A lesson in space planning

What exactly is space planning? There are a few fancy definitions but for simplicity sake, it is how the furnishings, electronics, plants, etc. are arranged in a space.

Who needs space planning? Everyone does if you are going to furnish a room. Many people do not have a good spatial sense and don't know what size sofa or bed will best fit in a room. Often people buy furniture that is too large for their space or they buy too much furniture for a space and don't quite understand why their room doesn't look good. In some cases, the furniture is the right scale but it simply is not arranged well within the room.

All of the problems can be avoided by hiring a designer for an hour or two. A designer can create a space plan that provides the dimensions of the furnishings as well as the layout once they are purchased. It will generally save you money and frustration because you will purchase furniture, electronics or art that is the correct scale for your space.

You can also hire a designer for a consult if you continuously bang your knee on the corner of your bed. Of course you might hear something you don't want to hear like "this king size bed is really too big for your space."

We are all a bunch of winos

If you have ever dropped off your bottles at a recycling center then you have seen the mounds of wine bottles in the recycle pile (at least if you live in California, the land of wine).

One company decided to do something with those used wine bottles.
Refresh Glass makes those discarded bottles into usable item such as drinking glasses, vases and candle holders. If you want that unique gift for that wine lover then check them out.

Wine bottles aren't the only object that can be remade into objects or works of art. Ryan Sorrell uses the foil from wine bottles to make beautiful mosaic art.

Slay some vampires Part II

Too busy to turn off all those electricity sucking electronics. No fear Belkin, the vampire slayer is here. The Conserve Socket can be set for automatic shut off to reduce "vampire standby power."

Eco-Cycling

If you have ever done any home improvement projects you likely have some old paint stored in your garage or shed. And the day comes when you want to clean out that garage or shed and get rid of that paint. We know that we can't just toss it in the trash.

Paintcare directs you to locate a paint retailer that will take the old paint off your hands. Many are conveniently located around town. There are at least 6 locations within 10 miles of my home. So happy these paint stores will accept my donations as it will save me a trip to the Material recovery center aka "the dump."

We will be moving to a different provider for this monthly newsletter. If you do not receive an email next month, you may wish to check your Spam folder to see if it was directed there.

Sincerely,
