Visitor E-news August 2013,  Volume 1
 Greetings,

It is hard to believe that it is August already! Back-to-school ads are all over the TV and radio, but there is still plenty of time to plan your summer get-away to the Boothbay Harbor Region.

When people think of the Boothbay Harbor Region, they often think of lobster and boat trips, but this peninsula is home to a number of artists and artisans who find inspiration in the landscape and seasons of Maine. While you are here, take in a summer musical at the local theater or attend an old-fashioned dinner theater for a meal and a show. A local historic performance hall offers a wide variety of entertainment, from Grammy Award-winning artists to local talent, from magicians to comedians and everything in between. Or, take in a movie at the local theater that plays movies all year round. Many of the local restaurants offer live entertainment throughout the summer in addition to some incredible food. Free concerts can be enjoyed on the library lawn and Boothbay Common throughout the summer as well, weather permitting.

Several local studios and galleries participate in a First Friday Art Walk that showcases a variety of media in a several charming locations. There are any number of craft shows throughout the season highlighting the wares of local crafters and those "from away." Many talented artisans have their wares for sale in some of the downtown shops.

Boothbay Harbor was included as one of America's Top Twelve Small-Town ArtPlaces, a new annual ArtPlace initiative recognizing smaller communities in the country where the arts are central to creating the kinds of places where people want to live, work, and visit. The other Small-Town Art Places for 2013 include Eureka Springs AR, Crested Butte CO, Ketchum ID, Vineyard Haven MA, Lanesboro MN, Highlands NC, Taos NM, Marfa TX, Stowe VT, Eastsound WA and Saratoga WY. Click here to learn more.

There are many reasons why a visit to the Boothbay Harbor Region should be on your summer to-do list, but whatever your reason, we look forward to welcoming you!

Warm wishes,

Don't Miss Salt Bay Chamberfest This Summer!

Now in its 19th year, the Festival's 2013 theme is "Music of the People."  Artistic Director and founder Wilhelmina Smith writes: "Pulsing drums of Native Americans, ancient calls of Scandinavian shepherds, peasant songs from the fields of Hungary, progressive rap and jazz music of our time . . .Composers like Bartok, Stravinsky, Schubert and Dvorak were moved to write music inspired by the rhythms and songs they heard in the world around them.   We will explore this rich variety of music alongside the original jazz, folk and popular music of its inspiration. Our musicians represent the very finest classical solo artists to the leading performers of jazz, rap, folk and native drumming."

Talk with Maine Painter William Irvine

Thursday, August 15, 2013, 4:00-5:30 p.m., Gleason Fine Art gallery 31 Townsend Avenue,

Boothbay Harbor

A Scotsman by birth, William Irvine spent his childhood in the southwest coastal village of Troon. Moving to the Blue Hill peninsula of Maine in 1967, Irvine has remained stateside ever since, except for frequent trips to the other side of the Atlantic to favorite haunts such as Brittany, France, and the coasts of both Ireland and Scotland. Maine's rugged coast suits Irvine's sensibilities--sailboats, clouds, working boats, sailors, blue skies, tidy white houses peopled by figures in bright shirts-it is all material for Irvine's paintings. Now in his 70s, Irvine still greets every day with the sense of wonder and adventure that has always driven him to paint.  Please join us at the gallery on Thursday, August 15, 2013, from 4 to 5:30, to listen to Bill Irvine and have a glass of wine. For more information, call the gallery at 207-633-6849, email us at info@gleasonfineart.com

Tickets for Ed Gerhard's performance are $18 in advance and $22 on the day of the performance.

Kathy Mattea

Friday, August 16, 2013, 8:00 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

Most artists take fewer and fewer risks as they get older, but Kathy Mattea is a striking exception. She didn't play it safe while she charted mainstream country hits-16 of them reaching the top ten-and she's not about to start now. Four years ago, Mattea, one of the most sure-footed country-pop song interpreters of her generation, caught everyone off guard with an album of old-timey Appalachian mining songs called Coal. She's delved even deeper into her Appalachian heritage with Calling Me Home, co-produced with modern acoustic mastermind Gary Paczosa and featuring liner notes from bestselling author, and Kentucky-born kindred spirit, Barbara Kingsolver.  This is Mattea's only Maine appearance this summer. Advance purchase tickets are $35, tickets purchased on the day of the concert, if available, are $40.

Livingston Taylor

Saturday, August 17, 2013, 8:00 p.m., The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, Livingston is the fourth child in a very musical family that includes Alex, James, Kate and Hugh. Livingston recorded his first record at 18 and has continued to create well-crafted, introspective and original songs that have earned him listeners worldwide. Taylor makes an annual pilgrimage to the Opera House stage and returns this summer in response to audience requests. Tickets are $22 in advance and $27 on the day of the show.
