This is the Year I Will Get Organized
We start each New Year full of energy, full of ideas and full of promises. We look around our home and think I need to get rid of stuff, get organized, and simplify my life. For some of us, that is where it stops. We think about it and think about it but never really START it. That is probably why January is "Get Organized" month according to the
National Association of Professional Organizers.
I know that ridding myself of stuff I don't need or use is the sustainable, common sense choice. I have made great strides in some rooms. Last summer I reorganized my kitchen so that the stuff I use every day like my pots and pans are in easy reach and the stuff I don't use often is in the cabinets that are not so user friendly. I recycled some plastic containers I had and replaced them with glass. I also overhauled my master bath so that I only have items I use and all my products are neatly organized in baskets that are easily accessible.
However, I have been promising myself to organize my garage for almost two years now and while I have made progress in clearing things out, it could hardly be said to be organized. But I have incentive this year. Currently my dining room table is overrun with up-cycled home accessory projects in various stages. I want to create a workshop out in my garage where I can make my home accessories and not have to worry about cleaning everything up all the time. In order to create the workshop I must clear out and organize.
What I have learned is that if I take one small step at a time I can get organized. If I plan to organize just one drawer instead of the whole bank of drawers, I find it manageable. I also try to get rid of three things a day. Mostly I recycle them but I may toss a thing or two. When I open the refrigerator, a drawer or a closet I check to see if there is something I can eliminate from my life. Today I pulled three books off the shelf. They went in the library donation pile.
If you find it difficult to organize your home and think you could benefit from some assistance. Check your area for local organizers or the National site listed above.
