Visitor E-news March 2013
 Greetings,
It is officially spring! After a long and snowy winter, everyone is looking forward to warmer weather and gearing up to welcome first-time guests and returning visitors to our corner of Maine.

There are some great events lined up for the upcoming months. The Fisherman's Festival will be on April 26-28th. This festival celebrates the importance of the working waterfront to our community and includes the blessing of the fleet, an old-fashioned fish fry, and contests and fun for all ages.

The planning for Windjammer Days is in full swing. We have reached out to captains from ports near and far, encouraging them to bring their magnificent vessels to our harbor. There will be many favorite festival activities planned for this year, including the antique boat parade, street parade, parade of sail, and fireworks. There will also be some new surprises in store, so be sure to save the dates of June 25-26th and join us for the 51st Annual Windjammer Days.

We would like to congratulate local photographer Steve Demeranville from East Boothbay for taking third place in the Yankee Magazine 2013 - My Hometown Photo Contest. Click here to see Steve's award winning photo.

Downeast Magazine wants to know what your Top Maine Summer Destination is. We might be a little biased, but we think it is definitely Boothbay Harbor Region! Tell Downeast what you think by emailing editorial@downeast.com or by clicking here. The winning destination will be featured in the May issue of Downeast Magazine - help us spread the word that our region is the place to visit this summer!

With warmer weather just around the corner, we hope your plans for the upcoming months will include a visit to the Boothbay Harbor Region. Whether you come for a day or a week or a month, we look forward to welcoming you!

Warm wishes,

The LifeFlight Foundation

LifeFlight's vision for Maine is a place in which every person, in every community, has access to critical care and medical transport when they need it. We do this by working with our EMS partners to transform the critical care transport medicine system into an integrated, high quality, patient-centered system worthy of the public's trust. LifeFlight's two helicopters, based in Bangor at Eastern Maine Medical Center and Lewiston at Central Maine Medical Center, cover the entire state of Maine and offshore islands. In inclement weather our crews can still bring their expertise and advanced medical equipment directly to the patient via ground ambulance.

The LifeFlight Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that provides fundraising and public relations support to LifeFlight of Maine. Supported by the generosity of the many friends of LifeFlight, the Foundation raises funds for aircraft, hospital helipads, statewide aviation improvements and the many training outreach programs offered by LifeFlight staff, including trauma and critical care, brain injury, ground safety, cardiac care and injury prevention programs at elementary schools.

 Unique Experiences
Stories from our Members and Visitors

Paul from Connecticut writes:

We have been twice-a-year visitors to the harbor for over 30 years. I've also been a Register subscriber for all those years. I brag to my friends that you have the greatest weekly newspaper anywhere, and I share my copies with many. We've made some great friends of quite a few local harbor residents while there.

During our visit last October, we visited the shipyard parking lot to observe the work being done on The Bounty. We were fortunate to meet up with one of the very friendly crew members, who filled us in on lots of great facts concerning the ship. We spent over half an hour listening to him talk about the Bounty. We were dismayed, to say the least, to learn of the loss of the ship at sea. Attached herewith are several photos I took while we were there. I even ventured down the "forbidden" stairway to obtain some shots of the figurehead. Hope you'll enjoy these.

We look forward to the next visit in July to our favorite destination.

Peppino D'Agostino

Peppino D'Agostino doesn't just play the guitar. He composes, arranges, collaborates, improvises and has even been known to sing a song here and there in both English and Italian. But what he does create on the guitar makes the difference between simply playing and truly making music apparent in the most wonderful ways. D'Agostino has been hailed as "a guitarist's guitarist" by Acoustic Guitar magazine as well as "a giant of the acoustic guitar" (San Diego Reader), and holds many top guitar awards, but the San Francisco Chronicle encapsulated the essential difference that distinguishes D'Agostino's music when it dubbed him "a poet." A beautiful night of music in Boothbay Harbor's historic Opera House. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 they day of the show.

In 2010 she was named one of "5 Under 35" fiction writers by the National Book Foundation, and she received a 2007 Rona Jaffe Writer's Award.  Cost of the lunch, provided by Red Cup, is $10.  Please go to the library anytime during their business hours to register.  Sign up early as space is limited.  For more information, call the library at 633-3112.
