An update on fireworks: We just heard from the Town Manager, who says: Central Maine Pyrotechnics, along with Fire Chief Nick Upham and Town Manager Thomas Woodin regret to inform you that due to an inclement weather forecast on July 4th and projected wind concerns on the rain date of July 5th  as a result of Hurricane Arthur passing by off shore, that this week's  fireworks have been postponed.  A reschedule date is TBD.  We apologize for the inconvenience. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and webssite for more info.

Michael J. The captain and a crew member perished in the accident but the Coast Guard performed harrowing helicopter rescues to save the other fourteen sailors. Tougias will use slides of the storm, the survivors, and the rescue to make this "an edge-of-your seat" visual program. This event is sponsored by the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. Those interested in being part of this historic event should bring their own skipping rocks (we suggest at least seven), and - all important - a "rock-skipping moniker/name." You can't skip without it, and you might not like the one we make up for you. Keep it "rocky." The divisions are: girls 12 and under; boys 12 and under; adult women and adult men, 13 and up. Suggested donations: $5 for adults and $1 for kids 12 and under.

The Opera House Presents Paula Poundstone

Saturday, July 18, 2014, 7:30 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

Twenty-five years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country -- stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went.  A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR's popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me.  She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany with the Boston Globe to write: "Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy."  Audience members may put it a little less elegantly:  "I peed my pants." While there is no doubt that Poundstone is funny, the thing that probably separates her from the pack of comics working today and that has made her a legend among comics and audiences alike is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd.  Poundstone says:  "No two shows I do are the same." Advance tickets $30, day of show $40.

Ants in Your Plants
Thursday, July 10, 2014, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

Ants are the little things that run the world, and are very important to the ecology of plants. Botanic gardens have a variety of native and exotic plants, both of which provide opportunities for learning about interactions between ants and plants. Yet we know little of the distribution of ants or the range of ecological interactions between ants and the wide range of plants grown in botanic gardens. Join two of the authors of the new Field Guide to the Ants of New England, Aaron Ellison and Elizabeth Farnsworth, for a morning of learning about ants in the cultivated and wild sections of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. We'll explore the variety of plants and begin to uncover the diversity of ants in the Gardens. We will also learn how to catch ants using just our hands or with specialized equipment, and how to quickly identify both plants and ants in the field using only a hand lens. $35/members, $42/non-members

Registration is required for these events; call 207.633.4333, ext. 101, or visit www.mainegardens.org

57th Annual Boothbay Rotary Auction and Flea Market

Saturday, August 2, 2014, 8:00 a.m., Boothbay Common

The Rotary Club's charity Auction has been an integral part of the Boothbay region summer scene for 57 years. Old-timers know that the Auction is a haven for bargain hunters and flea market aficionados. They all come to make a deal on items large (boats, cars and furniture) at the live auction, and small (toys, tools and kitchenware) at the flea market. In the past few years, a boutique of gently-used treasures and collectibles, the famous "Tool Tent" and a silent auction of merchants' donations and gift certificates have added to the fun and helped turn the auction into the largest, most all-encompassing charity event of its kind held annually in the region. All the action takes place on August 2 at the Boothbay Common, rain or shine! The flea market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. The silent auction will be open from 9 a.m. to noon, and the live auction will begin at 10 a.m. and run until noon or when everything is sold. As always, the best part about the Rotary Charity Auction and Flea Market is that all proceeds go to support Rotary charities, including the Student Aid Fund and scholarships, the Home Heating Oil Fund and the Food Pantry, local elementary and high schools, Camp Knickerbocker and Y-Arts, Boy and Girl Scouts, and much, much more. The Rotary Club is still accepting donations for the auction at this time. If you have items you would like to donate, please contact Auction Chairman Henry Wyatt at 502-542-9219 to schedule a free pick up.

Sunday, August 24, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., Barrett's Park, Boothbay Harbor

In celebration of the Town of Boothbay's 250th Anniversary join local historian and attorney Chip Griffin on a history walk and talk. The moderate hike will take participants from Barretts Park to the Giles Farm, located not far from BRLT's Appalachee Preserve and just off the old Indian Trail to Bayville. Besides seeing something of Boothbay's agrarian past, this walk will stop at Echo Lake, one of the region's classic ice ponds that figured prominently in Boothbay's early 20th century economy. Much of the territory to be covered also played a role in Boothbay's first murder! For more information, or to register for the event, contact the BRLT office at 207.633.4818.
