Visitor E-news June 2014
Greetings,

The Boothbay Harbor Region is gearing up for the 52nd Annual Windjammer Days Festival, which is only a few short days away! This year, the festival is being produced by the Friends of Windjammer Days and the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce.  The Friends of Windjammer Days, a new 501 (c) 3 non-profit group is bringing back many favorite activities while adding some new ideas to the festival this year. With the new 501c3 status, The Friends of Windjammer Days, will be able to take advantage of grant opportunities and tax deductible contributions.

The Boothbay Harbor One Design Races and Windjammer Days Golf Tournament start the festivities on Sunday, June 22nd. The Pirates of the Dark Rose are returning to plunder and pillage and recruit scurvy knaves of all ages to join their crew to fight off an attack by the British. The Antique Boat parade will grace the harbor on Tuesday, and the ever-popular Parade of Sail and Street Parade return on Wednesday. It is worth noting that the Parade of Sail and Street Parade are both an  hour earlier than they have been in previous years. The Parade of Sail will start at 1:00 p.m. and the Street Parade will kick off at 4:00 p.m.

New events this year include a lobster eating contest, oyster shucking context, and a cod fish relay race. Another new feature will be food booths, which will be set up by local restaurants and will offer festival goers a chance to grab a quick bite to eat around town. Also new this year is an artists reception on Monday, June 23rd at the Greenleaf Inn, which is a fundraiser for the Community Fireworks Fund and the Friends of Windjammer Days.

It isn't summer in Maine without the amazing fireworks displays over the harbor during Windjammer Days and the Fourth of July. The fireworks over the harbor are truly a community effort and are funded by a combination of town funds and individual donations. For a truly spectacular display, everyone will need to pitch in and help out, and it isn't too late to donate! This year, donations can be dropped off at the Boothbay Harbor Town Office (11 Howard Street). Checks or money orders should be made payable to: Town of Boothbay Harbor with "Community Fireworks" written on the memo line. Donations can also be dropped off at any number of donation cans around town. Cans can be found at the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, The Smiling Cow, Gimbel's Country Store, The Indian Trading Post, Sherman's Book & Stationery, Irving, Downeast Ice Cream, T&D Variety, Orne's Candy Store and other locations around town.

We hope that you will be able to join us to celebrate our maritime heritage and take part in this fun local festival!

Warm wishes,

Catherine Wygant Fossett

From the National Press Club in Washington, DC to the Maine State Legislature, and from countless grange halls to unforgettable bean suppers, Maine humorist Tim Sample has made a career of introducing the nation and the world to the lifestyles and stories of Maine. On Thursday, June 26, in celebration of Windjammer Week, Boothbay Harbor's historic Opera House welcomes back "Maine's humorist laureate." Doors for seating open at 7 pm, Tim Sample goes on stage at 7:30. Advance tickets $20, day of show $25.

The Opera House Presents The Mallett Brothers Band

Friday, June 27, 2014, 8:00 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

The Maine-raised, nationally touring Mallett Brothers Band have been described as "slightly more rock than country," and theirs is a musical melting pot that's influenced equally by folk and singer/songwriter influences as by harder rock, punk and even psychedelic sounds. On Friday, June 27 this fast-rising band comes to the Opera House stage in Boothbay Harbor for a special Windjammer Week Festival performance. The band is known for its song-driven music that holds up under the lens of solitary listening, but that's equally apt to crank a room full of rockers into high gear. This late June concert is made possible thanks to generous sponsorship from Boothbay Harbor's J. Edward Knight Insurance Co. Discounted advance purchase tickets are $15, tickets purchased on the day of the concert are $20.

The Opera House Presents Cave Dogs

Wednesday, July 2, 2014, 7:30 p.m., Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

Just before Boothbay Harbor's fireworks illuminate the sky, the talented troupe Cave Dogs will transform the Opera House into a puppet and shadow cave as the show Sure-Minded Uncertainties brings its magic to the historic stage. Under the direction of Jim Fossett, Cave Dogs performances consist of innovative, large-scale shadow projections cast onto a screen from sculptures, props, costumes, and the human body. Cast shadows move in concert with projected video imagery, spoken narrative, and an original soundtrack. Tickets for the performance are$12 for adults and $8 for students in advance and $15 for all if purchased on the day of the show.

Call the Box Office at 207.633.5159 for tickets or visit www.boothbayoperahouse.com

In celebration of the Town of Boothbay's 250th Anniversary join local historian and attorney Chip Griffin on a history walk and talk. The moderate hike will take participants from Barretts Park to the Giles Farm, located not far from BRLT's Appalachee Preserve and just off the old Indian Trail to Bayville. Besides seeing something of Boothbay's agrarian past, this walk will stop at Echo Lake, one of the region's classic ice ponds that figured prominently in Boothbay's early 20th century economy. Much of the territory to be covered also played a role in Boothbay's first murder! For more information, or to register for the event, contact the BRLT office at 207.633.4818.
