Conversations
 | | Fading Ads of Philadelphia, book cover |
Hand-painted, outdoor advertisements are a thing of the past, but their faded ghost-images can still be seen on building facades throughout Philadelphia. Join us for Conversations: Fading Ads of Philadelphia, where author and graphic designer Lawrence O'Toole will explore the fascinating history of Philadelphia's outdoor signage and advertising from the 1800s to the 1960s.
Located in such communities as Fishtown, Kensington, Manayunk, Northern Liberties, and West Philadelphia, these ads tell the story of our city's changing neighborhoods, industries, and ways of life. Unfortunately, if these important artifacts are not preserved soon, they will be lost forever. Lawrence O'Toole is the author of the book Fading Ads of Philadelphia, published by History Press in 2012.

 | | Beer Ephemera on view in Made in Philadelphia, Craft Brewing: It's a Beer Revolution exhibit |
June 8, 2:00-5:00 p.m, Breweriana, Collecting Beer Memorabilia and Colonial Beer Demonstration
Beer drinkers have long enjoyed collecting just about everything with a brewery name or brand on it -- what we call breweriana today. Held in conjunction with Philly Beer Week 2013, the Museum presents Conversations: Breweriana, Collecting Beer Memorabilia.
Noted local collectors Larry Handy and Dale Van Wieren will talk about this fascinating hobby, how it started, why they do it and how you can, too. Learn about the history of beer-related objects and what makes certain items rare and valuable.
The discussion will be followed by a live colonial beer-making demonstration in the Museum's Marian Mitchell Garden by beer historian Rich Wagner. Wagner will show how beer was made in the 18th century by using the same kinds of hops, barley, and wooden tools used to brew beer in Philadelphia 250 years ago. This Conversation's program is held in conjunction with the exhibition, Made in Philadelphia, Craft Brewing: It's a Beer Revolution, on view at the Museum through July, 2013.

In 1780, "hanging around town" implied an entirely different afternoon than it does today.
 | | Gibbet c. 1780, Philadelphia History Museum Collection |
If you saw a gibbet - pronounced "jib-et" - hanging around in the 1780s, you were looking at a human-shaped "cage" that more often than not held a gruesome sight. In Philadelphia convicted pirates were sentenced to death by hanging and their tarred bodies displayed in a gibbet. Friends in high places and a last minute reprieve saved pirate Thomas Wilkinson from that fate, but not before his gibbet was complete.
There are thousands of stories to be told from the Museum's expansive collection of over 100,000 artifacts. To learn more about the gibbet and other ordinary and extraordinary objects, click here.
