Plan a Summer Getaway to the Boothbay Harbor Region

Visitor E-news July 2013, Volume 2
|
|
Greetings,
Summer in Maine is always a memorable time: stunning sunsets, cool ocean breezes, fresh and decadent seafood, and the stunning beauty of the Maine coast are all great reasons to visit the Boothbay Harbor Region. Rachel Tibbetts, who has been our Visitor Relations Coordinator for the past several years and our official canine greeter, Bella, are leaving the Chamber to start a new adventure. We are sad to see Rachel and Bella leave, but are excited to welcome Rimar Reed on board as our new Visitor Relations Coordinator. If you are in the area, we would love to have you stop by and say hello to Rimar! Downeast Magazine is trying to find out what Maine's prettiest drive is. We are a bit partial to the scenic vistas found at Ocean Point and along our peninsula, but if you want to cast your vote, you can click here and tell Downeast what you think. This summer has seen some hot and muggy weather, which is a perfect excuse to find your sea legs and get out on the water. There are lots of tours and excursions to experience, including scenic and nature cruises, dinner cruises, music cruises, and more. Hop the boat to Monhegan Island and explore that rugged and beautiful island. Climb aboard an historic windjammer and experience sailing from a bygone era. Be a lobsterman for a day and learn what it takes to catch and keep a Maine lobster. Let a local sport fisherman aid you in your pursuit of mackerel, striped bass, bluefish, shark, or tuna. Or, if paddling is more your speed, rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board to explore the harbor and coastline. No matter what kind of a vessel you decide to go out on, we hope that you will take some time to explore the coastline by boat, and we wish you fair winds and following seas!
Warm wishes,
Catherine Wygant Fossett
Executive Director

The Botany of Beer
Thursday, July 25, 2013, 5:00-8:00 p.m. , Kitchen Garden Cafe
Great beers are the stuff of which legends are made, and an essential factor in creating beers that stand apart from the crowd is the plants used in brewing them. Plant scientist Tim Boland and Scott Arboretum educator Julie Jenney will discuss the many fascinating facets of one of the world's oldest prepared beverages - from the controversy over beer styles to the rise of craft beers and ancient brews. They'll introduce the botanical components of beer - plants from the grass family such as wheat and barley - but also the fruits, spices, and, of course, hops, that go into the mix. They'll explore unique characteristics of different beers and suggest the best foods and glassware to pair with various brews. Tastings of several craft beers will help participants discover for themselves the differences among beers and what factors might influence the taste, color, and other features of each selection. Sandwiches and snacks are included in the admission fee of $60 for members and $72 for nonmembers.
