Visitor E-news November 2013
Greetings,

Thanksgiving and the holiday season are just around the corner, and the Boothbay Harbor Region has a lot of upcoming opportunities for people to get in the holiday spirit!

One of the much-anticipated events of the year is the Early Bird Sale, which takes place this year on Saturday, November 23rd. Many of the merchants in our region will be offering some great bargains to those who shop early. Shoppers who show up in their pajamas will often get extra discounts! Be sure to cheer on your favorite team in the ever-popular bed races which are a hilarious highlight to this day of shopping.

The young and young at heart always look forward to the arrival of Santa Claus, who makes a grand entrance by boat during the Harbor Lights Festival, which comes to town on Saturday, December 7th. This fun family festival features the spectacular Festival of Trees, lap time with Santa, caroling, a lighted boat parade, craft show, horse and wagon rides, and so much more. Be sure to bring the family for this festive kick-off to the holidays.

Throughout November and December, there are lots of other events going on, including steam train rides on the North Pole Express, the Great Gingerbread Spectacular, art and craft shows, and more.

We hope that you will consider a visit in the next couple of months to share in the festive holiday spirit of the Boothbay Harbor Region!

Warm wishes,

Catherine Wygant Fossett

The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library has settled in to its temporary location at the Meadow Mall while the library building on Oak Street is under renovations. The Library will continue to offer its services at the mall site, including children's story time, interlibrary loan service, deliveries to home bound patrons, and much more. Because of space limitations at the temporary site, the monthly Literary Luncheons will take place at the Boothbay Harbor town office meeting room.

The Boothbay Railway Village is celebrating November as National Model Railroad Month. The Museum's model railroad volunteers are busy mixing up plaster, roughing in wiring, and tinkering with tiny details on the Museum's outstanding HO scale model. This model has been under construction since the fall of 2006 and measures nearly 46 feet long by 20 feet wide. With more than 600 feet of track and nearly 100 turn outs this is a monumental task to build, especially when every detail matters. The model railroaders are always looking for new faces to join them for their Thursday work sessions. If you have a passion and experience with model railroads contact Ron Spinney at 633-3018 to sign up for the next work session. Those who would like to make contributions or donate gently used equipment can also contact Ron to arrange pick-up or drop-off.

The Boothbay Region Art Foundation is issuing a call out to all artists and creative people:  Creativity, generosity and a sense of community are key ingredients for the  Art In The Square Fundraiser/ Fine Art Exhibition and Sale. Now in it's third year, member artists and creative people from the entire community unite to create  an exhibition of 12 x 12" paintings and even some 3-D artistic creations on canvas. These compositions encourage the artists to think outside the box and to develop an artistic work within the box- the one square foot canvas. Expect bold designs, soft landscapes, portraits, still lifes, collages...realistic, whimsical and the very unique. Oil, watercolor , acrylic, fabric, monoprints- the works encompass a wide range of exploration and media. It is quite beautiful and inspiring. This event also enriches our artistic community by encouraging and mentoring young artists through the Art Scholarship Fund as well as furthering art education for the community . We at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation (1 Townsend Avenue) are anticipating another wonderful ART IN THE SQUARE. The community is invited to view the show on weekends beginning November 29 and  also to gather at the Reception on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 4-6 pm. Call us at (207) 633-2703 to find out more."Art in the Square" Opens Friday November 29.
