Visitor E-news May 2013
 Greetings,

Memorial Day has come and gone, and it is that time of year when people in the Boothbay Harbor Region start looking forward to summer. Most of the shops, restaurants, inns, hotels, and B&B's are open for the season, with more scheduled to open their doors in the next couple of weeks.

Our 2013 Downtown and Region Maps have arrived from the printers. In a similar format to last year's maps, the design has been tweaked a bit to help visitors find the shops, restaurants, activities, and lodging establishments that they are looking for.

We are still getting feedback about the Fisherman's Festival, which happened in April, including an article that was written by a guest of the Welch House Inn. The article, written for Art Times Journal, can be seen online here.

We are gearing up for our 51st Annual Windjammer Days festival, which will be upon us in less than a month. This year, we are looking forward to welcoming 11 majestic windjammers in to our harbor. The Pirates of the Dark Rose will be back with activities for young and old. The Second Annual Artists Alley will feature the work of many local artists in an outdoor market setting in The By-Way. There will be parades and fireworks, entertainment, a craft show, historic talks, and so much more. For up-to-the-minute updates, be sure to like our Windjammer Days Facebook page . For a complete schedule of events, be sure to visit our website and mark your calendars - June 25th and 26th are days not to be missed in Boothbay Harbor!

We hope that your summer plans will include a visit to our coastal peninsula.

Warm wishes,

Catherine Wygant Fossett

The Boothbay Region Community Band

has been bringing music to the peninsula since 1991. The band can be seen performing at the Memorial Day parades of the region, as well as both days of the Windjammer Festival in late June. The group boasts a varied personnel, ranging in ages from 13-???! Come see how much fun it is when a bunch of busy people take time out to make time for music. All musicians, of any ability, are welcome. We would love to help you dust off that instrument you haven't played since middle school.

The Boothbay Railway Village is open for the season. The Village will be open from 9:30AM-5:00PM weekends only starting May 28 until June 17 when the museum commences daily operation.

The Boothbay Railway Village was able to purchase a three plus acre plot of land directly across from its location on Route 27, Boothbay thanks to an exceptional gift from local philanthropist Paul G. Coulombe,. This gift assures the future growth of the museum with respect to overflow event parking and more. For instance the hosting of a Day Out With Thomas in August generates the need for parking cars for the over 1,000 daily visitors.

allen david Gallery will start its sixth year in a new location, at 11 Granary Way in Boothbay Harbor.

 Unique Experiences
Stories from our Members and Visitors

Martin from  Georgia writes:

I made my first trip to Maine in about 1980 and I knew immediately that I would return many times in the future. Yes, it was love at first sight. In 2000, shortly after I retired, we planned a private cruise (I owned a very small interest in a boat that was docked in Newport) of the Maine coast. We booked stops at Bar Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Cape Elizabeth, Castine, N. E. Harbor, Ogunquit, Rockland, S. W. Harbor, etc.

Some of our criteria for the most desirable Maine vacation spots were:

1) Rocky and beautiful coastline

2) If must not be too crowded or too busy

3) Good restaurants

4) Rentals, food, etc. must be reasonably priced

5) Location

After weighing all these factors, Boothbay Harbor was the strong consensus choice of my wife and myself. I believe we have made 8 trips to Boothbay Harbor since 2000. I hope we can make many more!

Share your Unforgettable Experience with us! We want you to share your story and become a Boothbay Harbor Regional Ambassador.

  • Why did you pick Boothbay Harbor Region for your vacation? Or, if you've never been here before, what makes you want to come and visit?
  • If you have been here before, what draws you back each season to visit?
  • During your visit was there an unforgettable stay, meal, activity or retail experience that you would like to share with us?

We also hope you will give us the opportunity to share your Unforgettable Experience in our next e-news that will go out to over 4,000 readers. We want to share our members' stories with our visitors and our visitors' stories with our members!  Send your stories and pictures to Brooke Hubner at

"A Life In Art" show by Artist Helen St. Claire
May 16-June 19, 2013, Gleason Fine Art
Educated at prestigious Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, St. Clair spent the 1970s and early 1980s in Albany, New York. In the mid-1980s, with children grown and husband Jerry retired, the St. Clairs decided the time was right to find the place by the sea that they had always wanted. In Boothbay Harbor, they found the perfect house--an antique cape on its own point of land with a stunning view of the harbor and islands. In her studio overlooking the harbor, St. Clair blossomed as an artist, moving with equal skill between figural studies, landscapes, and evocative still lifes. Gleason Fine Art is honored to have represented Helen St. Clair for nearly two decades.

June 3-7, 2013, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

This program is ideal for all levels of expertise: beginners, more experienced artists, and professional wishing to review technique. Flowers are so much the focus of many botanical artists that the leaves tend to be somewhat ignored, but during Lee's workshop at the Gardens there will be no flowers in the room! Instead, she will present techniques for drawing well-observed and accurately rendered leaves. Lunch from the Kitchen Garden Café every day of the five-day workshop is included in the tuition fee of $495 for members and $550 for nonmembers.

Registration is required for these events; call 207-633-4333, ext. 101, or visit www.mainegardens.org. The Gardens is off Barters Island Road in Boothbay.

Literary Luncheon Extra with Author Jack Perkins

Friday, June 14, 2013 at 11:45 a.m.Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library

For twenty-five years, millions of Americans watched Jack Perkins on NBC News as a correspondent, commentator, and anchorman. People were familiar with his face, his bearing, and his rich, reassuring bass. Yet at the age of fifty-two and at the height of his career, Jack Perkins disappeared from the public eye and moved with his wife, Mary Jo, to a bare-necessities cabin on an uninhabited island off the coast of Maine. This isolated home they came to call Moosewood was the setting for Jack and Mary Jo's spiritual awakening. Jack Perkins is on a book tour through the Northeast and is planning to speak at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library's EXTRA Literary Luncheon at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, June 14. Cost of the lunch is $10 and is catered by Red Cup. Please sign up early at the library as space is limited. For more information, call the library at 633-3112 or email Barb at barbh@bmpl.lib.me.us
