Visitor E-news October 2013,  Volume 1
 Greetings,

The Boothbay Harbor Region has been experiencing some exceptional fall weather the past few days. The nights are cool and the days are sunny and warm with just a hint of autumn crispness in the air. The leaves are starting to turn and pumpkins and mums are popping up in seasonal displays throughout the region.

There are lots of ways to celebrate fall in the Boothbay Harbor Region. Over Columbus Day Weekend, there will be the 46th Annual Fall Foliage Festival at the Boothbay Railway Village. On that same weekend, you can visit Damariscotta and Pumpkinfest where a number of creative local artists have turned giant pumpkins into works of art.

Are you looking to see some of our gorgeous fall foliage during your visit? Click here to see the "official" State of Maine foliage map which will tell you where the leaves are at peak color and where they are still changing. It should be able to help you plan your visit to take advantage of peak foliage season.

Even though the seasons are changing, there are still a lot of fun things to see and do in this region. Fall is a great time to visit; we hope to see you!

Warm wishes,

Catherine Wygant Fossett

Executive Director

The Boothbay Region Art Foundation is issuing a call out to all artists and creative people:  Creativity, generosity and a sense of community are key ingredients for the  Art In The Square Fundraiser/ Fine Art Exhibition and Sale. Now in it's third year, member artists and creative people from the entire community unite to create  an exhibition of 12 x 12" paintings and even some 3-D artistic creations on canvas. These compositions encourage the artists to think outside the box and to develop an artistic work within the box- the one square foot canvas. Expect bold designs, soft landscapes, portraits, still lifes, collages...realistic, whimsical and the very unique. Oil, watercolor , acrylic, fabric, monoprints- the works encompass a wide range of exploration and media. It is quite beautiful and inspiring. This event also enriches our artistic community by encouraging and mentoring young artists through the Art Scholarship Fund as well as furthering art education for the community . We at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation (1 Townsend Avenue) are anticipating another wonderful ART IN THE SQUARE. The community is invited to view the show on weekends beginning November 29 and  also to gather at the Reception on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 4-6 pm. Call us at (207) 633-2703 to find out more."Art in the Square" Opens Friday November 29.

Getting Away Together

GAT logo

Bring the Boothbay Region to Light!

Join the "Lady in the Red Cloak" for the Haunted History Tour of Boothbay Harbor on Monday, October 14th at 7:00pm for a 90 minute lantern lit walking tour.  Participants will be taken through back streets to hear tales of local hauntings and the history behind them. Buildings that once seemed ordinary will take on eerie new dimensions as "The Lady in the Red Cloak" relives their history and that of the ghostly entities that are said to still reside there. Tours are $12 for adults and $7 for children. Call the Lady in the Red Cloak to reserve your spot: (207) 380-3806. Proceeds from these tours will go to benefit the "Getting Away Together:  Starring the Boothbay Region" which hopes to "bring to life" a travel documentary series that has offered to produce a 30-minute segment featuring the Boothbay region. It will air globally on PBS member stations for several years and the film crew is here this weekend!

A monumental effort led by Audrey Miller of Cottage Connection has rallied locally to bring the Pineridge Productions show that airs on PBS and its affiliate stations to the region.  "The sand in the hour glass is running out on getting this project completed this year.   In just under two months, almost 100 businesses and over 250 people raised the nearly $55,000 for our region's portion to promote this show.  They have come on good faith but we still need $14,000 to fully fund our share of the production cost by October 15th," she stated.

"Having an Emmy award winning producer come here to film a travel documentary of the Boothbay region to be shown on PBS channels across the country and internationally is huge and would be a big boost to the local economy", stated Miller.  Park City, Utah, which was the focus of an earlier segment of the series, reportedly experienced a 10 percent boost to its economy after the show aired.

Make your own history today!  Sign up for the tour and /or make a donation to the effort at  www.gettingawayboothbay.org and help bring the Boothbay region to light on air!  And don't miss the fun video that kicked off this amazing effort to bring Getting Away Together to Boothbay!

September-October, 2013, Gold/Smith Gallery, 41 Commercial Street, Boothbay Harbor

Vander divides his time between Maine and Tuscany and his paintings make liberal reference to that fact. The public is invited to come and share the fun of this wonderfully diverse exhibit. Gold/Smith Gallery is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays noon to 5 p.m. For more information the gallery can be reached at (207) 633-6252

Singer-songwriter and Grammy-nominee Seth Glier knows the challenges of emerging into adulthood all too well. Over the course of just a few short years, Glier has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows as well as major folk festivals, all culminating in a nod from the Grammys. For years, singer-songwriter Antje Duvekot's songs have been critically praised for their hard-won wisdom, dark-eyed realism, and street-smart romanticism. On Friday, October 11, these two critically acclaimed musicians come to the stage at the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor. Tickets for the show are $15.

Paul Brady

Paul Brady, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is one of Ireland's most enduringly popular artists. His tours of the U.S. are infrequent and highly anticipated by his fans. On Thursday, October 24, Paul Brady comes to the historic Opera House in Boothbay Harbor. Born and raised in Strabane, Northern Ireland, on the border with the Irish Republic, he was into a wide variety of music from an early age. A fifties child, his first sounds the swing, jazz, show tunes of his parents generation. Then 50s rock 'n roll, 60s pop and Motown, blues, R n B and country and western. Through all this ran the potent flavor of Irish traditional music and song. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the show.
