                                                                                     May/June 6 2013

Dear Valued Members,

The last time I wrote, we were just kicking off Fisherman's Festival and the spring. Now we're jumping ahead to June and that means summer and Windjammer Days!

This Executive report will be my "May" issue. I apologize that time slipped by but we've been very busy and have lots of great things to report. So you'll get two in June and then we'll be back on track.

Our Annual Awards Dinner was May 22nd and by all accounts was a great event selling out with over 145 members! Thanks to our presenting sponsor Fisherman's Wharf Inn a proud member of the Lafayette Group for an amazing night! We had a "special appearance" by Senator Angus King (click here to see the video - please note it will take a few minutes to load the video) and our new member Kerem Durdag, CEO of Biovation, gave us an inspirational speech. We honored our nominees and winners for awards which I have detailed later in this report. Thanks to our sponsors and everyone for supporting such a fun event!

We have a staff transition in the works too. Rachel, our Visitor Relations Coordinator, has decided that she wants to start a new chapter in her life and will be taking courses in the fall for a Medical Coding Specialist. She will work with us as we transition her position. Click here for a job description and please feel free to send any candidates my way. We appreciate all Rachel's efforts over the past four years and look forward to welcoming someone new to our team.

Speaking of which, our new intern, Evan Stevens has started and we're off to a great season. The map is here, the Downtown Information Center is open and we're open 7 days a week. Our next Business After Hours is Wednesday, August 28th at The Bank of Maine and Windjammers is June 25-26 with kick-off events on Sunday, June 23rd. We will be airing a 5-part educational series on BRCTV Channel 7 to talk about our 51st Annual Windjammer Days Festival that starts today.

Enjoy the sun!

Best always,

Catherine Wygant Fossett

Heliotropic Technologies

The Boothbay Harbor region has the chance to become Maine's greenest community, and one of the most environmentally-friendly areas in the country. Many local businesses have already changed out their lighting from incandescent lamps to LEDs saving 80% of the associated lighting costs at little or no cost due to the Boothbay Region non-Transmission Alternative incentives available. Heliotropic Technologies, a local energy engineering services and solar system supplier, operating from the region since 1980, has been contracted by the Efficiency Maine Trust to assist implementing their demand reduction efforts, and also has a PUC-approved contract to provide special solar electric system incentives to the region's electric ratepayers.

In fact the chamber would like to say a big thank you to Ian Burnes from Efficiency Maine and Michael Mayhew from Heliotropic as we saved over 82% from changing the existing lighting over to LEDs, estimated to be a savings of 2,481 kWh/yr. (At $0.14/kWh = $347/year savings. Click here to learn more!

The Harbor Theatre

Congratulations to Jason Sheckley who fortunately for the Harbor Theatre in Boothbay Harbor was able to raise $49,700 in donations in seven months to purchase a new digital projector and has gone digital! Help promote your business - it's a tax-deductible expense and includes FREE movie passes & Theatre membership and helps the Theatre stay open year-round. Office of Tourism announces change in Maine's official fulfillment piece

For many years, the Office of Tourism has used Maine Invites You, which is produced by the Maine Tourism Association (MTA), as our official fulfillment piece. MTA did not bid on the most recent RFP to produce a 2014 travel planner for the Office of Tourism.

MTA will continue to produce Maine Invites You and will be in the market selling advertising for the publication. However, the Office of Tourism will not be using or distributing Maine Invites You in 2014. We are exploring current trends and best practices related to printed vacation planning tools and will create a new piece accordingly. We have decided that the 2014 Maine Office of Tourism fulfillment piece will not include advertising. We want a strong, proven product before offering the industry any advertising opportunities. Please contact Carolann Ouellette with questions or comments.carolann.ouellette@maine.gov  The chamber will be looking at our options and how this will affect our coop advertising. Stay tuned...
