With the Royals' World Series Championship, a baseball quote seemed in order.
"Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good, too."

NLBMDA Honors MLA Member with Chairman's Award
| |
|
The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) was pleased to honor two of its members for their contributions to the association and the lumber and building materials industry during the NLBMDA Installation Dinner event on Wednesday, October 28, in conjunction with the ProDealer Industry Summit held in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 2014-2015 NLBMDA Chairman JD Saunders selected Woodie Acord, of Acord's Home Center in Arkansas, and John Somerville, President and CEO of Lumbermen's Merchandising Corporation, for this honor. Acord started his business in downtown Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in 1979 and served on the Mid-America Lumbermen's Association (MLA) Board of Directors for many years, serving as President in 2000. After that, he transitioned to NLBMDA representative for MLA, and then served as an At-Large Director for NLBMDA. "During his tenure on the NLBMDA board, Woodie's thoughtful contributions to many conversations and decisions were always softly submitted for consideration but with great weight and clarity," states Saunders.

Distracted Driving Continues to be Much More Than Just a "Problem"
| |
|
Not only is distracted driving still a serious problem, it is an epidemic. With each new mobile device introduced, the potential for behind-the-wheel distractions increase and so does a business's exposure to risk. Federated Insurance is very concerned about the persistence of this issue and how it can adversely affect your business. Worse yet is what you may stand to lose as a result of distracted driving.
Federated Insurance has rejuvenated efforts to help owners address distracted driving. Our new risk management program asks, "What Is Important to You?" It provides a sample mobile-device policy, reminder posters, and employee training materials, including a thought-provoking video and educational handout. It also presents information on technology solutions, which can aid in restricting mobile device use in vehicles. Read more.

Future of Softwood Industry Unclear After Expiration of Softwood Lumber Agreement... The Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA), between the United States and Canada, first agreed upon in 2006, expired in October, after having agreed to a two-year extension in 2012. The SLA represents the agreement for Canadian exports of softwood sawnwood to the U.S. with the current trade agreement from 2006 representing a solution to U.S. industry claims that Canadian forest policies subsidize sawnwood production.
ProSales has reported that "governments on both sides have now reached a standstill as the U.S. government believes that the deal is now outdated, while according to the U.S. Lumber Coalition, the Canadians have not yet been willing to negotiate." However, a standstill provision in the 2006 agreement gives the U.S. and Canada a year to come to a new agreement before the United States could bring any type of trade actions against the Canadian suppliers. Reported by the newspaper, Vancouver Sun, the Canadian industry would like to see the current agreement renewed, while U.S. sawmills are reported to oppose a renewal. If Canadian sawmills will have to pay new higher duties on exports to the U.S., it is likely to affect trade flows to other markets including China.

Documentation for Termination
| |
|

Question: One of my staff went almost seven whole days without clocking in or out on our web-based time card system. She said it was her computer but it mysteriously started working the day after my accounting person pointed it out to her. We've been unhappy with her work performance and reliability (late almost every day). I want to start documenting for when we do let her go so there is no recourse for her to file. Her supervisor wants to try to avoid paying unemployment, if that is even possible. Read more.
