Summer Vacation & Cool August Nights

I am back after some well-deserved vacation. I had the good fortune to be traveling for most of July. My first journey was back home to visit my family back in Nebraska. I spent a relaxing 4th at my cousin's cabin on the river. I used to go there as a child and it brings back so many memories. This year, I got to make new memories.

My most memorable trip was visiting the rain forest in Puerto Rico. That was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was so lushly beautiful that it brought me to tears. I have a much better understanding of the importance or rain forests in our eco-system and hope that we all continue to make changes in our life to help curb the unnatural climate changes.

Now that I am back home in California, I am definitely enjoying the cool August nights and low humidity. Traveling to humid places always makes me appreciate Northern California all the more. Where else can you have beautiful warm days and cool breezy nights?

Do You Know What You Are Sleeping With?

You spend approximately one-third of your life in your bed. Your bed should be a place of comfort, a safe haven and yet, you probably have no idea what you are sleeping with.

If you are sleeping on sheets made from polyester fabric; sheets that are labeled "wrinkle free" or "easy care cotton"; or brightly colored or logo type sheets (the kind that your children want for their bedroom) then you may have a lot of very unwelcome company in your bed. This unwelcome company may include chemicals such as formaldehyde, dioxins, petro-chemicals, and heavy metals such as alum, chromium, copper, iron or tin.

Do you really want to share one-third of your life with these bedfellows? If not, then think about investing in organic cotton, wool, or linen sheets that are free of dyes, finish free or untreated (no chemicals used in processing), and grown without any pesticides or chemicals. It will be one of the best investments you can make for your health and your life.

Detox Your Life

There is still plenty of summer left to enjoy here in California. I love to sit outside especially in the evening right about the time the bugs seem to wake up from their afternoon nap. I abhor the sound of a bug zapper and I don't like putting toxic sprays on my body. So what to do? Grow some plants. Here is a list of plants that are known mosquito deterrents:

- Rosemary

- Catnip

- Marigolds

- Lemongrass

- Mint

Green Giving - Sell Stuff and Do Good

Chances are you have donated some of your unwanted items to a variety of charities. Now you can give to charities of your choice by selling your items instead of just donating them. The new start-up, Gift It, allows you to post an item for sale and determine how much of the proceeds should go to your charity. For local giving, click on Sacto.
