Visitor E-news November 2014
Greetings,

As the Boothbay Harbor Region moves in to the Holiday season, things at the Chamber are just as busy as ever. We are excited to welcome a new Executive Director, Tony Cameron, who came on board in mid-October.  A Brunswick native, Tony served as the Executive Director of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce and prior to that he was the Membership and Marketing Director for nearly five years at the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

The much-anticipated Early Bird Sale starts bright and early tomorrow morning with great deals and discounts for the savvy shopper. Many of the merchants in our region will be offering some great bargains, and the earlier you shop, the better the deals. Shoppers who show up in their pajamas will often get extra discounts!

The young and young at heart always look forward to the arrival of Santa Claus, who makes a grand entrance by boat during the Harbor Lights Festival, which comes to town on Saturday, December 6th. This fun family festival features the spectacular Festival of Trees, lap time with Santa, caroling, a lighted boat parade, craft show, horse and wagon rides, and so much more. Be sure to bring the family for this festive kick-off to the holidays.

Throughout November and December, there are lots of other events going on, including steam train rides on the North Pole Express, the Great Gingerbread Spectacular, art and craft shows, and more.

We hope that you will consider a visit in the next couple of months to share in the festive holiday spirit of the Boothbay Harbor Region!

Warm wishes,

The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce Staff

North Pole Express

Saturday November 29, December 13 and 20, 2014, Boothbay Railway Village

On Saturdays, November 29, December 13 & 20, the Boothbay Railway Village will be running the "North Pole Express!" Departures will be at 11:00, 11:45, 12:30, 1:15 and 2:00 each day. We highly recommend ordering tickets online to avoid disappointment or long waits. A new option for this season is to upgrade your ticket to First Class and enjoy the Victorian splendor of the newly restored Franklin & Megantic Coach No. 2. The coach was originally built in 1903 and it embodies the typical travel of the era with its plush walkover seats and mahogany interior. The train will carry you through the Village and arrive at the North Pole (Thorndike Station) where a special guest wearing a red suit with a jolly belly will jump aboard to greet you! Yes, Santa himself will attend! After meeting the "big guy" in person the train will whisk you back to the station where you will be invited to join us in the 1847 Boothbay Town Hall for more festivities. Inside guests will be treated to a special story book reading while hot chocolate and homemade cookies are served. New this year will be a G-scale model of the Museum's own locomotive and a holiday themed layout under the Village's Christmas tree. Children will also be invited to make a vintage-inspired holiday ornament to take home. Tickets are available in advance through www.railwayvillage.org or at the door. Standard tickets are $15, First Class $20 for attendees three years and older. Museum members receive a $4 discount per ticket only on Standard tickets, sorry no discounts on First Class.

The Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District invites the community to join them at the Boothbay Region Elementary School for a Community Supper on December 2nd. Superintendent Eileen King has chosen the day to coincide with #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back, as part of a collaboration with a group of local nonprofits called Boothbay Treasures. This community supper will celebrate the work of our nonprofits and will highlight healthy school lunches that are prepared and served daily to our students in the Boothbay Region. The school cafeteria staff, led by Darlene French, will be showcasing a menu of chicken casserole, American chopped suey, macaroni and cheese, a baked potato bar and sliced roast turkey with homemade yeast rolls, salad, cookies, water, coffee, tea, and milk. Please join the school and Boothbay Treasures to kick off the season of giving on #GivingTuesday. Dinner is free and voluntary donations for the dinner will benefit the school lunch program and the nonprofit organizations in attendance. To find out more on the #BoothbayTreasures initiative, visit 'Boothbay Treasures' on Facebook or on boothbayregister.com. This December 2nd we encourage you to celebrate the National Day of Giving, #GivingTuesday, by giving back to a local nonprofit. Literary Luncheon withDr. Joan MacCracken

Friday, December 12, 2014, 11:45 a.m., Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library

What does an older woman do when she finds herself alone in her later years? Will she live by herself for the rest of her life? Will she look for another husband or partner, or move in with her children? In a newly released novel, written by Joan MacCracken, MD, we first find Elizabeth Sloan alone after the sudden death of her husband. She decides to fulfill her dream of living year round in a small, coastal town in Maine, and after considering the long dark, winter nights and the inefficiency of heating her large home for just one person, hatches a plan: she will invite three other older women to move in with her for the winter. Dr. Joan MacCracken believes that a new 21st Century women's movement is emerging now. All across the country single older women are beginning to consider their next phase of living style. Using her book, The Winter House, as a backdrop, the author will present some of the demographics facing seniors in our communities. Please register early as space is limited.  For more information, call the library at 633-3112 . Cost is $10 for lunch.
