With the holiday season and the new year fast approaching, it is time to take a look back on some of the highlights from 2013:
  • For the second year in a row, the Chamber has grown by 10% and has welcomed 38 new members in 2013.

A film crew captured the beauty of the Boothbay Harbor Region as a group of ladies vacationed here as part of the television show Getting Away Together. Look for the Boothbay episode to air on PBS affiliate stations  in January of 2014!
What will the New Year bring? We will have to wait and see, but in the mean time, we wish you all a very happy holiday season and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2014!

The Seasons

A Suite of Paintings by John Vander 

Nov. 14-Dec. 24, 2013, Gold/Smith Gallery,  41 Commercial St., Boothbay Harbor

Gold/Smith Gallery is featuring new paintings by John Vander. The suite of work is called "The Seasons". The works are spontaneous mixed media improvisations on designs from Vander's notebooks. They are an attempt to capture seasonal changes of light, weather and atmosphere. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturdays through Christmas. An annual showcase of some of the finest, stand-out talent in the area, this year's collection of unique, hand-crafted, original works of fine art, sculpture, & fine crafts, will be joined by local authors on hand for book signings. Come support the arts, culture, and commerce at our local level - complete with complimentary edibles & beverages. Art in the Square Show and Sale  

Boothbay Region Art Foundation, 1 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor

Hours are 11-5 Fridays and Saturdays, Sunday open 12-5 through Jan 5th.  

Every week new paintings arrive and go up on the gallery walls. The community of artists and art collectors share in this special event and everyone who takes part can feel the goodness of sharing in this mission to reach others with fine art. $25 from each $100 painting sold goes directly into the Student art and Scholarship fund. The 2013 Art In The Square Holiday Show and Sale, now in it's eighth year, really wraps up the year in the true spirit of Holiday giving.  Come join the fun and celebrate art!  Boothbay Region Art Foundation is at 1 Townsend Ave, Boothbay Harbor. FMI Call 633-2703.


Yule Log Hike
Friday, December 20, 2013, 10:00-11:30 a.m., Penny Lake Preserve
Celebrate the upcoming Winter Solstice at Penny Lake Preserve while gathering natural items for a Yule Log. Then head to the BRLT office to create your own Yule Log! The Yule Log has long been a tradition tied to the winter solstice. Since this is the darkest time of the year, the burning of the log represents the sun and celebrates the day getting longer after the solstice. The log also brings good luck to the household. North Pole Express
Saturday, December 21, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Boothbay Railway Village
This entertaining train ride will consist of a comfortable seat in a steam-heated train with free cookies and hot chocolate. The train will carry you through the Village and is scheduled to depart about every 45 minutes. Also included in this Christmas train ride, the last of 2013, will be story telling and a visit from Santa Claus himself. Admission for this event will be $10.00, $8.00 for current members, however those under two years old will be free of charge. Tickets are available online.  By purchasing your tickets early you will be able to choose the train time of your choice and arrive prior to its departure and avoid any wait for the next train.

Elf Fun Run 5K and 1K Jingle Walk

Donations gladly accepted to help underwrite the travel costs for the Y-ARTS youth to travel to and perform in Atlanta, GA in January 2014. Call the Y at (207) 633-2855 for more information.

Victorian Christmas
Saturday, December 21, 2013, 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum

Start your visit at Sheepscot Station to get your free tickets for train and horse drawn sleigh rides. The weather forecast looks good for sleigh rides which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A wagon will be available if all this snow disappears. Be on the train at Sheepscot by 2 p.m. to make connection with the sleigh. All trains will stop at Alna Center for passengers young and old to visit with Santa. Warm yourself by the bonfire at Alna Center while waiting for a sleigh ride or to talk with Santa. Enjoy light refreshments and our holiday decorations. Hardy souls may want to dress warmly and bring a warm blanket and ride in the open car. Coach cars and a caboose will also be available. Sheepscot Station is located at 97 Cross Road, Alna. Directions: from Wiscasset Village take Route 218 north 4.5 miles to the Cross Road in Alna; take a left onto the Cross Road; Sheepscot Station is at the bottom of the hill on the right. Community Potluck and Carol Sing

Wednesday, December 18, 2013, 5:30 p.m., Opera House at Boothbay Harbor 

The community comes together for one last time amidst the stunning decorations that define the Opera House during the holiday season. On this night, tucked in below trees and wreaths, friends and neighbors are invited to bring a dish to share (and a plate and utensils for themselves), while sharing stories and warming up for the community carol sing. The doors for the potluck open at 5:30 pm, with dinner from 5:30-6:30 pm, followed by music provided by Kevin Kiley, John Adams, Matthew Ryder, Abbey Hutchins and friends. Beer and wine available for sale.


Hot Tuna Acoustic

Sunday, January 5, 2014, 7:30 p.,m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor
Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and mandolin virtuoso Barry Mitterhoff kick off the 2014 season at the Opera House. These guys are as good as it gets and have set the standard for decades. We welcome them back to the Opera House stage tonight. Show begins at 7:30pm. Advance tickets $30, day of show $35.

April Verch and Band

Friday, January 10, 2014, 7:30 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

April Verch and her band always delight. Hailing from the Ottawa Valley in Canada, she brings her fiddle, her voice and her dance to the stage tonight, backed up by her band. This is a night of incredible energy and sheer joy on stage and the perfect cure for cabin fever. The show begins at 7:30pm. Doors for seating open at 7:00pm. Advance tickets are $15. Day of show tickets are $20.

One thing the Maine State Library offers is for you to take out eBooks just like regular books. If you'd like to learn more about this, come to a free workshop at the library Meadow Mall location. Two sessions are planned, at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, with a limit of four people per session. Literary Luncheon: E. B. White on Dogs with Martha White:

In E. B. White on Dogs, White's granddaughter and manager of his literary estate, Martha White, has compiled the best and funniest of his essays, poems, letters, and sketches, depicting over a dozen of White's various canine companions. Featured here are favorite essays such as "Two Letters, Both Open," where White takes on the Internal Revenue Service, and also "Bedfellows," with its "fraudulent reports" from White's ignoble old dachshund, Fred. The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library is pleased to welcome Martha as she speaks at the January Literary Luncheon beginning at 11:45 a.m. at the Boothbay Harbor Town Hall. The Boneheads

Their music has been described as "rootsy, folk, rock, blues, country and Cajun and All-American and danceable." For more than 20 years The Boneheads have been playing their brand of music to audiences throughout Maine and the northeast, as well as throughout the country. They have shared the stage and toured with the likes of Roseanne Cash, The Band, Bo Didley and The Subdudes, and are often compared to Van Morrison, Little Feat, NRBQ, The Band and their touring partners The Subdudes. Midcoast Model Festival
March 22-23, 2014, Owls Head Transportation Museum
Modelers from throughout Maine and beyond display a mix of both kit models as well as hand-made creations. Featuring everything from antique model steam engines, to cars, planes and trains. All sizes accommodated. Indoor and outdoor airplane and car model demonstrations. "Make-and-take" family activities and more.
