Senate May Revisit Marketplace Fairness Act
| |
|

Senate leaders are working on a short-term extension of the Internet Tax Freedom Act that may give them the time needed to reach a deal in merging that bill with the Marketplace Fairness Act. The Internet Tax Freedom Act bans states from levying taxes on Internet access but it expires on November 1. By extending the ban through the end of 2014, supporters of the Marketplace Fairness Act hope it will give negotiators more time to reach an agreement that would combine both bills into a single piece of legislation.
The Marketplace Fairness Act would give states the authority to collect sales tax from out-of-state online retailers. Last year, the Senate passed the Marketplace Fairness Act but the House of Representatives has yet to take action. If the Senate does successfully approve a bill combining the Internet Tax Freedom Act and the Marketplace Fairness Act this year, it would likely force the House of Representatives to vote on the issue before the end of the year.
