ghost StoriesGeorge M. Murrell Home
Friday, 26 October 2012, 6:30 PM
George M. Murrell Home
Park Hill, OK

For the 20th consecutive year, the George M. Murrell Home in Park Hill will be the backdrop for storytellers spinning yarns about the "Hunter's Ghost" and other chilling accounts.

"The innovative, family-oriented program will feature various storytellers in a number of rooms telling tales about the Murrell house, the Cherokee country, and other ghost stories," said David Fowler, who manages the historic site for the Oklahoma Historical Society. "The ghost stories are one of our most popular events of the year."

The Murrell Home, a plantation built in 1845, is one of the oldest structures in Oklahoma. Ghost stories related to the home are documented as early as the 1930s. One story, the "Hunter's Ghost," is the legend that grew out of the years George Murrell operated the mansion as his "Hunter's Home" before the Civil War. He often hosted fox hunts in the Cherokee Nation. This and other tales related to the home will be revived by storytellers in period costume. Sessions are every 15 minutes from 6:30-8:30 p.m., with visitors moving through the house to listen to stories from five storytellers.

Guests will have a chance to explore the smokehouse, normally closed to visitors, and sample some hot cider and cookies provided by the Friends of the Murrell Home support organization.  A donation of $5 per person is requested, with reservations required because of limited seating. Credit cards are accepted. The event is not recommended for children under 8. For reservations call (918)456-2751.

SHPO ACCEPTING AWARD NOMINATIONS

The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), Oklahoma Historical Society is now accepting nominations for its 2013 awards program. Know someone who rehabilitated an important historic building in your community?  Protects an important archeological site located on their property? Worked with a dedicated group of volunteers to save an endangered historic landmark?  Developed a walking tour for a historic district?  These and many more projects and activities contribute to the preservation of Oklahoma's heritage.  Help the SHPO recognize the many preservation success stories across the state by nominating worthy individuals, agencies, firms, or organizations from your community.

The SHPO's awards program includes the Shirk Memorial Award for Historic Preservation and the SHPO's Citation of Merit.  The deadline for nominations is 5:00pm, Friday, December 7th, and candidates will be notified in February 2013 about the results of the selection process.  The awards will be presented at the banquet during Oklahoma's 25th Annual Statewide Preservation Conference in Perry (June 5-7, 2013).

The Shirk Memorial Award for Historic Preservation is presented for historic preservation programs or activities that have had statewide impact.  The SHPO's Citation of Merit is awarded for noteworthy accomplishments in historic preservation at the state or local level.

The SHPO will accept nominations in either electronic or hard copy format.  To request nomination forms and instructions, contact Betty Harris at 405/521-6249 or bharris@okhistory.org.  Or, obtain the information from the SHPO's website.

If you have questions about the awards criteria, contact Melvena Heisch at 405/522-4484 or mheisch@okhistory.org.

Oklahoma History Patrons Society Established

The Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Historical Society has approved the establishment of the Oklahoma History Patrons Society to recognize individuals, companies, organizations, and foundations for their total cash contributions to the Oklahoma Historical Society over time. The list will continue to evolve each year as new donors meet the qualifications to be listed and as existing donors make new contributions.

All donors who reach $10,000 or more in total contributions are eligible for membership. This includes contributions to the OHS, to the Oklahoma History Center, to the Friends of the Oklahoma History Center, or to the Friends of the Archives. The members of the Patron Society will be listed annually in Mistletoe Leaves and in OHS EXTRA!, and other means of expressing appreciation to OHPS members will be explored.

Below are the members of the OHPS as of September 20, 2012. We are grateful to have received the support of each of these donors.
