Old-timers know that the Auction is a haven for bargain hunters and flea market aficionados. They all come to make a deal on items large (boats, cars and furniture) at the live auction, and small (toys, tools and kitchenware) at the flea market. In the past few years, a boutique of gently-used treasures and collectibles, the famous "Tool Tent" and a silent auction of merchants' donations and gift certificates have added to the fun and helped turn the auction into the largest, most all-encompassing charity event of its kind held annually in the region. All the action takes place on August 2 at the Boothbay Common, rain or shine! The flea market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. The silent auction will be open from 9 a.m. to noon, and the live auction will begin at 10 a.m. and run until noon or when everything is sold. As always, the best part about the Rotary Charity Auction and Flea Market is that all proceeds go to support Rotary charities, including the Student Aid Fund and scholarships, the Home Heating Oil Fund and the Food Pantry, local elementary and high schools, Camp Knickerbocker and Y-Arts, Boy and Girl Scouts, and much, much more. BBC Documentaries on WWI at the Lincoln Theater
Monday, August, 4, 11, and 17, 7:00 p.m., The Lincoln Theater
To honor and remember the centenary of "the war to end all wars," Lincoln Theater is pleased to present three BBC documentaries, never before seen in the US, and offered free to the public on Mondays in August.
"37 Days"playing Monday August 4 at 7 PM, commemorates the 100th anniversary of WWI with a BBC miniseries about the various political, military and especially diplomatic machinations that took place in the title time between the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and Germany's declaration of war.
"Royal Cousins at War"playing Monday August 11 at 7 PM, notes that, at the outbreak of the First World War, three cousins reigned over Europe's greatest powers - Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and King George V of England. This documentary looks at the role played by the three monarchs, and their relationships with each other, in the outbreak of war, arguing that it is far greater than historians have traditionally believed.
"Churchill's First World War" playing Monday August 17 at 7 PM, finds us again at the outbreak of war, where Britain's First Lord of the Admiralty, 39-year-old Winston Churchill, dreams of winning fame and glory. But when the disastrous Battle of Gallipoli leads to his disgrace and eventual resignation, he dreams of redemption, instead. See how political intrigue, ambition, and remarkable military adventures combine with the love of a wise woman to forge Britain's future great champion of World War II.
Lincoln Theater is located at 2 Theater Street in downtown Damariscotta. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis, with the doors opening at 6:30 PM. Additional information can be found on the theater's website at www.atthelincoln.org

Funny, irreverently reverent, thoughtful, compassionate, passionate, Stookey's vocal sound is known all across this land: from the "Wedding Song" to "In These Times." The Opera House Presents Jeffery Broussard & The Creole Cowboys Wednesday, August 6, 2014, 7:30 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor One of the most influential accordionists and vocalists in modern Zydeco music, Jeffery Broussard continues to be one of the genre's most dynamic performers. He has continually been an innovator, beginning his career with traditional Creole Zydeco music playing drums in his father's band, Delton Broussard & The Lawtell Playboys, then moving on to develop the nouveau Zydeco sound in Zydeco Force, now returning to the more traditional Zydeco sound with his own band, Jeffery Broussard and The Creole Cowboys. "Mr. Broussard and his Cowboys are fabulous. You start moving in your seat as soon as their rhythmic, rich melodies, both joyous and mournful, flood the theater," says the New York Times. Jeffery Broussard & The Creole Cowboys come to Boothbay Harbor thanks to generous sponsorship support from the Knickerbocker Group. Tickets are specially priced for this evening of hot Louisiana music and are $18 in advance. If purchased on the day of the performance tickets are $23. The Opera House Presents Ben Taylor Thursday, August 7, 2014, 7:30 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor Musician Ben Taylor is the son of folk icons James Taylor and Carly Simon. Even with those genes, he had a hard time finding his own way. But that changed when he came out with his critically acclaimed debut album Famous Among the Barns. His most recent album release is Listening. Listening is Ben Taylor's first album in 4 years, the last being the critically acclaimed The Legend of Kung Folk Part 1, which had CNN commenting that the album, "reflects the broad palette of pop" and Blurt Magazine declaring, "For some time now Ben's been busy carving out a unique niche for himself in the music world." Ben himself once described his work as "organically handcrafted songs," and given the painstaking thought and care he puts in to his art, who can argue? Listening, flawlessly fuses the sounds and styles of folk, pop, soul, urban, reggae and country. Tickets for Ben Taylor's performance are $15 in advance and $20 if purchased on the day of the concert. Call the Box Office at 207.633.5159 for tickets or visit www.boothbayoperahouse.com

July Artist of the Month: Kevin Lyon
Kevin Lyon's interest in photography started when he was a young boy living in Auburn, Maine. He and his family lived on Goff Hill which afforded them a "bird's eye" view of the twin cities and all the activity therein. When there was a fire, his mom, dad and he would hop in the car to chase the fire trucks and then take photos of the blaze when they arrived on the scene. His love for photography grew and changed with the shift in technology, which he embraced. Today, Kevin makes his home in Livermore Falls. He works in the Emergency Department at CMMC in Lewiston, but still finds time to pursue his passion for photography, continually shooting subjects that he finds interesting. His website is http://www.lyonsdenphotography.com/. Feel free to drop in to see Kevin's works anytime during the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library's business hours of Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:00 to 4:30, Wednesday from 10:00 to 7:00 and on Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00. For more information, call the library at 633-3112.
