Spring is a great time to visit the Boothbay Harbor Region!
|
|
Greetings,
Everyone looks forward to Memorial Day Weekend. This unofficial start of summer signals the beginning of glorious warm weather, summer barbecues, visits to the beach, and so much more. It is the beginning of endless summer possibilities here in the Boothbay Harbor Region, including special events, festivals, concerts, art shows, sailing, boating, golf...the list is long, and it is all waiting for you here in the Boothbay Harbor Region! The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Michelle Davis has joined the Chamber as the new Visitor & Member Relations Coordinator. She brings to this position over 25 years of professional experience including owning her own travel agency and working with The First, NA. She has a wide breadth of experience and local knowledge which will allow her to make the perfect match with our visitors and our members. She has also been a longtime volunteer with the chamber helping with Windjammer Days, Harbor Lights and more! Michelle is looking forward to meeting our members and welcoming our visitors to the region this summer! The Chamber is also pleased to announce that our 2014 Downtown and Region Maps have arrived. These maps are a great companion piece to our guidebook and are ready to be picked up for the 2014 season. Last summer, the Boothbay Region pulled together to raise the money to bring the popular travel show "Getting Away Together" to our area. With the money raised, the community was able to welcome not only the production crew but a group of excited women who got to experience everything that the Boothbay Harbor Region has to offer. After much anticipation, the finished show will air for the first time on July 3rd. If you want to know more about when and where it will be shown, click here to read a letter from Audrey Miller from Cottage Connection, who was instrumental in bringing this show to our community. We are about a month away from the 52nd Annual Windjammer Days Festival. Organized this year by The Friends of Windjammer Days, the festival promises to bring back some classic favorites (such as the street parade, parade of sail, concerts, and the antique boat parade) and add some new events, including a lobster eating contest, food booths, and cod fish races. For a complete schedule of events and for more information on the event, visit the new Windjammer Days website: www.windjammerdays.org.As we get set to kick off the summer season, we hope that your summer plans will include a visit to our area. No matter whether you plan to visit for a day, a weekend, a week, or a season, we look forward to welcoming you!
Warm wishes,
Catherine Wygant Fossett
Executive Director

Share Your Signature Story Sawyer's Way - Jeff and Jen Dowdy
|
 | | William E. Sawyer known to most as Captain Billy Sawyer in front of his ships chandlery and salvage store in Boothbay Harbor Maine. He and his father William M. Sawyer were recycle/repurpose guys back when things were made well, not made to be used a short time and then disposed of. |
Our name, Sawyer's Way, comes from my great grandfather William Billy Sawyer who like his father before him was a maritime salvager in Boothbay Harbor, Maine during the late 19th century and early part of the 20th century. There was a local saying about any vessel that showed up ready to be scrapped, it was said to be "Leaning Toward Sawyers."
Sawyer's Way is located in Edgecomb on the road to Boothbay Harbor. We sell a unique blend of antiques, cottage furniture & accessories of old coastal Maine.
Back in the 1970's I got my start in antiques at the age of eleven when I began collecting military regalia. My mom took me to yard sales and helped me run ads in the local papers to find the items I was interested in. Soon the helmets, swords and uniforms were piling up. By age twelve I had turned my passion into a summer job when I rented tables at Foster's flea market in Newcastle where the auction house now stands. My sales career in antiques had begun.
Antiques, salvage and repurposing are somewhat of a family tradition. My ancestors, the Sawyers', settled in East Boothbay in 1830 right in the middle of a busy ship building community. My great great grandfather, William Melvin Sawyer, like his father before him traded spice in the West Indies as a master of his own vessels. Toward the latter part of the 1800's, while watching a growing number of derelict ships and boats pile up along the coast, he realized there was a great deal of money to be made in salvage.
Setting up shop in Boothbay Harbor on the wharf where the Tugboat Inn now sits, he began purchasing and salvaging ships. He salvaged so many ships in fact that when a vessel was towed into the harbor, listing and ready to scrapped, the locals used to say "there's another one leaning toward Sawyers".
At his wharf they were stripped of everything that could possibly be re-used or re-purposed. Then the hulls were towed around the horn to the head of Mill Cove where they were set on fire and burned down to the ribs. At low tide a crew salvaged the metal fittings from the mud flats. Nothing of use was wasted. Eventually William's son, Billy Sawyer, took over the business and ran it until his death in 1941.
Fast forward to today. I don't salvage ships but I do salvage and rescue antique furniture and objects from local barns, attics and cottages. Previous to opening Sawyer's Way I had a wholesale business designing and manufacturing painted/distressed cottage furniture. My entire client base consisted of interior designers and decorators. When the opportunity to open Sawyer's Way presented itself I decided to create a venue for designers, decorators and individuals alike who are interested in using cottage furniture and antiques to capture the essence of old coastal Maine.
Anyone who likes eclectic design will enjoy a trip to Sawyer's Way. Items are displayed in a fashion that allows the shopper to envision how they can be used in their own space. My wife and I try to maintain a range of antiques from the late 1800's to about 1950. Some items are sold as is. In the onsite wood shop I repurpose other items into useful furniture. A steamer trunk becomes a wine bar. A Victorian sled becomes a table and on and on.
Come see us this season and experience Sawyer's Way where we give old things new life. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
