                                                                                     February 15, 2013

Dear Valued Members,

The kick off to the summer season is here with the arrival of our new region guide!  Once again we are one of the first in the state to print our guide and we've already sent out close to 300 to visitors who are looking forward to coming to our region.  Nearly 700 have looked at it online since we published it last week!  Thank you to everyone who advertised and helped us create this guide.  Click here to learn more!

A great way to market the region and combine our resources is through co-op marketing opportunities.  Please see the "Marketing Opportunities" section below that outlines your options and pricing.  We are on deadline today for many of these items so please send in your forms and capture the savings!

We are happy to announce several confirmed Business After Hours to kick off the season.  Click here to learn more about how you can become a host.   Please note we are scheduling them every two weeks throughout the year instead of every week in season.

Thank you to all of you who sent in your survey on the Annual Awards Party.  Based on your feedback we are planning this for mid-May so stay tuned for more news on this fun event.

The staff and many members attended the Governor's Conference on Tourism and they did a great recap of what the Maine Department of Tourism (MDOT) has done for the state.  This inspired us to do a quick "Did you know" fact sheet for all our members and prospects highlighting what we do for our members.

If you are looking for staff for the season, please remember that you can post job postings / opportunities on our website. If you'd like help with this, please contact Brooke@boothbayharbor.com.

We look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events!

Best wishes,

Governor's Conference on Tourism

The staff attended the Governor's Conference on Tourism on January 31, 2013 in Rockport along with several of our members.   MDOT did a great presentation on what the state is doing for tourism; we attended workshops and had an opportunity to network with others in the industry and our own members.   Click here to download the 2013 Marketing Plan Highlights and workshop presentations.

Gov Conf on Tourism

Pictured from left to right:  Brooke Hubner, Nancy Bosio-Picket (Flagship Inn & Suites), Rachel Tibbetts, Catherine Fossett and Cherie Scott.

I asked each of our staff to give me a takeaway from what they learned and share it with you.

Catherine - it was great to see that the mix of advertising that the state is doing based on sound research mirrors what we are doing locally.  It includes a mix of online, magazines, newspapers, radio and transit trains.  I'm happy to announce that I met with Amtrak Downeaster at the conference and they have now joined the Chamber and will be working with us for the season.

Cherie - A couple of months ago Catherine, our fearless leader, presented Brooke, Rachel and myself with the fantastic opportunity to join her in attending the Governor's Conference on Tourism. I can say with certainty, that we all left that conference with a twinkle in our eye and a march in our hearts (Grand State of Maine...proudly we sing..) Our ride back home seemed so short as we shared our experiences. When Catherine asked each of us to share what we learned from the conference and how it would relate to our positions here at the Chamber, I couldn't type fast enough. It was the seminar on Engineering Experiences that presented me with an idea to launch a new social and e-media campaign for "What Makes the Boothbay Harbor Region Unique?" We hope you will join us in this collaborative effort and become a part of our campaign.  Click here for more information on how you can share Your Signature Story.

Brooke - The keynote speaker at the Governor's Conference on Tourism was both entertaining and inspiring. One thing that he mentioned was the importance of being the best you can be and how that applies to things like events and festivals. He said that when putting on a festival, you shouldn't strive to have the seventeenth best festival; you strive to have the best. This has inspired me to do what I can to make our Windjammer Days festival and Claw Down bigger and better!

Rachel - I attended the "Engineering Experiences" seminar and it was the one I learned the most from. The speaker went into detail about engaging and immersing the tourists that come to enjoy our beautiful area.  Here are some examples:

1.       Uniqueness of our Region - We have bragging rights to so many different and unique activities that other mid-coast areas do not have. Let's highlight them! In our lobby we have lots of information, stop in and see what we have to offer!

2.       Bragging Rights - Let's send them home with great stories. We receive so many phone calls that start off with, my friends just returned from a vacation in Boothbay and they had such an awesome time, could you please send me information, I am really looking forward to visiting your area. That emotional connection is what we need.

3.       We need to create the Connection / Nurture the Narrative / Find the Feelings so they want to return year after year!

I would recommend our local business attending next year!

Windjammer Days - June 25-26, 2013 Windjammer Days

Last year we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Windjammer Days and we estimate over 350,000 attendees have been part of the Windjammer Days Festival over the course of the festival's history.  We know people are watching it online as 37% of visitors to our website in the month of June are for Windjammer Days with one million plus page views a year for our website www.boothbayharbor.com.  We estimate over 100,000 volunteer hours for the 50th festival alone and the business impact is huge!

Year-after-year retailers, restaurants, and lodging establishments' remark upon the influx and spikes in their revenue for the duration of the festival and how it is so important to kick off the summer season.

Based on estimates from the US Bureau of Tourism that overnight visitors generate $381 of spending and day visitors $47 per day the festival generates an economic contribution to the region of over $529,678 in revenue for area businesses based on a Maine Department of Transportation study that tracked an additional 3,286 vehicles on Route 27/96 during the festival time frame last year.
