Visitor E-news September 2014, volume 1
Greetings,

The local kids are back in school and there is definitely a touch of fall coolness in the air. The Chamber staff is getting ready for the Claw Down
Third Annual Chefs' Lobster Bite Competition. 18 chefs are putting together their best bites featuring fresh Maine lobster for a chance to be named as the winner in the Judges' and People's choice categories. The winners will then travel to Portland's Harvest on the Harbor to represent our region in the much-anticipated Lobster Chef of the Year competition. There are still a few tickets to the Claw Down available, so if you love lobster, come vote for your favorite bite and enjoy lobster in some truly unique and inspired ways.

We have received word that work will be done on the Southport bridge starting in September through November. According to an article in The Boothbay Register, "Beginning around Sept. 15 and ending some time in November, Route 27 over Southport Bridge will be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic during weekdays, Monday through Friday. Wide loads, greater than 10 feet, will only be able to cross the bridge on weekends during this time. The bridge will still open to allow marine traffic to pass.

The Southport Bridge will be completely closed to both automobile and marine traffic from 9:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 1, Oct. 16 and Oct. 31. If there is a need for emergency vehicles to cross the bridge during the three overnight closures, they will be allowed to do so." Click here to read the entire article.

We hope to see you in the Boothbay Harbor Region this fall. The pleasant days and changing foliage make the autumn months a great time to visit!

Warm wishes,

Coming Up...

- A few of the events happening in the next few weeks -
Andrea Peters: Four Seasons
Thursday, September 4-Tuesday, October 14, 2014, Gleason Fine Art, 31 Townsend Avenue,
Boothbay Harbor

The East Boothbay artist is the veteran of many shows at the gallery. Her bold, brushy landscapes mark her as one of the gallery's most recognizable artists. Peters is a keen observer of the landscape around her. From her cove in East Boothbay, she paints the views surrounding her home in each season: her flower gardens, the shore's edge, and her beloved spruce trees. Peters's paintings are composed for maximum expression. "I push beyond the obvious," Peters say. When she does so, she creates a seismic shift in the way we see the landscape. The result is a visual extravaganza. The public is most cordially invited to share a glass of wine with Andrea and discuss her remarkable paintings on September 12 from 5:00-7:00. For more information, call the gallery at 207-633-6849, email the gallery at info@gleasonfineart.com, and check out Andrea Peters's show, and the gallery's entire inventory, at www.gleasonfineart.com.

Shelter II: Emotional Landscapes
Art by Lynne Seitzer on display at Joy to the Wind Gallery
September 2014, 34 Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor
Artist Lynne Seitzer has completed 12 luminous paintings titled "Shelter II; Emotional Landscapes." These new works are a continued exploration of her original Shelter series. The paintings depict a sense of vast expansiveness. They accomplish this by exaggerating the scale of earth to sky. There is a simplicity to the compositions and yet the paint application creates wonderful complexities. The vague scenes feel familiar; like rhythms held in ones memory they strike a harmonious chord in the viewer's eye."Shelter II" will be on view at Joy To The Wind Gallery for the month of September.

The Opera House Presents John Doyle with Nuala Kennedy and Eamon O'Leary touring as The Alt

Friday, September 19, 2014, 7:30 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

John Doyle, long considered one of the most important guitarists in Irish and acoustic music worldwide, is now increasingly lauded for his singing and songwriting talents. On Friday, September 19, this celebrated musician, joined by the talented Nuala Kennedy and Eamon O'Leary, touring as The Alt, will perform at the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor. John Doyle will be joined on stage by the internationally renowned musicians Nuala Kennedy and Eamon O'Leary. Kennedy is an Irish singer and flute player with hauntingly beautiful vocals, adventurous instrumentation, and an imaginative mix of influences. Eamon O'Leary, the third member of this remarkable trio, on their inaugural tour, started playing Irish music while growing up in Dublin through his friendship with the Mayock family, traditional musicians from County Mayo. Advance purchase tickets are $20. Tickets purchased on the day of the performance are $25.

The Opera House Presents Suzy Bogguss

Saturday, October 4, 2014, 7:30 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

Suzy Bogguss is one of country music's most pristine and evocative vocalists. With the release of her 1989 album, Somewhere Between, Suzy quickly became one of the key artists that defined '90s country. She scored a string of Top 10 singles with country radio staples including "Outbound Plane," "Drive South," "Hey Cinderella," Letting Go," and "Aces" and her 1991 album of that name went platinum. Along the way she minted 3 gold albums and sold more than 3 million records. Her most recent album, released in February 2014, is considered "remarkable in its freshness. Its acoustic-based arrangements, while sparse, crackle with vibrancy. Each song is driven by the perfect marriage of Suzy's delicate voice and the adventurous, yet tasteful, playing of the band. "Advance purchase tickets are $25. Tickets purchased on the day of the concert are $30.

At the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library

Artist of the Month: Mary Lou Newstead Mary Lou Newstead has been quilting in some way or another for the past forty years.  Her passion  began while making a large patch work skirt in college, and the craft quickly  turned into much more. After seeing a quilt Newstead made for her first son; her grandmother gave her a box of unused quilt squares from the 1930s. These turned into a quilt for her second child. The quilting became a passion; a way to tell a story. In times where most quilts are made with new fabrics and sewn by a machine; Newstead continues to hand sew quilts with squares from old quilts and vintage fabrics. Newstead says the hand quilting connects her to the women who created the original squares, and lets her spend time with her creation. She gives many quilts away to her friends and family. er quilts will be displayed at the library for the month of September. The library is open until at least 4 o'clock Tuesdays - Saturdays, so feel free to stop by to see Mary Lou's work! If you have any questions, you can always call the library at 633-3112.

Andrew Alden Ensemble presents Buster Keaton at the Harbor Theatre

Thursday, October 2-Friday, October 3, 2014, 7:00 p.m., The Harbor Theatre

Some of the funniest Silent Buster Keaton comedies ever made will be accompanied live by the Andrew Alden Ensemble, a contemporary and electronic chamber music group from Boston, MA. Included in the film line up, Keaton's first independent film, "One Week" (1922) in which two newlyweds, (Buster Keaton and Sybil Seely), receive a build-it-yourself house as a wedding gift. The house can be built, supposedly, in "one week". A rejected suitor secretly re-numbers packing crates. The movie recounts Keaton's struggle to assemble the incorrectly numbered parts. The Andrew Alden Ensemble brings together a fascinating collaboration of rock music and contemporary classical composition including percussion, synthesizer, piano, violin, viola and electronic production. Their music combines the influence of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, David Lang, Radiohead, Velvet Underground and Krzysvtof Penderecki to create a beautiful and haunting sound. Andrew Alden Ensemble presents Buster Keaton at the Harbor Theatre Thursday 10/2 and Friday 10/3 at 7:00pm. Tickets $10. (Adults) $8.00 (Seniors/Children) at the door.
