Visitor E-news October 2014, volume 1
Greetings,

It has been a glorious fall here in the Boothbay Harbor Region. The foliage has been spectacular and the fall displays of pumpkins and mums around town have made things fun and festive.

Even though the summer season is winding down, there are any number of events coming up in the next couple of months that are definitely worth checking out. Take a  haunted train and hay ride (if you dare), visit fall festivals that celebrate pumpkins, foliage and more, indulge in farm-to-table harvest dinners, check out the creative costumes at a local Halloween parade...the possibilities are endless!

If you are going to be in the greater Portland area in a couple of weeks for Harvest on the Harbor, be sure to cheer on our local chefs as they compete to be named as the Maine Lobster Chef of the Year. There are three chefs from the Boothbay Harbor Region who are vying for the title: Executive Chef Dwayne Whitelocke from the Rocktide Inn, Executive Chef Stephen Richards  from The World is Mine Oyster, and Executive Chef Margaret McLellan from Water's Edge Banquet Center in Edgecomb. We all have our fingers crossed that one of our three local chefs will triumph over the other seven competitors and take the title of Maine Lobster Chef of the Year!

The staff is already looking ahead to the next summer season and is hard at work on the 2015 Boothbay Harbor Region Guide. If you have any favorite photos from your time here in the Boothbay Harbor Region and wouldn't mid sharing them in the Guide, please send them along to us at seamaine@boothbayharbor.com .

The Boothbay Harbor Region is a great place to visit no matter what the season! We hope that your travels will take you to the Boothbay Harbor Region this fall, and we will look forward to welcoming you!

Warm wishes,

The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce Staff

Coming Up...

- A few of the events happening in the next few weeks -
Andrea Peters: Four Seasons
Thursday, September 4-Tuesday, October 14, 2014, Gleason Fine Art, 31 Townsend Avenue,
Boothbay Harbor

The East Boothbay artist is the veteran of many shows at the gallery. Her bold, brushy landscapes mark her as one of the gallery's most recognizable artists. Peters is a keen observer of the landscape around her. From her cove in East Boothbay, she paints the views surrounding her home in each season: her flower gardens, the shore's edge, and her beloved spruce trees. Peters's paintings are composed for maximum expression. "I push beyond the obvious," Peters say. When she does so, she creates a seismic shift in the way we see the landscape. The result is a visual extravaganza. The public is most cordially invited to share a glass of wine with Andrea and discuss her remarkable paintings on September 12 from 5:00-7:00. For more information, call the gallery at 207-633-6849, email the gallery at info@gleasonfineart.com, and check out Andrea Peters's show, and the gallery's entire inventory, at www.gleasonfineart.com.

Unsuspecting visitors must enter the haunted station to board the Ghost Train, if they dare. Witches and other monsters will assist the engineer and train crew with departures every 30 minutes, the last leaves the station at 7:30 PM. A hayride to parts uncharted is up next. Perhaps you'll encounter a coven of witches brewing up a potion. You never know what's around the next bend! Your adventure ends with a Monster Mash party and games in the Town Hall. A spooky snack and revolting refreshment will be included too. Tickets will be available inside the Museum Store when you arrive to the event. The Opera House Presents Gaelic Storm

Saturday, October 11, 2014, 8:00 p.m., the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

After 10 albums, and nearly 3,000 live shows, Gaelic Storm, the multi-national Celtic band, has just dished up their latest album, "Full Irish." This greatest-hits album spans the bulk of the band's career from 2004-2014, mixing crowd favorites and concert staples with three previously unreleased recordings. The band will have copies for sale at the show. Gaelic Storm has blurred the line between tradition and innovation for nearly two decades. Led by founding members Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger, the group infuses traditional Celtic music with modern influences, updating the genre for a new generation of fans raised on rock, country and folk. "Full Irish" pays tribute to the group's diverse journey. The album features sea shanties and drinking songs, traditional tunes and originals, instrumental workouts and vocal showcases. Together, these 15 songs celebrate the sunny side of life, urging listeners to raise their pint glass and stomp their feet. Gaelic Storm routinely sells out venues so purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are on sale through the Opera House box office: $30/advance tickets, $35 at the door (if available).

October Artist of the Month: Debbie Casterlin

Debbie Casterlin has been capturing moments in time with a paintbrush for as long as she can remember. Though she uses nearly all-artistic mediums, acrylic painting is her favorite. Its quick drying time is well suited to her lifestyle of farming and owning multiple pets. Debbie produces her work instinctively using her brush to paint what she sees and feels. Despite a lack of formal art education, this approach has been successful for her. She has been custom painting for people for the past 32 years after receiving her first order request at 14 years old. She has been in several juried shows and has had solo shows as well, winning numerous awards. Debbie also illustrated an award-winning book. She shows and sells her paintings and photographs at Greater Brunswick Physical Therapy in Brunswick, Maine, where she works as a physical therapist. Her experiences of farming, living with Chronic Lyme Disease, and parenting a child with a serious medical condition have influenced her work, giving her a heightened awareness of the preciousness of life, a greater appreciation of beauty, and a sense of urgency to share this with others. Her goal as an artist is to reveal and permanently capture moments in time that she and others feel are significant, beautiful or memorable and she hopes to continue to create images for as long as she lives.

Literary Luncheon with Brian Daniels - "Thoughts of an Average Joe"

Friday, October 10, 2014. 11:45 a.m., Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library

In 2009, author Brian Daniels created Joe Wright-a clueless, middle-aged, thick-around-the-middle man hopelessly stuck in the twentieth century. "Thoughts of an Average Joe" is the hilarious rambling of a man whose commentaries voice the confusion and angst of a simple, old dude trying to make sense of life in the modern world. In this book, Joe offers his thoughts about the many issues that confuse or annoy him: "I'm Not Ready for the Wireless World," "Poachers Are Not Hunters," and "I'm Comfortable in My Old Skin," are just a few examples. He, like many men, struggles to understand his "little woman" and others of her gender in several essays, including "I'm Afraid of the Little Woman," and "I've Noticed That Women Are Not Like Men." You'll meet Joe, Smalltown (his beloved northern New England hometown), his fascinating friends and family members, Dan's Market, Small-Mart, Blake's Esso Station, and the Smalltown News. He hopes his stories will bring a smile to your face and warm your heart. Maybe you'll even agree with most of his Thoughts. If not, he'll be quick to tell you . . . well . . . you are just wrong. To register for this October luncheon, come to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. Cost is $10. For more information, call the library at 633-3112 or email Barb House at barbh@bmpl.lib.me.us

Debbie Casterlin is the library's October Artist of the Month. During this evening program on Monday, October 20, she would like to share a bit of her history of being an artist and the stories behind each of the paintings in the show. Her paintings are reflections of what she loves and the story of her life. Debbie plans to let people see her present work in progress and will describe her artistic process as well. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. For more information and to register, call 633-3112 or email Barb at barbh@bmpl.lib.me.us.
