Don't Miss Salt Bay Chamberfest This Summer! Now in its 19th year, the Festival's 2013 theme is "Music of the People." Artistic Director and founder Wilhelmina Smith writes: "Pulsing drums of Native Americans, ancient calls of Scandinavian shepherds, peasant songs from the fields of Hungary, progressive rap and jazz music of our time . . .Composers like Bartok, Stravinsky, Schubert and Dvorak were moved to write music inspired by the rhythms and songs they heard in the world around them. We will explore this rich variety of music alongside the original jazz, folk and popular music of its inspiration. Our musicians represent the very finest classical solo artists to the leading performers of jazz, rap, folk and native drumming." Talk with Maine Painter William Irvine Thursday, August 15, 2013, 4:00-5:30 p.m., Gleason Fine Art gallery 31 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor A Scotsman by birth, William Irvine spent his childhood in the southwest coastal village of Troon. Moving to the Blue Hill peninsula of Maine in 1967, Irvine has remained stateside ever since, except for frequent trips to the other side of the Atlantic to favorite haunts such as Brittany, France, and the coasts of both Ireland and Scotland. Maine's rugged coast suits Irvine's sensibilities--sailboats, clouds, working boats, sailors, blue skies, tidy white houses peopled by figures in bright shirts-it is all material for Irvine's paintings. Now in his 70s, Irvine still greets every day with the sense of wonder and adventure that has always driven him to paint. Please join us at the gallery on Thursday, August 15, 2013, from 4 to 5:30, to listen to Bill Irvine and have a glass of wine. Kathy Mattea Friday, August 16, 2013, 8:00 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor Most artists take fewer and fewer risks as they get older, but Kathy Mattea is a striking exception. She didn't play it safe while she charted mainstream country hits-16 of them reaching the top ten-and she's not about to start now. Four years ago, Mattea, one of the most sure-footed country-pop song interpreters of her generation, caught everyone off guard with an album of old-timey Appalachian mining songs called Coal. She's delved even deeper into her Appalachian heritage with Calling Me Home, co-produced with modern acoustic mastermind Gary Paczosa and featuring liner notes from bestselling author, and Kentucky-born kindred spirit, Barbara Kingsolver. This is Mattea's only Maine appearance this summer. Advance purchase tickets are $35, tickets purchased on the day of the concert, if available, are $40. Betty McCarthy Ends "Summer of Sogetsu" at the Gardens
Saturday, August 17, 2013, 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Floral arrangements in the Sogetsu Ikebana style are exuberant, dramatic, and creative. Betty McCarthy will present a demonstration in the morning and a hands-on workshop in the afternoon. Novice and experienced flower arrangers alike are welcome to participate in this day of color and creativity in the Bosarge Family Education Center and may sign up for either program or both. In her "Moving from Traditional to Modern" demo, from 9:30-11:30 a.m., McCarthy will use fresh, as well as dried and unconventional, materials to create arrangements using the basic Sogetsu Ikebana styles: Moribana designs in low containers and tall Nagiere designs in high containers. Fees are $35 for members and $42 for nonmembers. Then, in the workshop from 1-4 p.m., McCarthy will lead the class in designing an unusual table arrangement using fruits, vegetables and flowers. After watching her create examples, participants will choose from a wide variety of materials with which to fashion their own design, using one of the baskets provided or a favorite low-sided basket they bring from home. Each class member should bring clippers (preferably not pruning shears). Fees, which include all materials, are $80 for members and $95 for nonmembers.
Registration is required for these events; call 207-633-4333, ext. 101, or visit www.mainegardens.org. The Gardens is off Barters Island Road in Boothbay.
